Supernatural Gen Drabble: Uncertainties
Title: Uncertainties
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Mary (Gen)
Rating: PG
Summary: Belatedly written for the supernatural100 challenge #32 on “Firsts.”

She’d quit her job at the card shop two months ago, and the walls had been closing in ever since.

She readied the nursery, endured daily phone calls from her mother. Boy or girl, she wondered? Playful like her sister? Or serious and strong?

She busied herself with books and ideas—so many methods to raising children, and no two authors agreed! What if she was bad at being a mother? What then?

One morning a wave of pain hit her, growing hourly until her breath was gone.

“John,” she said, “it’s time.”

She left Fate to decide the rest.

Aw, she worked at a card shop. Why does that seem like the perfect job for her? I often see her portrayed as an English teacher, but I like her working at a card shop, helping people pick out cards for others.

There really needs to be more Mary-centric fics around here. I liked your addition to the small collection. :)

It's hard to get a strong feel for her, but card shop seemed to work for me. Lots of customers and interactions, a cheerful atmosphere. English teacher means older kids by default (teens-plus, usually), and I don't see that age group being her strong suit somehow. Little kids and adults moreso. NOT that we have any facts for her at all. ;)

I'm glad you liked this one-- I only have a few Mary and Jess pieces, because there's so little background for them (mainly glimpses of loss).
