Montag ist der Schlimmste Tag...
It's the last day of Idol voting, and I'm biting my nails. My entry could sure use more votes...

The weekend was rain and more rain (but already people are complaining that it isn't enough, and I'm sure East Coasters would like to smack us). I think we got at least 1/2 inch of rain or more during a 2-hour window yesterday afternoon. Fat, heavy downpour—it's the first time we've had such a wave of water on the route from the patio through the garage (don't ask) that it transported mud and tree-pods with it. I had to put on flip-flops to get to my bike shoes for biking in the garage—there were no dry spots between there and the back door! :O

I did no yardwork this weekend, except getting more tangerines off the tree during a brief dry spell. Most of the roses still aren't pruned, and the annual "false spring" has started up (I hope it isn't actually an early spring for real—that happens sometimes too). I'm hoping for at least one non-rainy day next weekend, because there is still a lot to do.

HalfshellHusband and I watched Die Hard 4 last night with our son, who of course loved all of the explosions and was not viewing it as the John/Matt slashfest I generally do. Geez, right from McClane's first appearance at Matt's door, he seems to be flirting! HSH asked about the actor playing the FBI director, because we definitely have seen him before. I couldn't remember, and was sure the guy was East Indian. Fail, fail, F.A.I.L.!! The actor is actually Maori, and he played the "No, I shun my destiny" Dad in Whale Rider. Such a good movie.

We also saw This Boy's Life the night before, which I rented partly for my daughter. She likes dramas, and this was from DiCaprio's early years when he was an outstanding child/teen actor. She refused to see it, but the rest of us watched it. I'd forgotten how good De Niro was in that movie too (wait, what am I saying?).

HalfshellHusband wants to see Midnight Running again now, one of De Niro's first comic roles. He remembered that Charles Grodin was an accountant in that movie (this relates to last week's Idol story, where I was researching accountant-movies). Then he mentioned Dave, with the accountant-friend who comes to the White House. "That's also Charles Grodin!" I said. Though that's never a bad thing...

Almost finished with Elmore Leonard's Pronto. I'm frustrated with what happened to one of the minor characters, whom I really liked, and sometimes Leonard's punctuation gets on my nerves. It's as if he went over the text with a weak vacuum cleaner and sucked up random commas. Whatever stayed behind got printed, but c'mon—well-known rules for clauses! Were commas an abomination to him, or what?

All right, back to work. Tell me of your weekend!

:D It's too late, I was already voted out.

German is one of my other languages (though I've forgotten most of it), so every once in awhile I like to delve into it. My husband studied it too, so we use it randomly in phrases that probably confuse the kids: "Time to put on some Kleider," or "I need to get a Haarschnitt today."

This is how couples and families devolve into having their own language independent from how the rest of the world talks. ;)

Aha, I see! :-) I think it's fun to throw in some words in a different language from time to time. And it could be educating for your kids! Even if they will probably never really need those German expressions in real life. :-D

Sorry that you were voted out! Moi needs to be schneller with the voting next time!
