SPN Gen Drabble: "Baby Steps Toward Independence" (Sam, Dean, PG)
Title: Baby Steps Toward Independence
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam, Dean (Gen, Drabble)
Rating: PG
Summary (Season 1): There are some things you should never pass up.
Author's Notes: A late birthday gift for celtic_forest, whose prompt of "Next time" unexpectedly went the Gen route.
Also for supernatural100, this is "The road less traveled."

x-x-x-x-x

The coastal highway curved past three motels.

"Dad and I stayed there," Dean said.

Sam hated being reminded that Dad and Dean had their own lives while he was at Stanford.

"Great porn," Dean added.

"Dean! How do you go from zero to TMI so fast? Is there a bus?"

"What?"

"Nothing..."

"Whatever. That motel has an Edgar Allan Poe room, but Dad vetoed it. Too expensive."

Sam suddenly remembered half the reasons he'd left.

"Next time we come through here, we'll stay," he said.

Dean grinned like a kid. "Seriously?"

"Yeah."

Because Dad had been wrong. Happiness was cheap.

Sam hated being reminded that Dad and Dean had their own lives while he was at Stanford → I just love this line. And I want to stay at an EAP room; very cool!

Even though he chose Stanford, it probably seems unfair that John and Dean kept on going without him. It's one of those irrational emotions that you know you shouldn't have, and yet you do.

There actually was (is?) a motel at the Oregon Coast with an EAP room, and I always wanted to stay in it too! But how utterly irresistible for a Winchester. It's as if it was made for them. :)

Very nice! Thanks for sharing it. :)

Thank you! I love the idea of the two of them geeking out in a Poe-themed room, for some reason. ;)

There's more to life than automatically saying "No" to everything, though sometimes it's hard for parents to remember that. ;) And I are a parent. :0

ooh, it's a tiny rollercoaster of emotions- just like the show in microcosm.
Seriously, very nice- and HOW can Sam not know Dean is a geek? I just don't get it. ?*ponders*

Eee! One of the best feedback phrases ever!

and HOW can Sam not know Dean is a geek? I just don't get it.
The homemade EMF meter should have been a complete tipoff, but Sam was too busy being a snootyface at the time to really register that. Though by the time they got to Underground Conspiracy Guy with his Mandroid theories, Sam may have become aware. :0

I can just see Dean wanting to stay in the Edgar Allen Poe room. Especially if it has some casks of Amontillado. Or a keg! And Sam's right.

Bonus points for a taxidermied raven! Which Dean would poke, over and over again, no doubt. Or put on his shoulder for the evening, like a pirate with a parrot. ;)

"Is there a bus?" LOL.

It's nice to know that Sam resents the live Dean and John led while he was at Stanford as much as Dean resents the life Sam had at the time. Well, not "nice" per se, but you know what I mean.

Dean should totally get to stay in the EAP room. I'm glad Sam thinks so too.

I do know what you mean-- both sides are the evidence of missing someone, and hating to have things go on without you, even though you know that's unreasonable.

Dean should totally get to stay in the EAP room.
It would be an awesome chance for him. Boy, just think if they made Star Wars motel room-- they'd be booked years in advance, with something like 90%+ of the reservations held by single, male basement nerds. \o/ Sees a franchise opportunity.

>>"Dean! How do you go from zero to TMI so fast? Is there a bus?"<<

bwahahahaha! also i love that sam resents that dean and dad went on living without him, because that's such a human, family-related response. and of course dean would want to stay in the poe room! especially if it came with a taxidermied raven.

and i mostly love that there really was a time when sam would've opted to stay in it just to make dean happy.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Wheehalfshellvenus on March 24th, 2011 06:43 am (UTC)
It's totally unfair to expect other people's lives to stop while you're off doing other things, but most of us do it anyway.

especially if it came with a taxidermied raven.
I think that part should be mandatory: If you don't have a taxidermied raven, you're not even trying.

And oh, how I miss those early days when the boys made concessions to each other, Dean because he knew what Sam had lost and Sam because he knew how much Dean had missed him. Good times!

Because Dad had been wrong. Happiness was cheap.

Really...it takes so little to make Dean smile. Lovely little glimpse into their lives.

Really...it takes so little to make Dean smile.
And if anyone ever needed some random acknowledgement of his little "wants" (other than food and sex), it's Dean.

So much easier for Sam to see this than John, I think. Plus, you have to suspect that Sam wouldn't find the Poe room a waste of time, either. :D

Thank you! Who could resist a Poe room? Especially in the Winchesters' line of work.

Nice for Dean to have his geek fun once in awhile. :)

Short and sweet! Yet you can see a few complex things. So cute to see Sam indignant over their father's treatment of Dean and making Dean happy without Dean really realizing.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on March 29th, 2011 06:34 am (UTC)
I think Sam's perspective on their Dad is much clearer than Dean's (which is one of the reason they fought so much about it in the earlier seasons). I've always suspected that it wasn't just John disagreeing with Sam, but also how he treated Dean, that led to Sam's frustrations with his family. Even for the "perfect" son, John didn't give quite enough back. Though that sure made it easier for Sam to see that there was no point in trying to be someone he couldn't.

I'm glad you liked this, and thanks for reading1

Love that line, i can so picture Sams outraged voice saying that.

It must be an ongoing series of ambushes for him too, because we know how Dean is. Even when you think you've anticipated the when and how bad... he still manages to surprise you. ;)
