SPN Gen Drabble: "This Tangled Web" (Sam, PG)
Title: This Tangled Web
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam (Gen, Drabble, Drama)
Rating: PG
Summary (early Season 5): Sam always remembered the biggest lies…
Author's Notes: Happy birthday elanurel! Something early for a change.
Also for Day 6 of the Bleeding Cuticles Roadkill Challenge, and for supernatural100 ("Lies").

x-x-x-x-x

Sam always remembered the big ones. A whopper involving the world's largest ball of twine was a lie for the record books.

Others were too weird to forget—'Teddy Bear Doctor' stood out above all the insurance adjustors, FBI agents, and CDC workers he and Dean ever pretended to be.

Hiding his past from Jess was a lie of omission, though his love for her was real.

But lying to Dean about the demon powers and demon blood… that was for a more important good.

Sam never realized he was already working from a carefully edited subset of the truth.

sam is just the walking embodiment of the idea that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, isn't he.... (i love the mention of the boys pretending to be teddy bear doctors. they'll only get to fake that once.)

The show certainly did that to him in S4, which I thought was unfair because it was very unlike who he'd been before. But there's an irony in how true to the saying it became, where he could never have forseen where those good intentions would lead.

Most random lie ever! \o/

Sam Winchester, just keep convincing yourself of that. Oh, Sammy....

Poor Sam. How could he know? Just a pawn in a larger, invisible game. :(

Your Sam near always breaks my heart. Why is that?

*puzzles*

Oh, because Venus is near unparalleled at Winchester angst and inner demon.

Aw, that's a lovely thing to say.

I have a lot of empathy for Sam, and how hard he's tried to ride the line between the family business and his own tendency to see the 'humanity' even in the monsters they fight. He doesn't dismiss them readily (it's a huge defining characteristic for him), and sometimes that comes back to bite him. *sigh*

Good fic... and Teddy Bear Doctor is one of my favorite eps/lines, as well as Lollipop Disease (though if I recall correctly, that particular one was Dean's lie).

Yes, that was Dean's lie, though I tried to word it so that it didn't imply Sam had actually said it (he'd only "been it," along with Dean). The whittling down from 139 to 100 words was especially difficult this time around.

Of all the fake jobs the boys have invented for themselves, I'm sure there's always a Seriously? We're tabloid reporters? moment where they think it will never get weirder until... Teddy Bear Doctor. That was a moment when Dean's tendency to 'blurt' actually worked in their favor. ;)
