Supernatural Gen Fanfiction: Happy Whatever. Maybe
Title: Happy Whatever. Maybe.
Author: HalfshellVenus
Disclaimer: Not mine, not ever.
Pairing: Sam and Dean (Gen)
Rating PG
Summary: Dean’s birthday is coming, and that’s a challenge beyond witches or warlocks.
Author’s Notes: Originally written for 60_minute_fics (“Birthday” prompt). This updated version has Dean’s birthday moved to the month canon tells us it's probably in (thanks to silvarafire/delfeather for that info). Though he still seems like a Leo to me...

I loved this when you first posted it, and I love it now. Revisiting it after we've watched our boys endure this year makes it even more poignant, imo.
Thanks,
DC

Oh, your point is well-taken. When I first wrote this, I had no idea of the arc of estrangement they'd be going through, and how rocky things would get between them. :(

Here's hoping that they work back through to closeness and ease once again.

Thanks for commenting again, DC-- that was very sweet of you. Cheers!

Boo on the flat tire. But this little ficlet was so sweet!

...getting ahold of extra money and then secretly shopping for a present becomes a stealth operation worthy of the C.I.A.
Lol, this line made me chuckle.

Boo on the flat tire.
:D Bigger boo on the new pump, which didn't want to work for awhile (wouldn't lock down on the valve stem), and the tubes always have crappy valve-work so I'm afraid of breaking the stem and sealing my fate. :0

Kept me from writing a NEW story, but this one was for Dean's birthday from the get-go, and it's a good day to trot it out. :D

Lol, this line made me chuckle.
Hee! That situation makes my stealthSanta stuff at Christmas look like a piece of cake! At least the kids eventually leave the house, and we don't share all the same stuff. In fact, we have closets that can be used. Sam is not so lucky. ;)

oh. this makes my heart hurt. :D in a good way!

:D In a good way is always perfect. :)

Can you honestly imagine living with someone like this, and trying to make them happy while they put obstacle after obstacle in your path? But if you know it's because they don't feel worthy... then you still have to try.

Thank goodness Sam can decode the mystery of Dean most of the time. :)

This was so very beautiful and so much in character as you always manage to do!
I really like how thoughtful and how affectionate Sam is. It´s great that you ended it here, because it leaves the reader with the sweet knowledge of how much Dean will enjoy this gift.

Thank you so much, Victoria! :)

That does seem to me to be something that it is better to imagine than to describe, and Sam's thoughts on the what and whys of that gift are really the important part.

Choosing the gift was by far the hardest part of this story! Dean is hard to shop for. ;)

Oh, GORGEOUS sweetie!! And lookit!! It's in MY city!!

*Squeals with joy!!*

An awesome fic, and one worthy of Sam and Dean - I just hope Dean got a chance to fly that plane!

*HUGS*

:D It ended in a homey place, didn't it? Moodwise and in terms of locale.

I would expect there was some seriously good goofing off with that plane. And doesn't everyone need some of that, but especially the boys? :D

Sometimes its the things we can't say that make our actions scream.

There is a delicateness that wraps its self around this story. Sam's hesitancy and indecisiveness are part of that delicateness. They show themselves as just other ways in which Sam cares about Dean.

You can really sense how careful he's being, can't you? Not just about revealing the surprise too early, but also about navigating around the minefield that Dean can sometimes be.

And just as you said, the fact that he tries so hard is one of the deepest signs of love. A lesser person would have given up a long time back. :)

Awww... this line killed me "This airplane is the childhood Dean never got to finish." Loved this piece and thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for reading!

The gift was the hardest thing to figure out in writing this story, because it would be so laden with meaning somehow-- I struggled with it the same way poor Sam would have.

Dean would never have made that easy for him-- he doesn't make it easy for anyone to love him-- but I think the choice in the end said all the right things in what it was. It's the only kind of message that Dean can stand to hear.

For a while I thought that Sam would get Dean something goofy. The red airplane is just adorable. Though Dean might not fly it around (at least not while Sam is there to witness it), the whole gesture is saturated with meaning.

That's it exactly-- even if Dean might feel dumb enjoying it in front of Sam (recent episodes of the show indicate maybe not-- Dean's getting dorkier)-- Dean will absolutely know what Sam meant with that gift. Even if he could never put it into words himself, he'll know in his heart which is the only listening that really matters.

Thanks for the lovely comment-- took me awhile to find it in my mailbox, so I'm pretty late in replying.

I'm just now finding your fic - it's helping me get through a deadly boring afternoon without falling asleep! And what a nice treat it is to have stumbled across such enjoyable fic.

This one is gorgeous - such heart from Sam, trying to find something his brother will accept, and coming across just the right thing. I *can* imagine them testing the plane alongside some long stretch of lonely road, with laughter and smiles.

Thanks for sharing this! Now, off to read some more...

Gosh, I'm so sorry I missed this comment back when you posted it! *cringes*

This story stays close to me, because it describes both the impossible dance between the brothers of when to show affection or to celebrate (at any given moment, you never know which way the reaction's going to go), and yet how wonderful it all can be when it DOES finally go right. As badly as they need that love and connection-- Dean especially-- they sure make it hard for themselves to ever become secure in it.

It both frustrates and fascinates me. ;)

I'm glad you followed the link! After writing this one, ages ago, the idea of ever touching this concept again frightened me. How could it ever get more Winchester than this? :0
I do not think it means what you think it means.tcs1121 on July 4th, 2009 12:01 pm (UTC)
So glad you linked this to your recent story. So much said in so few words. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks so much for coming over to check it out, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Oh for those earlier days of childhood, when things between the brothers were a little simpler even if nothing else was. By the time they've grown up, there's NOTHING that's easy anymore.
