Comes Calling
In the basement of the hospital, John confronts his choice. Realization comes too late.

The Colt for Dean, John’s vengeance discarded. The risk was always there in “maybe,” but now it’s fated unless he bargains it away.

It’s a deal with a devil, a chance he’ll lose both what he has and what he wants.

But it’s the only choice he can make, even when it becomes himself.

This boxed-in drama marks his downfall, leaving hopeless behind for gone.

But his end was at the beginning. He chose the road that led them here— chose to fight instead of forget.

Thank you, Anakin.

The most interesting thing about this use of the prompt as "Downfall" is that it immediately led to John, and from there to the fact that his first choice was the beginning of the end-- and not all the more obvious things that came afterward.

Oh, me too. How can it be over so quickly? So quietly?

His choice was perfect, but in the execution... too unsung.

Um, darlin'? I speak ill of my own father. Death doesn't make a saint.

*rubs forehead* And I'm a tad bitchy, I'm sorry.

John very much did seem to come through for Dean in the end; accepting the "no sir, not above everything".
In the end, he finally made the right choice. If he'd made it years ago (the family of "now" over the family of "was"), their lives would have been so very, very different. And for the boys at least, so much happier.

But then, we'd be out one heck of a fascinating show. ;) Can't complain too much. :)

Ooo, what is the realization that comes too late? Only answer if the spirit moves you--I'll be a long time digesting this one. Yum!

:D Should I tell you now? Or do you want to ponder further? ;)

You seem to think I can get it so I'll let it stew. ;)

Thank you so much. John's later life was a tragedy from the moment Mary died, really. :(

Sorry for the late reply-- I don't think I'm getting all my comments in email right now. :0
