Supernatural Gen Drabble: "On The Run" (Sam, Dean, PG)
Title: On The Run
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam, Dean (Gen, Drabble)
Rating: PG
Summary (S5): What they ran from didn't even have a name…
Author's Notes: For gretazreta, who wanted Sam, Dean, and shelter.
Also for supernatural100 ("When the going gets tough").

x-x-x-x-x

What they ran from didn't even have a name, those times Dean drove Hell-for-daylight as if they could just leave their problems behind.

Sometimes running was all they could do, with destiny coming fast and utterly deaf to the pleas of desperate men. It wasn't an answer, but it beat waiting to be found.

Roaring down the highway side-by-side was the only safety the two of them had ever known. Sam watched the pavement spin out behind them. They might not know where they were headed but at least they were moving.

One way or another, they'd arrive there together.

...destiny coming fast and utterly deaf to the pleas of desperate men.

I love this sentence. It's so powerful in the way that it represents how utterly helpless humans are in the face of the greater forces. That's also refreshing after all the "You are in charge of your own Destiny!" tv shows/animes I've seen lately.

It's nice :) Thank you for sharing~ We see a different side of the brothers. They are rarely running away in ff in my experience.

it represents how utterly helpless humans are in the face of the greater forces.

That to me was all of the dread and helplessness of S5, in so many ways. It seemed like whatever choice they made, it would always turn out to be the wrong one.

After growing up as Winchesters, fighting evil and saving people, to be in a situation where you're told you have no power to change anything has to be incredibly frustrating and foreign.

"One way or another, they'd arrive there together".... ahhhhh that's perfect. And actually perfectly slashy enough for me, just like the show is!

Thank you so much, it's such a huge privilege to have something written for me, I LOVE IT. And this is very beautiful and so sharply put together in such a short amount of words. You're the queen of the drabble, in my mind.

I'm so glad you liked it. The prompt took awhile to catch fire, but when it did this vivid and very different scenario took shape!

The idea of "shelter" being more about each other and the only permanent "home" they've ever had was intriguing, compared to how we usually think of it.

Thank you for participating, and giving me this wonderful idea! ♥

this kind of reminds me of the end of nightshifter, with the boys sitting in the impala in their riot gear thinking "fuck, now the fbi's after us too". i like the sense of them running from something, rather than chasing after it. plus, "they'd arrive there together" - that's the sam&dean i like.

I thought of that scene in Nightshifter, and most of S5.

It's so uncommon for them to run from their problems, but when they do it's because they're in over their heads and they've run out of options.

The prompt drove me to try to capture that, somehow, maybe just because it's such a rare state for the two of them.

I think you've described this season in a nutshell. Lovely image to hold on to, the boys wandering as fast as they can around America's highways... the only safety the two of them had ever known.

Ooh! I haven't seen S7 yet (still getting caught up on S6), but I like the idea of things being "Sam and Dean against the World" again.

I've missed that whole feeling, where no matter how bad things got for the Winchesters, at least they had each other. It's as close to justice as they can hope for.

This is beautiful, sweetie. It almost reads like a poem the imagery is so vivid. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! This one is a different kind of setup, for sure, but sometimes that really helps drive an idea.

Thanks for reading!

*clings*

As scary as things get, when they have each other there's still some kind of hope. Oh, how we need that!

Looks like your intense little snippet gives us a good taste what this season is all about, hm?

I have got to get caught up with S6, clearly, so I can get on to watching S7. I hope there's that feeling in the show again of the boys being in it together, and that their bond and loyalty and combined strength makes a difference. I've been missing that in the last few seasons. :)

Aw, thanks, sweetie! :) I'm doing great! The main focus of my creative energies, these days, is training my two young border collies, and trailing the elder of the two in sheepdog trials. It's been good living out in my world and doing stuff. :)

I don't really miss fandom, per se, but I do miss good folks like you. Blessings to you, and love! :)

Oh, and I'm loving Season 7! :)
