Feels like beyond Friday, like I've dragged halfway into next week...
Today is the last day of voting for the current round of Idol, and any and all votes are appreciated. My pieces are here and here (two this week). The poll numbers on the first one are really making me nervous. :(

So, last day of training, but my brain was fried back on Wednesday. It's been a long week with very little sleep, though the class equipment is behaving better. Just a few more hours... I've been trying to catch up with my f-list today over lunch (now), and periodically checking the hourly weather forecast all day in some sort of stubborn denial mode. Still on target for 100o at 5pm, which means I cannot bike today. But surely, if I keep refreshing the web page, that will change. Right? :O

Did I mention that my daughter got us hooked on the BBC Sherlock Holmes series? We're 1 1/2 episodes in, but really liking it so far. I don't find Benedict at all attractive (apart from That Voice), but he's really well suited to the role. And even my daughter thinks Martin Freeman is adorable (and he does look like a Hobbit, somehow). We're watching Doc Martin with our son (who finds Bert as hilarious as I do), and Sherlock with our daughter. Meanwhile, the stuff on the DVR is piling up... though HalfshellHusband and I finished S1 of Homeland, which was quite a ride. Plus, Mandy Patinkin has once again won me over. Apart from Criminal Minds, where he irritated me, I have some kind of ungodly weakness for that man's soulfulness.

So, weekend. No camping. Probably packing for vacation, though. What about you?

I'm waiting for the phone to ring. They said they would call about whether I get the job on Friday or Monday. By Monday evening.

I hope somehow you can bike soon :)

I'm still hoping for you! This has been on my mind since I saw the post about Wednesday's interview. :)

Hahaha... welcome to the club, my dear Mme Venus, because Mr Cumberbatch left a big impression on me too - together with Mr Freeman, of course.
*nods**nods*

The BBC's 'Sherlock' is a brilliant TV show and got me hooked up from the premiere eppy on...
*little squeees*

Good luck to all your plans, my friend; have a good weekend and I'm wishing you 'n' your family a joyful vacation.

The role of Sherlock is a difficult one, in that the writing surround it needs to be entertaining enough that Sherlock himself is not entirely insufferable. I love the movies with Robert Downey Jr. (and Jude Law is just a wonderful Watson). There's a lot of humor in the story to counteract the fact that a lot of the time, you just want to smack Sherlock for being such a jerk. ;)

I'd only caught part of a Sherlock show from another room a year or two ago, where the modern setting got my back up. Much better to watch it from the first episode, because you get over all of that stuff pretty quickly then.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, too. It's sure to be lovely this time of year where you are. :)

Welcome to the Sherlock insanity. You are so not prepared... *evil grin*

Hah-- you're not kidding! My daughter watched the premiere, and then mainlined two seasons in her room off of Youtube. Now she's edgy because S3 has not started yet, and is rewatching the first two seasons with the grownups.

I can see my own doom on the horizon!

Cumberbatch makes me swoon when he's a ginger but I did find him gorgeous in Sherlock, too. I realize he appeals to a small group. But it is a stellar show!!!!

He's a marvelous actor, regardless of appearance, and again... that Voice. I first saw him in some costume-drama-type TV show or movie years ago, and I remember wondering WHO that was with the incredible voice... and then thinking that I could not believe he'd been cursed with that name. Really, both halves of the name are kind of unfair, but when put together? Poor guy.

Your daughter has marvellous taste! While Benedict Cumberbatch couldn't seriously be described as a hottie he's certainly exceptional in the role of Mr Holmes! And while Martin Freeman is brilliant as Dr. Watson he still looks just like a hobbit to me too!! :)

Packing for vacation? Hope you're going somewhere lovely. Me? Trying to stay cool; and failing miserably!

*hugs*

He makes a wonderful Holmes, and if one is going to pontificate, as Sherlock does, it helps to have That Voice.

We're just going up to Oregon to visit family. I'm considering other options for next year, but we're sort of trapped in that my parents (and two sisters) live up there, and my parents are 86 now. I'm wondering if next year, we should go up during the kids' Spring Break, and then try to go someplace else during the summer. Lauren and her schedule (Mock Trial, summer volunteer/internship/etc.) really make it hard to plan anything. This has been a problem for years! But as we discovered, potential Mock Trial state competitions also torpedo the first weekend of Spring Break. So that might be a time to do something less 'glamorous.' Not that our vacations ever are. ;)

I hear from other f-listies that it has been a tad hot and miserable out your way. My daughter thought it was ridiculous for Kate Midland to end a trip early because it was 89-degrees wherever she was, but I explained that in the U.K., that is ungodly hot. Plus, pregnancy just makes you overheat even more...

You're absolutely right that That Voice is made for pontification!! :) When you get to see the Hound of the Baskervilles edition don't think I speak like the 'locals' just because Dartmoor is on my doorstep!! Their accents are nothing like a proper Devonshire one! :)

I suppose by the time the kids get older and their education and work commitments become more important it's hard to find time for you all to get away. Still good to try to do something as a family though so I hope you do manage to get away somewhere. Who needs glamorous holidays anyway?!! :)

It has been uncomfortably hot over here in Blighty...it could be worse for me though because I live on the coast so sea breezes help to keep the temps down a little. I don't blame your daughter for thinking it ridiculous that Kate ended her trip early but you're right that 89F is a lot hotter than we're used to!! And she's very close to giving birth too so that didn't help matters at all, poor girl.

Yay, another one hooked to Sherlock! Congrats to your clever daughter :D I was a huge Holmes fan before and really didn't expect this new and modern approach to be that captivating. Turned out it was. Thanks to brilliant writing and casting I would say. Mr Cumberbatch is indeed perfect for the role - and I would even go so far and say that his air of intelligence has its very own sexiness. Plus That Voice, totally agreed. ;)

Enjoy your holidays, whatever you do! I had mine already, spent some time in the nice country of Denmark. Could do with some more free days though, as Teh Summer Hotness is persistent...

I would even go so far and say that his air of intelligence has its very own sexiness.

Definitely true for me. He conveys Holmes' brilliance with utter conviction, and you never question whether he's smart enough to play that character (Tom Cruise and Demi Moore as lawyers-- in the same movie-- was an unforgivable example of the opposite).

Were you in Denmark during the White Nights at all? I so desperately want to visit some country during that period-- or even Alaska, where there would be just that much more time to enjoy the scenery.

Seems like California isn't the only place getting baked right now. :(
Serena64serena64 on July 21st, 2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
Sherlock is fantastic. It just gets better and better.
The only problem now is that Benedict and Martin's careers have taken off, so there's no telling when (or even if) season 3 will get made. I really, really hope it does as season 2 ends on a real cliff hanger.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on July 22nd, 2013 06:40 am (UTC)
! No wonder my daughter is so flummoxed over S3 not being out yet-- she's stuck on the cliffhanger. Meanwhile, HSH and I are two episodes into S1. ;)

Well, I won't tell her about S3 not even having started. That would not be welcome news!
