108o today and humid, and tomorrow is likely to be 111o. I suspect I will be biking in the garage again tomorrow. Today is a rest day, and I'd hoped to hit the pavement tomorrow. That dream may already be dead. :(

Monday, I went shopping with our daughter (IN the heat) to look for some work blouses for her internship in DC. I did not realize were were looking for a unicorn, for crying out loud. I thought she was struggling because she was being too picky. Her hatred of both buttons and adornment is really limiting, and while I understand the second one, I keep thinking she'll get over the first. Regardless, we were looking for simple short-sleeved blouses in rayon or polyester—like the kind I used to wear to work in my radio days. I have five of them right now that are exactly what she's looking for, except that they're too big. Basically, like this, except without the pockets. And yet, no one wants to sell those anymore! Not online, not even at places like Macy's, unless you want to pay about $60 for the single example of that style Macy's has. It's all t-shirt material, trampy cuts, split-shoulder stuff (why is that fashion so widespread?), other variants on really unsuitable clothing for professional women, and some really highly fitted button-down tops that might actually work except... buttons. We found three sleeveless tops that were acceptable (after giving up on short-sleeved ones!), and my online search was fruitless (that sample blouse above is for retailers to order, not individual customers). I think she's going to be mostly wearing dresses this summer, even though skirt/blouse separates are much more practical. Ten or more years ago... \o?

Okay, end of rant. How about a meme, a little stale around the edges but good for some croutons?

Give me a fandom and I'll tell you:

The character I least understand
Interactions I enjoyed the most
The character who scares me the most
The character who is most like me
The character with the hottest looks
One thing I dislike about my favorite character
One thing I like about my most hated character
A quote or scene that haunts me
A death that left me indifferent
A character I wish had died but didn't
My ship that never sailed

My fandoms include anything I've written or talked about, which are also in my profile interests. Fair warning that I've abandoned a few of them, so there might be a "cut-off date" for the content of my answers.

Hit me!

How have things been with you? :D

I sympathise with your shopping plight. It's really difficult to find affordable, good quality work clothes that don't make you look like you're trying to attract a man instead of you know.. actually working? *rolls eyes*
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 21st, 2017 10:33 pm (UTC)
I didn't realize it had gotten so bad that ALL you could buy-- even at stores that traditionally used to sell business clothes-- was "fashionable" stuff.

Which of course I do not buy, because it often looks ridiculous and the whole point of it is to have to get rid of it in 1-2 years because it's too dated.

I tell my daughter that this is why I include places like Goodwill and other thrift stores in my shopping. Things that are out of fashion or out of season (like, swimsuits in August!) might just turn up there. :)
Direst Ryl: The Morriganryl on June 21st, 2017 11:47 pm (UTC)
I was going to say you might have more luck at Goodwill. I found five very nice blouses there when I was shopping last month.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 22nd, 2017 12:21 am (UTC)
Exactly! But she is dead set against it. Her snobbishness is outweighing her practical side there.

Goodwill was how I found her a swimsuit at the end of July when she was 1 or 2 and had outgrown the previous one. In our area, it's swimming pool weather at least until October. :O

I don't know what your daughter's proportions are like but have you tried the men's section? Don't be alarmed but with the new fashion for men like "Slim Fit" and "Straight Cut", I found a lot of t-shirts and long-sleeve shirts with buttons in the men's section that I can actually wear and I used to hate buttons just like her. LOL!

Online shopping is a good solution too, lots of affordable options online that aren't available in physical shops. I have a corporate job so looking formal and professional is a priority.

There were so few of us in the Prison Break fandom...and it's all but disappeared into the aether. Although folks still read my fics on A03.

So....Prison Break! :)

I still write the occasional story for PB, though it's pretty rare these days! I quit after S3, though. Nothing after that is canon to me. AND? The whole retcon on the boys' father is also not in my canon, because it was ridiculous. SO...

The character I least understand -- Probably Sara. The drug issues, being taken in so easily by Michael's manipulations. I liked her best in S2, when she was getting back on her feet again.
Interactions I enjoyed the most -- Michael and Lincoln, because I'm sappy, though Michael and Westmoreland were pretty high up there.
The character who scares me the most -- T-Bag, for obvious reasons.
The character who is most like me -- Argh. Probably Michael, apart from his obsessiveness and insane decision-making.
The character with the hottest looks -- I could only ever see Lincoln as his John Doe kind of self, so he was hot to me even when he was bald. Because I'm nuts.
One thing I dislike about my favorite character -- Lincoln's inability to have pulled it together pre-series and not keep slipping into the path that led to prison.
One thing I like about my most hated character -- I had to think for a bit to find someone I hated, which I guess is Gretchen. She was a take-charge kind of gal, and a rare henchwoman. :)
A quote or scene that haunts me -- Westmoreland staying while everyone else gets away. :( :(
A death that left me indifferent -- Maytag?
A character I wish had died but didn't -- Agent Kim. Because Kim. Though I love that actor on Grimm...
My ship that never sailed -- Lincoln/Michael, of course, which was never GOING to sail in canon.

It hit 102 here today. I tweaked something in my hip so no running for a me, and with this heat I'm actually okay with that. Ugh.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 22nd, 2017 12:40 am (UTC)
It's really hard to run in the heat, so it's nice to have permission to skip it for a bit. I hope the hip is better soon, and the heat has died off!

You know her size, hit up consignment, goodwill, salvation army etc, alone, and buy what shes after. Then wrap them in an envelope with gibberish on it, pretend you got them from some store online.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 22nd, 2017 06:36 am (UTC)
Hahaha! I like this idea, and I have been tempted. Because how can she know, right? I wasn't that snobbish at her age, but then again, my parents grew up in the Depression, so I have a different perspective.

My Mom is especially all about finding things at Goodwill/St. Vincent's that are no longer made or sold. She has bought a couple of 6-across G.E. waffle irons there, after the one she got for her wedding finally died. After 50 years of use. She's found at least one just like it that still had a little life left in it. ;)

The button thing... I thought that was just temporary weirdness when she started hating buttons in Kindergarten, but she'll be 20 this year!
jya_bd_cp_ttgbjya_bd_cp_ttgb on June 22nd, 2017 11:31 am (UTC)
Doesnt like looking at them, or doesnt like using them? Cause nobody said you had to. Just buy a little big, slip the shirts on and off like a nobutton deal.

Maybe in her previous life, buttons caused her death? Bit one off a beaus shirt and choked? Slipped on one, took a header down the stairs? Just teasing;>
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 22nd, 2017 08:38 pm (UTC)
She started off hating how buttons feel: "They press against me when I'm at my desk!" I told her that most people pull their shirt or dress slightly up or down, so that the button isn't trapped between their skin and a surface.

You would think that would have worked!

But soon, she started hating how they looked as well, and has never gotten beyond that. Seriously, I used to sometimes cute up her clothes a little with special buttons when she was little, so that was a surprise.

We used to joke that if she was bad, we'd send her to work in a button factory. Because apparently, that would have been just awful. \o?
swirlsofblueswirlsofblue on June 22nd, 2017 04:21 pm (UTC)
*Hugs* I feel you. It's so hot here too. Not as hot of course, it was around 34 (I don't know what the conversation is) but our buildings are built to keep in the heat because it's usually cold, so it's still pretty bad.

I could rant forever on the designs for work-wear for women. So much of the time it favours look over functionality, and why can't we just have pockets. Hope she manages to find something to her liking.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on June 22nd, 2017 08:43 pm (UTC)
34 degrees Celsius is about 93-degrees Fahrenheit, which is scorching in the UK. And miserable no matter where you are. Yikes. :(

I often avoid pockets on shirts, because I'm chesty, but slim pockets that don't bulge or ruin the line of skirts, pants, and dresses? Yes please!

I would also love a return to shirt and blouses that are not see-through. In this climate, you want single-layer clothing for more than half of the year. Putting camisoles under things is an invitation to sweat. :(

Ugh.... summer. :(

I'll ask about Supernatural (even though I've not been in it for a while myself)
