Characters: John, Dean, Sam (Gen)
Summary: 3x100 connected “Depression” drabbles for supernatural100.
This doesn’t happen to people—there are laws of gravity, or maybe he’s gone insane.
But John saw her there, up on the ceiling. So haunted and helpless, the flames all around her… he knows what he saw, though it doesn’t make sense.
He’s got no explanations for what happened, but it wouldn’t help, wouldn’t change it.
It’s just him and the boys and no mother, no Mary. No gentleness, no sunlight-- they lost it all when Mary died.
Every morning when he remembers, the pain comes crashing down.
Then he wishes that whatever it was had taken him instead.
Two more days in the hospital, after. For observation. Machines and doctors monitor Dean’s body, but only Sam looks out for his heart.
If I’d said yes sooner haunts him over and over, those times when there are any thoughts at all. Mostly it’s a haze of Dean and Sir and vitals checks where his Dad doesn’t come and doesn’t come...
Sam’s idea, burning the body. And it’s right, but it was too big for Dean to decide.
Flames light the sky while they wait, but this isn’t happening.
Dad can’t be dead, Dean swears. This isn’t happening at all.
How Sam wanted it to be was this: the two of them sitting on a porch swapping stories and remembering when they were kids. Dean might have a limp—nothing worse—and Sam would kid him about being that gray-haired guy who listens to music so loud that kids are scared.
Instead, Sam sits in this rent-by-week motel. He can’t make himself get out of bed, can’t forget the way Dean’s eyes went from black to green to gone.
He has no brother—only an amulet.
So how’s he going to make it through a future that’s already too long?
