I stole something when you weren't looking
(why didn't you notice it was gone?)
It wasn't easy. All the layers, memories, worries
were tightly woven, a veritable fortress
with you the only prisoner inside.
I stole something you weren't using.
The dusty corners spoke of long neglect,
the worn mechanics of something broken
but not beyond repair. I restored its rhythm,
hoping it would function once again.
I stole something you'd forgotten
(or simply buried too deep to find).
Whether you'd hoped to keep it safe
or couldn't remember where you'd hidden it,
I believed in it, even if you did not.
I stole the barriers to your happiness,
the fears that made you timid in the face of life.
I had no schemes or dreams of riches,
just a sliver of the truth to draw me forward:
I stole your heart because you stole mine.
