And we're back...
We returned home today after visiting family in Oregon. A good trip, but always so tiring—it's eight hours of driving each way, in the best of weather, and tends to wipe us all out. I'm hoping to do more over the next few days than just put things away and clear up Xmas stuff. Probably a lot of garage biking, though—the weather is clear, but cold.

I started and finished reading The Painter by Peter Heller over the course of the trip. It was an interesting story, not as good as The Dog Stars but a little less irritating to read. At least there were quotation marks for dialogue in this one, although still not enough commas. I would also dearly love to cure the author of the tendency to. Break. Sentences in random places. For effect.

I'm also almost all the way through Master Of None, which has been surprisingly gripping. I started it yesterday morning! And I finished When It's A Jar before I left, which I enjoyed quite a bit—mostly for the weird touches. Killing a dragon with a breadknife! Goblin universe newspaper reporting!

On the way back down I-5, we stopped for gas in the town of Rogue River, which we have never done before. Please, let us remember for future reference that the Rogue River Chevron station has a store cat! It's a plump little black cat who sits in front of the gas station minimart, looking for random petting and treats. One of the employees says the cat has been there eight years now. Our son and I both had to stop to pet her, and thought about our own fat little black cat, waiting for us at home in the garage and wondering where all the warm laps had gone.

I hope you're all recovering from the holidays (the first one, at least), and not too snowed-in or otherwise weather-afflicted. :)

The roads were good-- we left and returned on the two clear days in a week's weather for the I-5 Siskiyou Summit. The best you can do is check the Yreka and Ashland forecasts, and Saturday and Tuesday were the only good days.

I was looking for a picture of the store cat online last night, and it didn't occur to me that WE could have taken one. Because I have a dumb-phone, my son's phone's batteries were out, and our daughter was all "meh" on the store cat concept. Boo.

That road trip helped with the reading, but my time at the gym helps too. There's usually at least 1 day a week on the elliptical trainer in the winter, and I use a stationary bike at my parents' house, so that is all reading time. :D
