Caveat Emptor...
We went out to our first movie in ages, which was the interesting and enjoyable The Ghost Writer, and all was well until the end-credits came up as "Directed by Roman Polanski." C.R.A.P! We would've boycotted the movie if we'd known, but the local paper had no review—just 4 stars and a plot-blurb. Now I feel complicit and dirty. :( Should've spent the evening watching Tracy Morgan wear a phone suit in a Bruce Willis movie instead.

Spread the word, please.

I mentioned that I was going to rec a couple of good White Collar fics I read last night. There was a Valentine's Day exchange at whitecollarfic, and I'm still skimming through the output from that and from various kink challenges. Unfortunately, I'm pretty vanilla, so I don't go much for spanking/bondage or D/s or threesomes (there's more Peter/El/Neal stories than slash or Het, by far). But I enjoyed all three of the following:

  • Nightmares (Gen, PG-13) by hoosierbitch. This is classic hurt/comfort with a gorgeous structure, linked together by the dreams Neal began with and the nightmares he has left, told in a poetry that makes the structure all the more powerful. When Neal was seven and cold and hungry he dreamed that he could fly.

  • A Mile Away And Wearing Your Shoes (Peter/Neal/El, R) by black_eyedgirl. Bodyswap with great characterization and pathos, and the eventual threesome is non-explicit. This kind of story reminds you of why "bodyswap" is a popular fandom trope—when it works, it's absolutely worth it.

  • You would wish long and long to be with him (Peter/Neal, PG-13)
by thosewerepearls. The subject matter is edgier here, chasing the threads of desire crossing into pain and possession, but so captivating, and god—the use of language. Perfect example of how things can be clearer in abstraction than in detailed overdescription.

  • If you enjoy these, please remember to give the authors some love!

I really need to catch up on White Collar. I'm several episodes behind, i think. But these recs look awesome. Thank you for making them! :))

You're welcome! I hope you enjoy the stories! We just have the Season Finale to watch, and I can't believe it's already here-- just 14 episodes? Really? :(

LOL. Now you will be checking any movie out on imdb beforehand to make sure it's not directed by him. xD

It's okay, I'll not watch it for you. I'll even go so far as to call all involved "actor whores".

I keep thinking he has basically retired, (in SHAME, like Woody Allen should), but then stuff like this sneaks up on you.

    Ugh. :(

Yeah, I know, I was watching the trailer for Ghost Writer and it went from "ooooooooooh" to "oh" very quickly. Damn movie industry supporting Roman Polanski. :/ But then, you know, I get torn because in most instances I separate the creative work from its creator and their personal beliefs and actions. So I don't know.

    Pisses me off.

In this case, it's pretty cut and dried for me, because Polanski should be IN JAIL where he would not be making any movies, and then audiences wouldn't be subjected to any sort of "talent vs. artist-himself" kind of issues.

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, you're on Team Petal! WOO-HOO! I'm so glad you're into White Collar. =D

Thank you for the recs, too. I haven't really had time to read anything at all, but it will be good to have recs for later.

As for the Polanski movie, that's terribly unfortunate. He's actually a decent filmmaker, so I can see how it would be easy to be lured in unbeknown to see one of his movies. =/

On Dusk (a cable channel up here), they keep showing Polanski movies, at least once a week, and I click on them and read the description and think, 'that sounds interesting...' Then, I see "Directed by Roman Polanski." It makes me sad.

    Anyway, *hugs* to you.

I refuse to call it "Petal" though. Gack!

I've enjoyed White Collar a lot, and I'm usually torn between the fact of Peter and El being such an amazing couple and the way Peter/Neal pings me just right. So it makes some of the slash hard to enjoy. You can see why so many people have chosen "threesome" as their solution, but that totally doesn't work for me in general. Two is the most people I ever want to be in that kind of relationship at one time.

Those fics are all good, though, and between the Gen, 3some and Slash I've hit most of the permutations.

He's actually a decent filmmaker, so I can see how it would be easy to be lured in unbeknown to see one of his movies. =/
I hate that the movie wasn't fully reviewed beforehand, because his name would have come up and we would have avoided it. I don't care how good a director he is-- he belongs in jail. And I hate even more the way Hollywood apologizes for him, as if his talent excuses his crimes. :(

Okay, full disclosure: I invented 'Petal'... ostaras_journey was pondering 'Neter' and 'Peal', so I just had to pipe in with 'Petal'. I believe I said, "This might be awful, but..." but it seems that it's awful in a way that's just right. It's definitely meant to be hilarious and completely non-serious, which I hope is clear. Their love is just so flowery. Hee!

As for the canon relationships, I feel the same way. I adore El - who knew Tiffani Amber Thiessen could be so awesome? - and her relationship with Peter is one of the best marriage partnerships on television. However, Peter/Neal pings so freaking hard! I mean, even in canon, their love is pure and true, although presumably Platonic. (The fact that the actors seem to have the biggest Man Crush on each other that I've ever seen doesn't help.) I don't have a problem with threesomes from a squick POV, but I tend not to like them because I am very keen on OTP's. However, in this case, I could see the three of them developing a strange but real three-way love.

In any case, it's quite pleasant to watch a show with multiple relationships that have strong chemistry. I think the casting overall has been great. There's lots of potential for good Gen fic, too, and hurt/comfort fic in particular. Oh, Neal!

I agree completely about Polanski. What I extra hate right now is how he's ruining do many other film people. Well, I guess they're ruining themselves, but still. :(

:D I mostly just don't like running names together to form a ship, like 'Misa' or 'Clex' or what-have-you. I'm totally good with Peter/Neal!

I don't have a problem with threesomes from a squick POV, but I tend not to like them because I am very keen on OTP's.
They generally DO squick me, because (lameness alert!) I am more about the romantic attraction than just the sexual attraction, and I don't really believe in that as a reality for a threesome. Plus, if I'm interested in reading sex/smut, it's usually because I have an OTP... so I run into the same problem you do with the breaking of the OTP. How could they? Didn't their epic love mean anything? ;)

One of the things I'd love to read, though I only poke through the White Collar fic sporadically (it's like a guilty pleasure that comes in waves or something), would be a Gen story in which Mozzie fully gets down with his earnest weirdness. Ep. 1x13 showed hints of him being all three of the Lone Gunmen rolled into one person, and then there's the random nerd-level detail on just about everything. Yes- let's have that in the extreme! \o/

I don't believe you said "This might be awful, but..." And rightly so, because it was so obviously a joke. What with you having a delightful and witty sense of humour and everything.

And I think I'd better stop right there ftm.

    Thanks for the recs!
I have the same obstacles with the situation - cheating on a partner is a squick for me, and threesomes rarely work well. Yet Peter/Neal must be written!
This show swept me in faster than most. I'm very reluctant to decide a show deserves my time, but Peter and Neal thwapped me upside the head!

Exactly! I sort of hate that I want the slash, but I want someone to do it well (and once in awhile, an author really pulls it off). And there are some Gen stories that I've really enjoyed as well, though I'm all about the characters and their banter or the hurt/comfort potential and not especially interested in reading Gen Casefic. Heck, I've never liked that. But give me a contextual skeleton that feels canon where the characters move through their friendship within that, and I'm totally there!
