Supernatural Gen Fanfiction: Happy Whatever. Maybe
Title: Happy Whatever. Maybe.
Author: HalfshellVenus
Disclaimer: Not mine, not ever.
Pairing: Sam and Dean (Gen)
Rating PG
Summary: Dean’s birthday is coming, and that’s a challenge beyond witches or warlocks.
Author’s Notes: Originally written for 60_minute_fics (“Birthday” prompt). This updated version has Dean’s birthday moved to the month canon tells us it's probably in (thanks to silvarafire/delfeather for that info). Though he still seems like a Leo to me...

I love the sneaky ways Sam has of picking up income
:D I figured it was time Sam had his own areas of competence that Dean doesn't necessarily know about. And this really seemed to fit Sam-- especially because no part of it is remotely underhanded or illegal. And Sam would actually care about that. ;)

Glad you liked the story! Thank you. :)

Oh Thank God! A birthday story where Sam isn't an ass and forgets Dean's birthday! Not just that, actually does something really preciously cute and meaningful and the kind of thing you know Dean'll appreciate even as he fights not to get all chocked up. Thank you.
And I like that you added the bit about how Sam earns extra money. In my little "if I was a Winchester" fantasies I always saw myself as getting money editing and teaching online (which I do anyway) since I have no desire to do credit card fraud and my pool game leaves a little something to be desired. I could actually see them doing that as they got older but still hunted. Sam a professor at an online university. Dean under a pseudonym writing articles for classic auto and music magazines. And of course Dean could always do porn, at least in my fantasies. ;>

Oh BOYS. Sweet and perfect. I love Sam's earnestness in this. He wants to get it right so badly.

He does tend to be that way too, doesn't he?

And here, it's also getting it right in a way that Dean will understand (almost by flying in below Dean's auto-reject radar). No small feat! Dean, Dean. Try not to be so much work, huh?

Thanks for your commments. :)

Oh, I know what you mean-- sometimes heartwarming and heartbreaking just go together entirely. :)

So glad you liked it! Thank you. :D

Oh, what a spot on perfect present (if painful) for Dean! Well played!

Love how this fic illustrates how Sam appreciates his brother and watches his moods and acknowledges that Dean has had to give things up too, for the life he and they are leading. Love how Sam wants Dean to know that sam "gets it".

Well played, indeed.

We always hope Sam knows that, and I'd like to think that, in his better moments, he does.

Love how Sam wants Dean to know that sam "gets it".
This is the hardest part of all. We see Sam trying sometimes, in the show, but when he tries to say it, Dean just aborts right out of the conversation before Sam can finish.

This time Sam will finally sneak his message past Dean to the point where Dean will have to see it, and finally understand what it means.

So glad you liked it! And your thoughtful comments were a pleasure to read. :)

Andn don't you just know this is how it was?

"Happy Birthday" one year, and "We've got places to be" another. And never knowing which it was going to be.

Thank you, Tabaqui! :D

This airplane is the childhood Dean never got to finish.

It’s a gift that tells everything Sam isn’t allowed to say.

Oh. Wow. That was so touching and beautiful and funny and just all-around AWESOME. You have a wonderful way with words. *is slightly jealous* Anyway, I loved it. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much! It's funny how a symbol can carry so much meaning-- especially when its meaning is indirect. For Dean, sometimes that's the only kind of message he's willing to hear: something shown, its meaning implied.

You have a wonderful way with words.
That is such a lovely thing to say. Thank you! And I'm very glad you enjoyed it. Nice to see so much response for a Gen story (I write both, but the Gens don't get noticed quite as much). :)

awwwww! I just love this, the idea of Sam springing a remote-control plane on Dean! And the image of them out in a park flying it and Dean dive-bombing Sam with it and. heee!

That is SUCH a great image, isn't it? I think they'd have a lot of fun torturing each other with it. :)

And you pushed me over to page 2 on comments-- on a Gen story, which hardly ever happens. Yay Ellyn! :)

:D Louisville IS your town, isn't it?

Well if you're going to have visitors, at least let them be purdy. And knock a few ghosts out of the rafters while they're at it.

Glad you liked it! Thank you. :D

Oh. I just...this is so heartbreaking. It's so utterly painful with this slight twinge of hope at the end. Your last two lines completely nailed the fic. They're beautiful and so raw and truthful. Wonderful, wonderful fic.

It's rather moody, isn't it? So much feeling of trying but just missing, and success seems so far away until the very end.

Your last two lines completely nailed the fic. They're beautiful and so raw and truthful.
Thank you. *happy sigh* Finally Sam has made his choice, and we know why he chose what he did. And there's this feeling that somehow, he chose correctly.

Much of this (other than a little smoothing and changing Dean's birthday from July to January) came right out in that 60-minute challenge period. But the actual gift... trying to figure out what on earth Sam should choose that would be truly perfect and complete this mood... that took the last twenty minutes, and I nearly didn't make it in time.

Given how hard it was for me to think of that gift, I somehow really feel for Sam.

Thank you for your wonderful, thoughtful comments. I've missed you during your RL settling in. :)

Thank you very much!

I can never get away from how much Dean needs John and Sam's love, and how very hard he makes it for them to reassure him of it.

Showing, indirectly, seems to be the message that Dean can stand to hear. And sometimes, Sam really gets that. :)
Ameliaamanofmydreams on December 12th, 2006 01:26 am (UTC)
awwww, that is all i ahve to say. Sammy can be soo good to dean when he wants to! Very cute!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on January 6th, 2007 10:03 am (UTC)
Sam has such a challenge, trying to be good to Dean in a way that Dean will accept. Many times he doesn't appreciate Dean the way he should, and others he clearly does and Dean just pushes it off (*kicks Dean for being a pill*).

But here, he hits that magic combination of implying (not saying) with his actions and not his words. That's the kind of thing that Dean can either tolerate, or will slip past his radar until it's too late and he has to actually hear it after all.

So glad you liked this-- thank you! :)
