After the Nightvale recs and squee over podficcing at Wincon, I decided last night that I would make a serious attempt to get podfic on my iPod Nano.

No. So much No.

The iTunes and database we use are on my husband's computer, and I'll probably have to try over there instead. But the current iTunes I installed on my PC doesn't seem to have an interface for "Download. Now. Into my database, even, I don't care—just download it!" Nightvale wants to play on my actual computer, and things that I copy to the iPod as mp3s are then mysteriously unknown to the iPod afterward.

I don't think my unit is too old (it's one of the classic 8Gb Nanos, and I will part with it when it is dead). What am I missing? Or is it that the iTunes interface has moved beyond liking my moldy old hardware?

G.A.H.

Help?

When you plug your ipod in, does it show up in the iTunes interface?

If it does, it would appear on the left side, you'd click on it and it should give you the device information. From there, there is a podcast tab and you can select the podcasts you want to download.

I'll check this when I get home. I know it does on my husband's computer, but I don't think I saw anything last night.

Thanks!

You may also need to reboot the nano (hold down the center button and the top of the clickwheel until you see the apple logo).

I really hate iTunes, so I use an alternative (free) program called CopyTrans Manager that works pretty well? I'm not sure if that's what you're having the problem with.

At worst, I can try getting my husband to add them to iTunes. It's fully installed and in use on his PC (it's how we download our playlists). But it's a mere skeleton of a crappy promise on mine. No actual features, but plenty of offers to enable new apps to do more annoying things.

I hate Apple. Hate it.

So with you on the Apple hate. But they do music like no one else, so I wind up stuck with them for some things.

:/

If it helps, all the episodes are up on YouTube.

It's more the getting to them as podfic (so I could listen in my car, for instance) rather than the captive PC-audience method. ;)
