Supernatural Gen Drabble: The Open Road
Title: The Open Road
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam and Dean (Gen)
Rating: PG
Summary: For kronette, who wanted Dean happy for a change. Also for supernatural100's challenge #34, “Joy.”

x-x-x-x-x

Shapeshifter slime last week and burnt bacon this morning-- Dean was tired of his lousy luck already.

He grumbled, squinted his eyes... and was done. Dean was no complainer.

Crossing from Arizona to California, something inside him changed. “Ventura Highway” came on the radio and the sun appeared. Dean decided to drive up the coast instead.

Two hours later, he was there. Climbing up 101, watching the waves sparkle under the sun, he glided through a gorgeous day, his brother finally back beside him. And he realized that what with chasing monsters and evil… sometimes, he was just chasing this.

You must have captured it because this left me so happy for Dean. I'll have to make sure I end my reading here for the day. ;)

I hope it has the right feeling to it. I feel happy for (Gen) Dean, reading this-- and hoping that this is more than a moment but rather the direction his life is headed. :)

Thank you. :) Once, in awhile, poor Dean deserves a chance at happiness too-- especially given that his wants are so very simple.

sometimes, he was just chasing this. Ah, that's so beautiful. I really see that with Dean. It's all he wants, and it's enough for him.

It really is. And it's so tragic, really, that his wants are "simple," and yet ultimately may involve too much sacrifice on Sam's part (which Dean doesn't understand).

How much do I love that shapeshifter slime and burnt bacon are at the same level of annoying to Dean? So much!

Hah! I really think they are. Bothersome, but he'll blow them off just the same.

If only the rest of us were so nonchalant. ;)

I love the image and idea of this (Dean+highway=OTP *g*). And the last line was lovely. :)

:) Thank you, Dot! Dean does love his driving, and sometimes the setting for it would make it worth anyone's while. And then contentment, such a rare thing.

Glad you liked it. :)

I would think so too... He loves his life - and if they ever did catch the ultimate bad guy - Dean would still be out there - kicking ass for us with his anonymous heroism

I think so too. He's bought into what they do, and he has certainly seen what happens when they fail (the same as no-one even trying). I can't see him turning his back on that, knowing as he does. :)

a tank of gas, an open road, and sam. sounds like peace to me. :>

:) Does to me too. There isn't much that Dean wants more than that, not long term. :)

You know, not even happy Dean-- to me more content Dean, which is far, far better. (in my estimation) Happy is a flash; contentment settles in deep, lasts as long as that winding coastline drive into the horizon. =]

Lovely use of each and every 100 words. ♥

Oh, I agree-- "Happiness" is brief (even moreso for Dean). Contentment can be lasting, and here it is deeper than Dean had come to expect after Sam left. Hope the feeling comes through all the same. :)

Glad you enjoyed this one, Dru!

In the event I was at all unclear-- that feeling completely came through for me in this-- which is why I'd been so particular to mention my distinction on the terms! (hee)

So, yes. Total Dean Contentment, achieved. :)

Happy sigh!

Sorry- meant to write more, but I'm using a borrowed computer (I'm out of town for a SGA con).

Oh, definitely happy sigh. You captured what makes Dean content, happy, satisfied, whatever you want to call it, it's all he needs.

And if you feel the need to write the slash version of Dean happy, I certainly wouldn't object. *g*

Yay! It's all good when the drabble requester likes the result. :)

I was offline the whole vacation, and I couldn't remember whether you were Wincest-yay! or Wincest-nay! So I took the safe route, just to be sure. :)

And I'll see if anything comes up. I still have two slash drabbles left for anakin415 and acostilow that are languishing for lack of inspiration. :0

You're very welcome!

It seems that Dean's happiness is catching-- perhaps because it's so rare and we wish it could be different for him. :)

I love this Dean I wish I got to see more of him like this.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on August 28th, 2006 06:15 am (UTC)
Oh, me too. Part of it would be him having the confidence that Sam's not going to bolt out the door the first chance he gets. And Sam making sure that he can keep that kind of promise.

If I promise to faciliate the discussion, do you think they'd do it? ;)
tyrical: AP_aJolietyrical on August 29th, 2006 02:11 pm (UTC)
You'd have to be very persuasive because they are both stubborn, stubborn, men.
