BBC Sherlock: "Gone Awry"
Title: Gone Awry
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: John/Mary, Sherlock (Gen)
Rating: PG
Summary (S3): This was not according to plan.
Author's notes: I can't believe I'm writing this fandom, but comment_fic got me again…

Devastation, yes, certainly—Sherlock expected that. He knew how cruel he'd been to poor John, but it couldn't be helped. Everything was just too cocked up for him to bring the public around via sheer reason. Moriarty had boxed him in far too well for that.

Admittedly, he had meant to make his way back to London much sooner. Those two years hadn't been easy on him either, but things had got out of hand. Enemies and foreign governments could never be relied upon not to bollocks up even the best of plans, and Sherlock could be a bit impulsive even on his own.

But this… This woman. This engagement. John was supposed to limp onward into a future where Sherlock would someday return, not recover so well from the tragedy of losing Sherlock that he wholly replaced him. Sherlock had done his best (unintentionally, of course) to thwart John's attempts at frivolous romances earlier, and really, he'd been so sure John wasn't up to a deeper relationship just yet, not after Afghanistan.

How could the man have gotten over the war, over Sherlock, and found himself a fiancée in just those two bloody years? It defied logic!

The worst of it was, Sherlock liked Mary. Well, as much as he liked anyone apart from John, but still—she was friendly enough and sharp, and not all intimidated by him (and God, was that ever rare).

She obviously loved John, all the imperfect edges of him, and Sherlock had never seen the man happier.

So where, in all of that dreadful, lovey-dovey coupledom, might there still be room for him?

This is delightful, thank you. :D

I'm particularly taken not only with Sherlock's puzzlement at how John could have moved on (all summed up in his feelings about the moustache *g*) but with Sherlock's actually liking Mary.

Again, thank you.

I have the feeling that Sherlock's vision of his reunion with John involved tears, perhaps an embrace (the kind Sherlock loathes from anyone other than John), and then picking up where things left off.

But anger? Getting punched? A fiancee?!? (and that mustache?) Outrageous!

The fact that Mary is terrific just makes it worse, for John/Sherlock fans as well as Sherlock himself. How can he help liking her, and then hating that he does?

I hope this was something along the lines of what you were looking for. Great prompt!

Poor Sherlock. And who would ever have thought that he'd actually like his love rival Mary?!! I wonder what would have happened if he had found his way back to London without the Afghanistan detour?!! That's likely another story. :)

Who'd have thought I'd be reading anything other than PB fanfic?!! I believe it's the way you tell them, so thank you! :)

Liking Mary must make it worse-- with anyone else John was interested in, Sherlock would try to insult her out the door (and succeed!), but with Mary, I think he'd feel guilty. He's trapped watching her make John happy and not being entirely able to resent her for it.

I'm glad you enjoyed this, and that it spoke to you!

Super-Squirrel is new to me. :D

It would be much easier for him if he didn't like her!! Poor fellow!

The Super-Squirrel is an old icon I've had for years - thought I'd trot the little chap out again. ;D

Beautifully done. I think Sherlock's not the only one wondering at the end.

I know I wonder about that-- part of me wants just John and Sherlock together forever (the movie universe as well), and yet... Mary is terrific and John deserves to be happy, and CAN be happy. Yet what will become of John and Sherlock's friendship? I feel for Sherlock, much as he took John's feelings for granted. He doesn't really understand interpersonal relations enough to fully see what he should have done instead, and why all of this happened.

Thanks so much for reading!

Great little story. Poor Sherlock, so innocent in some ways. Just expecting john to be thrilled to see him. Loved your insight into it.

I think Sherlock is well-versed in the abstractions of psychology, but as to the fact that individual people simply cannot be so easily summed up? Not always the case! So typical and so blind, really, to assume that John would only be overjoyed to see him, and that the rest would be forgotten in an instant. ;)

I love the realization that, not only does Sherlock like Mary but she respects him. I'm sure it's begrudging at first, but it's really there, and it would make this moment that much the harder.

Oh, yes-- as much as Sherlock disdains most people, Mary is completely genuine and self-assured. That is the one combination he has very little ammunition against. How can he not like her, and how can he deal with all that he must then let result?
