Supernatural Gen Drabble: "Abundance" (G)
Title: Abundance
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam, Dean (Gen, Drabble)
Rating: G
Summary: Sometimes the middle of nowhere is a pretty good place to be.
Author's Notes: A writerverse team_prose entry on "Serendipity", written for the comment_fic prompt of Who could have known it was such a big sky?

x-x-x-x

Sam and Dean have been driving all day long. Now they're far between towns in some endless nowhere desert, on an unlit highway. Both are struggling to stay awake.

Dean turns off at a side road, pulls onto the shoulder a mile later. "Here?"

Sam nods, and Dean lays their sleeping bags out on the ground. Then the two of them settle down to sleep under the enormous canopy of sky.

"Look at all the stars," Sam whispers.

Dean watches them slowly blur before his tired eyes. They glitter in his memory like distant ghosts as he finally falls asleep.

Lovely.

You remain my favourite drabbler. So evocative with so few words.

Thank you! The combination of those two prompts led me write to how I wanted to approach this drabble. They really suited each other well. :)

I think it's the sleepiness of the mood that drives the quiet. That and the emptiness of where they are, other than the enormous and powerful presence of nature itself.

That's beautiful!

Thank you! I love the idea of the stars under such a big, clear sky being so amazing that they stay with you even as you're drifting off.

We just don't get a sense of that anymore, and it's kind of sad.

Perfect little moment between them. I love the intimacy of the scene.

Thank you! I love the setting as well-- being at peace with the "things that are out there" instead of at war with them makes for a nice change. :)

I like that there's both a sense of isolation and togetherness, a rightness of place despite how tired they are and that they're in the middle of nowhere. I don't watch the show (although I know the basic premise) and I like that it feels as if they're just hanging out even though it's likely they're on their way to fight another big bad. And it's nice that it probably wouldn't be as relaxing if they weren't with their brother; by themselves they might be lonely, with someone else they might not be able to just relax in that moment.

They glitter in his memory like distant ghosts.
Gorgeous line.

This reminds me that I need to get cracking on my longer comments! I've slacked off!

The moments of just "being" are so rare in this fandom (they're rarely shown in canon) that you can't help embrace them in contrast to a lifestyle spent chasing or being chased by one bad thing after another. It's a very goal-oriented life, and all the paths to the goal are full of stress and danger. I get exhausted just thinking about it, sometimes.

with someone else they might not be able to just relax in that moment.
This is true in so many ways-- both because their lives are isolated, and so they don't realy have any close friends apart from each other. But also because there's so much nonstop vigilance built in that they are each the only thing the other is ever remotely sure of.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting (and stretching outside your fandoms). :)
