If it were simple, there would be a word for why this happens—for why she and Michael fight and split apart, only to circle back together and start it all again.

Maybe there is a word, and it's something like 'stupid' or 'psychotic' or 'self-destructive.' Fiona doesn't care.

Psychology can't change the fact that Michael is the only one who really knows her, down to her affinity for both fashion and big explosions, and that he loves her all the same. He's nice but never a doormat (mostly). He's talented and exciting, and hands-down the best partner she's ever had on a mission or between the sheets. His touch can make her quiet, and his voice soothes the volatility that too often rises within her. There's a reason their paths have crossed so often, though she's held some of that information back.

If there were a word for what they have between them, she'd want it to be something like 'fated' or 'devotion' or 'forever.'

But Michael's obsession is justice, and Fiona's obsession is Michael.

Sometimes she's afraid they'll never get beyond their differences and needs, and that the farthest they'll ever make it is 'almost.'

Gosh, isn't this the TRUTH? Sometimes I want to be like, "Jesse likes you! Go for Jesse!" even though I love Michael so much. He's just so single minded, and infuriating. Seriously.

Well done. I really like this, and I can hear Fi saying it--like they gave her a voice over :D

I really feel for her. She loves Michael whole-heartedly, and while he loves her too, it just isn't quite a complete fit.

Plus, he's been backed into a lifestyle that she's always loved, and she can't understand why that isn't enough for him. Why keep poking the hornet's nest, and what will it honestly get him?

She doesn't see how much his honor matters to him, and how much he needs for his own country to consider him honorable. All of the people he helps, all of his friends and family knowing the truth of who he is... it will never be enough.

And he can't change for her any more than she can stop loving him. Ouch. :(

Wow. This is stunningly beautiful. It's the sad, sad truth, and just...wow. To see it from Fi's POV is really nice. I think this is a wonderful ficlet to sum up everything that Mike and Fi have...LOVE it. :)

Thank you! We always see Michael's POV on the show, and while we understand his position (usually), Fiona has a very different take on all of this. She loves him, she wants him just as he is, and she can't understand that he's not satisfied with the life he has right now. It's a transition back to where he wants to be, not a destination in itself, and he can't stop wanting his old life back any more than he can admit that it might not be possible.

For Fi, none of that is reason enough for Michael's relentless pursuit of that Answer-All brass ring. Not as a pragmatist, and even less as a lover. He doesn't understand why it hurts her, and she doesn't understand why he can't change.

It makes you just ache. :(

The end is soooooooooooooo sad! Good job tho.

We hope that won't BE the end when all is said and done, but if we're being truthful about these two characters, it's sure a possibility. :(

This is true. But I look fwd to it not being the end for them as well.

That was beautiful. Poor Fi. Sometimes I want to smack Michael and tell him to wake up and appreciate how wonderful she is for him. Single-minded men...

Even if she understood why Michael can't give up his personal mission, it doesn't change the fact that it comes between them again and again, and it hurts her terribly. :(

This captures them to a tee; Fi and Mike, trapped by their love for one another, frustrated by and yet attached to it.

It's like a love triangle, where Michael's "get unburned again" mission is the third part of the relationship.

Frustrating is the word! And in Fi's case, heartache as well.

It really does always come down to that triangle - Mike vs Fi vs Mike's job. It's a more powerful presence than any other man or woman in their lives, really.

I really, really feel for Fiona in this mess, the poor gal :/

Wow...I found this via a Google search and my am I pleased at the discovery. I'm relatively new to the fandom, just started watching Season 2, after watching Season 1 a couple weeks ago but I love the way you wrote this.

His touch can make her quiet, and his voice soothes the volatility that too often rises within her. There's a reason their paths have crossed so often, though she's held some of that information back.

- The word "evocative" comes to mind when I think of this drabble.

But Michael's obsession is justice, and Fiona's obsession is Michael.

- Very nice. And... TOTALLY!

I'm adding this to my memories.

I'm so glad you found this, and that it rang so true for you. Nice to know that Google paid off in such an unexpected way, too! You'll find more Burn Notice here on Live Journal (I've got a couple of the comms in my "Member Of" list), and other fans of this wonderful and intriguing show.

Even in Season 4 (now showing), this complicated dance between Fiona and Michael continues. She can't seem to leave him, but never fully has him either, and how we feel for her!

Thanks for the referral will check out some of them "comms" asap!

Do you watch White Collar I've actually written a Fiona/Alex crossover fic which I've posted on my LJ. I've got another plotbunny for those two in the works as well actually cause I find both shows so damn interesting! ; )
