The last time anyone saw Avery Lang was at midnight on March 11, at the top of the Belden Street bridge. He vanished in a single breath.

Everyone assumed he'd jumped, though his body was never found. He didn't seem the type, his friends said, but maybe we didn't know him as well as we thought. If I hadn't actually seen it happen, I wouldn't have believed it myself.

The first phone call came four months after that, in the middle of the night: "So, hey, John. I was thinking, maybe we should drive to Waterton on Saturday, see what's going on. We haven't been there in a long time."

"Avery?" I said "Where are you?"

There was no answer, only an earful of dial tone. In the morning, I wondered if I'd imagined the whole thing.

I related to this. I'm young, I don't remember ever not having a computer. I got internet when in the single digits, and a cell phone in my teens ... when I can't get instant information and communication like I'm used to I feel claustrophobic and edgy.

I guess that for whatever reason you feel "cut off," it's still discomforting. Really, the exact way you described it. You can't make it happen, you can only wait, and that _does_ make you feel edgy.

Alternate universes are cool. Sort of like bow-ties and fezzes. :)

:D This sounds like a Whovian reference, though I don't know how those play in. I'm envisioning Shriners now.

Blue police call boxes, though... they're definitely on my radar. You can buy a coffee mug version of them, even!

It is a Whovian reference. I sort of see the Dr. Who series as a brilliant alternate timeline for Earth, in and of itself.

I've seen coffee mug versions of the TARDIS (aka the blue police call boxes), as well as cookie canisters, throw blankets, etc.

Lots of fun things available over at ThinkGeek

What a creepy situation! I probably would not have taken it as well as this narrator seems to have.

Nice work!

Thank you! I think he's so driven by the pain of missing a friend that the creepiness doesn't occur to him. To an outsider, though? It's all there. :O

I kind of guessed Avery was going to be a visitor from an alternate universe (too much Fringe, probably), but this piece made me think of my friend who died earlier this year. I don't know why, exactly.

The other thing I wondered was what if the narrator was actually the one slipping in and out of universes, and Avery only existed in one of them.

Tsuki_no_bara above suggested that same possibility-- that John was the one passing in and out-- which hadn't even occurred to me, but I really like it!

I've seen all the Fringe, and now I'm itching to go back and rewatch it. The early Fringe setting is still my favorite, though I've liked the others too.

Oh, Walter. You'll always intrigue me. :)

Yeah, it's hard to know who is the real person moving between AUs here. My thought was that they both are. :)

Both! Wow-- another possibility I hadn't thought of, though I like it!

Ooh. Makes you think about memory and what matters while being creepy at the same time! Very enjoyable.

Thank you! I'm glad you caught both sides of that. :)

And maybe he'll be back. You never really know.

Exactly! Why not be optimistic, given how things have already gone?
