This Burden
It was bad enough when he thought they were only nightmares. The things he sees—all so dangerous and disturbing, so horrifying and hopeless—these should not be part of anyone’s actual world.

Except that they’re too much like what he already knows, like that secret evil that drives his family into pursuit.

Reality is slower, cleaner. Less jumbled in action and sequence. But even so, that doesn’t mean it’s always easier to control.

So many things destined, possible, and past all converge in his head. So where is the part where he finally gets to have the upper hand?

Crossing Over
There is no peace when the dead return again. Their presence breaks a pact with the living world.

They haunt. They consume. Some seek to destroy. To become.

They rarely go unnoticed. They make bones tingle, and can freeze a heart— a thought—without the slightest little touch.

Dean sees them. And John can smell them or hear them in a blue-moon while.

But for Sam, it can be all of that or something even more.

Every so often, it’s more than simply seeing. At the worst times, the evil falls into a place Sam’s been carrying in his head.

Oh, Sam. *hugs Sam close*

This whole prompt was all about Sam for me. About being plagued/haunted by things he doesn't want and then feels responsible for, about never being free of this knowledge again.

What they do is hard enough. But having it broadcast/forecast to you over and over again-- sometimes later recognizing it when you find it-- would just be overwhelming. Ouch.

Oh yes, and possibly here you have captured what may be the focus for Sam this season. So much guilt/responsibility to bear. a struggle for control. You've given me chills.

So much guilt/responsibility to bear.
I don't know if Sam gets that yet, and I really don't think Dean does.

But that 'gift' is one that Sam would probably like to give back. After trying to hard to escape that lifestyle for good, it's going to come to him through visions no matter what he does. All he can do is try, ache, and regret. :(

You've given me chills. Yay! I so rarely get that effect with my writing. The spooky side of the show (much as I love it) tends to elude me in writing. :D

Oh poor Sam. Poor Sam.
I just don't see how that's going to get better for him. He can't turn it off, and there's no part of it he really wants.

He'll be haunted by what he sees... and MORE haunted if he doesn't try to do anything about what's in those visions. *Sigh*

For a really bleak take on this, try olivia_notebook's New World Coming (mild slash). It is so barren and broken, told in short, spare, heartbreaking language. It's gorgeous.

Oooh. These made me shivery :)

I particularly liked those two lines.

Whee! That's the mood I don't usually manage to get!

I particularly liked those two lines.
Thank you, Dot. Those ones are so atmospheric-- they show something so dangerous you can feel it without seeing it. Brrrr. I can't imagine seeking out that threat day after day the way the Winchesters do (and by doing, raise their profile among the Underworld as well).

I hope the show doesn't lose its creepy side in S2. That's one of the reasons I like it so much, even though I'm not a horror-movie kind of person (but very much a Buffy/Angel person).

I've wondered about that a lot. Just how aware are the sentient evil things of Winchesters, and how much do they have a mad-on for them? It's something to play with in fic maybe, but I'm curious if the show will go there.

I've always enjoyed the less gorey horror movies (mostly the stuff from the 80's and classics like The Exorcist or Rosemary's Baby). I like the horror on SPN better than Buffy because it is actually scarier, I like the look of it on SPN (I loved Buffy too, though, but for different reasons :)

Thank you, Debbie. :)

What a curse he's had set upon his shoulders. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. :(

He sure needs it, doesn't he? Dean, are you paying attention?

Thank you! These both lean more toward spookiness, which isn't something that comes to me very often.

But they seemed such a perfect approach for "Sight"-- all of it the _wrong_ kind, the kind Sam would rather not have.
