Chasing Contentment

The only picture in Dean’s wallet is worn at the edges, from being taken out and touched too many times.

In it, Sam is unaware, his face pensive as he studies the sky.

Sam spent his childhood longing for the home he never had, chasing a dream more elusive than the demons his father hunted.

Dean was different, always content so long as Sam was with him. Everything was always fine... until one day it wasn’t.

Dean understands Sam’s brooding now, for it is inside him now that Sam is gone. This picture holds the happiness Dean lost.

Oh, awesome! It's like a snapshot of a moment when he's looking at a picture. This is a great glimpse into Dean's psyche.

On a concrit note, I found the last sentence a little hard to understand. Once I reread it, I got it. And I may just be a dummy. :)

Anyhow, I really loved it. It's amazing what can be said with so little! :)

I modified it slightly after your review, but I don't know if it's easier now.

I'd need a new reader to verify that!

Thanks for the comments.

I think I finally get it now.

Sam has always held Dean's dreams and when he went away he took them with him.

Dean no longer bothers to dream because his dreams for a time were miles away on a college campus.

Whats the sense of dreaming when they can be ripped away so brutally. Even when it was done unintentionally with the innocence and blindness of an angry child.

Sam holds Dean's hopes and happiness, the better part of their childhood after their mother was lost. His leaving takes the joy and sunlight out of Dean's life.

Exactly. Even if that isn't what Sam meant to do, and who he meant to hurt, it cost Dean the most. There is killing and protecting and saving left in Dean's life now, and the knowledge that they are fighting the Good Fight. But there is no joy.

Randomly, I think you might have missed the newest drabble series because I didn't have it hooked into my homepage as you were going through (and I've never been so happy to have everything so organized as today! Go you!).

It's the Gen Drabbles series for "Holidays," which is here.

Caught the "Brokeback To The Future" clip yet? It should be on your recent f-list from me. *Cough* Bad funny wrongness :)
