SPN Gen Drabble: "Sometimes We Dream Of Stars" (Dean, Sam, Wee!Chesters, PG)
Title: Sometimes We Dream Of Stars
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Dean, Sam (Gen, Drabble, Wee!Chesters)
Rating: PG
Summary: Dean loved science…
Author's Notes: A late happy birthday to celtic_forest! I hope this one makes you smile.
Also for supernatural100, this is "Rockets."

x-x-x-x-x

Sam loved hearing Dean talked about school, though who knew why. It was mostly art and spelling and boring books, except for math and science. Science was great.

In Philadelphia, fourth-graders did experiments. Dean repeated them at home. He showed Sam magnetic polarization, solar ovens, and soda bottle rockets.

"C'mon, Sammy," Dean yelled, the rocket and bicycle pump tucked under his arm. They'd use the meadow behind the parking lot as a launching pad.

Dean made Sam stand back, then pumped the air in. "Ready?"

Fwooosh!

Sam shrieked with happiness, and Dean watched and grinned.

Sometimes school didn't totally suck.

Aw, that's cute.

Glad you liked it!

I shrieked with happiness!!! The feel of this is just wonderful.
Dean has as much fun watching Sam watch the rocket as he does watching it himself. Being reckless and protecting Sam at the same time - so Dean!
Thank you so much!

Yay!!!!

The transition from Dean's petulance at the beginning to his feeling of triumph (both at science and being the world's most awesome big brother) were what made this so much fun to write. Both halves of it seem so like Dean, and the innocent happiness at the end is so rare for them (it seems like a distant memory this season) that this has a certain warm fuzziness that makes me feel cozy, and I hope it did the same for you.

Denial! Denial and imagined happiness from the past-- that's what I'm clinging to now! :D
a rearranger of the proverbial bookshelf: Dean - wee heroembroiderama on March 21st, 2010 11:28 am (UTC)
Of course science experiments were Dean's favorite part of school! :D Awesome.

:D Those little seeds of school science are the kinds of thing that lead to "build your own EMF meter out of a Walkman"! :D

This happened. Don't know how you always get so much feeling into just 100 words. I'm grinning thinking of the boys doing experiments.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: weechestershalfshellvenus on March 21st, 2010 05:26 pm (UTC)
Hee! It seems to me like something that totally happened as well. I can SO see Dean getting a kick out of those experiments, and showing them off to Sam. And rockets? Best thing ever!

I love this, love this, love this sooo much. I have a thing for smart!Dean because we know that for all his self-deprecation of his mental prowess, he is one hot nerd!

I agree! I keep thinking of how impressed he was with the basement nerd in "Nightshifter" who'd done his own research into the case and had found out a lot of the truth-- except for the misfire on the "Mandroids" part.

We don't just have the things Dean has done himself-- we've seen how much he appreciates those abilities in other people. I just wish we got to see more of that aspect of him on the show, because I like both that trait in him and the broadening of his character that it creates. :)

i bet dean enjoyed that year in that school. :D this is so adorable - not just dean actually liking what he's learning, but sharing it with sam and sam liking it too.

I love the grudging admission there there IS some value to school, even after bringing home and recreating those experiments week after week.

And can you imagine, to a 5-year-old, how much every one of those experiments would seem like magic?

I love the innocence of young children, and how the power of science can be so captivating, especially when it's all new.

And even better to share with your little brother all the pieces of weirdness you've come to understand. :)

happy is as happy does: Dean - Supernaturalhappywriter06 on March 22nd, 2010 03:17 am (UTC)
*pinches Dean's cheeks* This makes me think of the homemade EMF reader.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: weechestershalfshellvenus on March 22nd, 2010 06:12 am (UTC)
Oh, me too-- the EMF meter was behind every part of this.

Having the courage and ingenuity to hack a walkman into something other than its intended purpose (heck, for an "unreal and impossible" purpose) is the hallmark of an intelligent and science-loving mind.

We've seen evidence of this part of Dean over the years, and I can just see him going totally nuts over the kinds of experiments and results covered here. :)
