"Who's that guy who keeps looking at you?"

Jess glanced over where Trish was pointing, and there he was—probably embarrassed now. He smiled and nodded.

"Oh. He's in Modern Lit."

"He's cute."

Sure is, Jess realized.

He'd asked questions in class, and his voice was deep, different—not flat or exactly twangy, but not East Coast or Californian. She couldn't place it.

"I don't know his name." She almost felt guilty. "Maybe when we're done, I'll introduce myself."

"Forget maybe. Try now."

Jess stood and made her way over. "Hi, I'm Jess."

He smiled, sunshine-bright and breathtaking.

"I'm Sam."

Like that what intrigued her was his voice, and then his smile lit up her world ;)

Not surprising, is it? Because when Sam/Jared really smiles, it's really something!

He smiled, sunshine-bright and breathtaking.

That is an excellent description! Nicely done, but I expect nothing less from you.

Thank you!

Oh, the full-wattage smile is really incredible. Much rarer for Sam than Jared, but just as amazing.

I liked this a lot. Thank you so much for playing with the challenges!

You're welcome! I save the prompts off just in case something hits me later for a challenge that didn't fire anything off right away. Never expected to work with this one, but it sure fit for the idea of this drabble. :)

i love that she can't place his accent. it's a little detail that doesn't have any significance for jess, but we can recognize it as the result of having literally grown up all over the country and having been exposed to pretty much every american accent ever. and of course he's got a sunshine smile. heh.

In reality, Jared's forcing down that twang a little, but it's still there. And given the history of the Winchesters, that's exactly it-- the boys at least are not really "from" anywhere, unless it's everywhere.

and of course he's got a sunshine smile. heh.
We've seen it on Jared, but rarely for Sam, partly because we grew to know him after his life's worst tragedy, only to have other tragedies pile on over the years. But without that weight, I think his smile (especially for Jess) would be closer to Jared's. :)

Very nice, good first impressions. I do love a little Sam/Jess.

Thank you! This has both the hint of the actual first impression, where he was still in the background for Jess, and then the moment where she actually takes notice of all of him at once.

A lot of life's 'first impressions' are spread out like that, though we tend to think of the concept as meaning everything all at once. :)

Everybody else has covered it perfectly - the voice and the smile are my personal kryptonite! ;) I also really like your point you made in a reply to another commenter, that Jess was vaguely aware of him from before but that this moment does capture the universal idea of a "first impression," being the one that has the power to form our inner concept of that other person. It makes me think of how good Sam would have gotten at trying to blend into the woodwork over the years from moving constantly from place to place and school to school. It's probably second nature for him at this point in his life at Stanford, and it also accounts for another point of Sam characterization that I adore to bits: how he used to seem genuinely surprised when a girl or woman noticed him (he does seem to be a little more used to it starting around S4). Perhaps my even more favorite part of that is how he could be both surprised and yet retain a certain quiet self-confidence when interacting with the opposite sex. *swoon material for sure* Thank you for sharing. :D

Exactly-- don't call negative attention to yourself, and move along like you've always been there. It carries the least potential for friction, but it's also the most comfortable mantel to assume if you're doing it repeatedly.

and it also accounts for another point of Sam characterization that I adore to bits: how he used to seem genuinely surprised when a girl or woman noticed him (he does seem to be a little more used to it starting around S4). That's one of the things that's always made him so appealing. With a gorgeous, aggressive older brother like Dean, he get used to being overlooked (first because he was just a kid, and second because Dean reaches out and grabs all the attention away). It's made Sam humble in a way that Dean is not, and it would take some getting used to the fact that you've finally grown into your own. Let alone that some women really do not like the aggressive approach. ;)

But Sam's confidence in who he is (which helped him escape the future John and Dean laid out for him) makes him intriguing instead of a nice-guy-doormat that women usually DO overlook.

So glad you enjoyed this-- and that you found every piece of subtlety that was in those 100 words!

Oh, I adore this, very much! I've been wondering what it would have been like for Sam and Jess to meet for the first time...this fulfilled all my expectations!

The show never really covered that territory, and I'd like to know too. We simply meet Jess in the Pilot (with disasterous consequences), and we find out later that Sam was on the verge of proposing to her. But what about all of that "before" the led up to it?
