Save me from...
Every now and then I think about phobias, and how OTHER people's phobias sometimes seem weird while your own, of course, are perfectly reasonable.

So, why not a poll? This is for actual phobias, not general fears or even severe dislikes. *drumrolllll*

What are your phobias?

Small or closed spaces
Wait, how are bugs and spiders honestly different when you're talking about phobias?
Moths/butterflies, because these are basically bugs (have you seen their legs?)
Snakes, but not other reptiles
Snakes are cool, but lizards and stuff are gross
ALL reptiles. Why are you even trying to separate them?
Hey, what about amphibians? I mean, technically not reptiles, but ewwwww.
Birds of prey and scavenger birds
Most birds are creepy, especially the big ones
Rodents, except for the cute ones
WTF? All rodents are disgusting!
Slugs and/or snails
Are you kidding me? Snails? What, you can't run away?

OMG, I can't believe you left out:

I suffer from severe cleithrophobia. It makes some things difficult. I can't ride elevators or in the back seat of a car.

I'll bet The Viking would tick off "Flying," since we've seen how long your road trips get. :O

My whole bug/spider phobia is a lot better than it used to be. I can kill them if need be, instead of freezing in horror or running away or wanting to scream. If a spider gets on me, though, forget it. I'm going to yell. Our daughter, by contrast, did not realize I'd ever been phobic, so definitely progress!

Heights, especially because I have vertigo, which makes heights dangerous. I get that sort of "screaming" feeling down the backs of my legs like you do in dreams where you're falling. Ugh.

And needles in veins. Not needles (so, not shots), but blood draws and IVs? I have to work myself up to going through with them. Might be less self-reinforcing if it didn't always hurt. :O

Putting my face in the water is another one. Probably better now, but the first time I went snorkeling I panicked because there wasn't enough air in the mask. Had to wait until I stopped hyperventilating. Ouch. /o\

This. Except I can't deal with hypodermics either. Any needle going into any part of the body triggers my "NOPE" response. I cannot cannot cannot look at it. I can't even look at an IV bag or tubes without getting squicked out.

I should have put that one on there for ME, and I forgot it.

Most people have the full-on needle-phobia, so I don't know why mine is more restrictive. My husband has it too, and -- get this-- my dad had it. And he was a doctor!

Meanwhile, our daughter donates blood. That would be pure horror for me-- being trapped with a needle in a vein, waiting for the vein to collapse or something (which has happened). I almost went down during a multi-tube blood draw, but that was 30 years ago. \o?

I was going to put avocados because my dislike for them is so strong it borders on obsessive :D

Hahaha! But would you flee in terror if you saw one?

I personally dislike avocados, but I love guacamole. It's all about the lemon, garlic, and salt that makes it the avocados taste like something besides just "flat."

Needles for me too o.O
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 22nd, 2018 04:54 pm (UTC)
I wonder if people would be so phobic about them if they didn't hurt so much?

Well, that and... they go into you to take out blood (for the doctor), so what's to stop ALL the blood from getting out? Or something? I kind of wonder if that underlying horror isn't part of it?

It's my phobia too, AND my Dad's (which I didn't find out until he was in his 80s). And the face in water thing? That's why he so rarely went swimming. He never mentioned it to me, but somehow it came down the RNA too. :0

Oh, I have a phobie of illness, too, TBH. Blood, injury, trauma, not scary, but don't puke in front of me—I'll run away.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 25th, 2018 04:59 pm (UTC)
So it's not the horror factor of the blood, but kind of a germ phobia? As in, that illness is coming for you next?

Boy, I think of all those times in grade school up through high school where I could NOT watch the health movies that involved opening people up. I still hate it (Hi, "House, M.D."! Thanks for making me look away from the TV so often), but it's not as bad as it once was. It was kind of a "breaching the skin" phobia. As in, the things inside the body needed to stay in there. If you opened the skin, they might get out. Compound fractures were as bad as operations.

I'd completely forgotten about that phobia!

How are you these day? :)
Killakillabeez on June 26th, 2018 12:23 am (UTC)
I'm actually so phobic I don't want to talk about it! :D But yeah, it's funny that I am pretty A-OK with blood, surgery, etc. Brains are weird.

According to this list, I’m pretty fearless except for fire and dying. I fear driving sometimes but not routine stuff like in my city. It’s driving on interstates where I don’t know my way and with big trucks. Cute snakey.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 25th, 2018 05:21 pm (UTC)
I wish I hadn't forgotten fire and dying. Those are pretty common!

I don't have a phobia about fire or dying, but I do fear them. Mostly, I fear people I love dying. I'm less worried about me. Not that I'm reckless or anything, but still.

I hate driving places I don't know, both freeways (big trucks are such a menace) and city streets where I'm looking and driving at the same time, and in danger of getting into an accident. :(

I just chose spiders, although some of the other options are kind of unpleasant for me and I might avoid them. Also the type or size of spider seems to make a difference. Basically the more sinister it looks, the less likely I am to capture it in a glass and carry it to freedom.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on July 6th, 2018 06:27 am (UTC)
You're kinder than I am!

I'm always afraid they'll escape the glass and get on me or something. Plus, after all that, the glass has cooties... :O
