Pimpage and Randomage
Signups are now officially open for the SPN kamikazeremix challenge. That post also links to details on how the challenge works, and I'll bet there are a couple of generalists among you who could really put it off. Check it out!

We started watching Tin Man last night, which really intrigues me so far. Way to do AU, in spades! Plus, I love the artwork. I'm surprised to see Neil McDonough in it-- I first saw him in "Boomtown," and now he's on "Desperate Housewives," of course. Something about his appearance just screams asshole to me, so we'll see where THAT goes. So far, though, I'm spellbound by the sideways approach to the Wizard of Oz story that this is taking.

Tonight was saw The Hurt Locker, which was fantastic. Kathryn Bigelow has such a broad spectrum of work ("Point Break" and "Near Dark" are both hers), and I was intrigued by what she might do with a war story. This was incredible- gritty, nervewracking, dramatic, frustrating and wounding in all the right ways. It focuses on a small bomb squad group on active duty in Iraq, an assignment that was already dangerous enough before coming under the command of a thrill-junkie with no common sense. Learning who he is, and what it sometimes costs him, proves to be a fascinating story. I'd rank it up there with my two Vietnam War favorites, "84-Charlie Mopic" and "Platoon."

Still hoping to see Moon, though it might have to wait for video.

I love the idea of Tin Man...I have distinct memories of dancing around the back of the kitchens at Taverna telling my littlest sister about the premise (her reaction was along the lines of "that's nice...now either pitch in or fuck off--Richard put lentils back on the menu").

I'm surprised to see Neil McDonough in it
He has done so much work, and I can never remember when he's in something. Take Timeline, for instance. He's the bad guy in that.

Come find me when you've finished Tin Man. I want to hear your thoughts.

We've finished the first two parts, and apparently there are two more (Disk 2).

I LOVE the artwork, and I love the twists on things like who Toto is and how he got that name.

Got Disk 2 at #1 in my Netflix Queue...

So glad to hear you are enjoying Tin Man so far? How along are you? I must say, at risk of coloring your experience, that I was totally with it up until the end. It seemed very rushed and anit-climatic, which is particularly odd seeing as to how detailed and well paced it was until that point.

We just finished the first two parts (of 4, apparently). So far so good-- great art direction, great twists on the original canon.

I hope I like the end better than you did!

I signed up for kamikazeremix and I am excited and scared. *lol*

Whoo! That's definitely how I felt the first time!

I'm not signing up this time around, even for pinch-hitting. I'd originally thought I might do that, but the details post reminded me of the two new pairings that have become really popular in S4 that I just can't work with-- Sam/Ruby and Dean/Castiel. Last time around, I was hoping not to get Het, but I figured I could work with a Sam/Jess or John/Mary or one of the boys with an OFC (because I have SUCH a limited imagination for evil). But I hate those other two pairings to pieces, and I have other fics due. So...

*keeps fingers crossed for you*

I am freaking out about getting a pairing I can't work with well... the two you mentioned + John/either S or D but as long as the slash or het is there... no porn on my end. Kisses! *lol* Honestly, what worries me more is warnings; with all the debates we've had as fandom as a whole I hope people are sensitive in what they submit since there's not even a caveat for "please no rape fic" etc.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on August 3rd, 2009 04:58 pm (UTC)
I totally forgot about the John/Sam and John/Dean possibility, OR the rapefic. I have SO many blind spots.

I think I could work with John/Sam or John/Dean in a tortured way, though. But I hated the S4 Ruby so strongly (she never felt like "Ruby" to me), and I just find the whole Dean/Castiel really wrong, from both sides. As in, I can't believe in it. So that's hard to work with.

One of my other random fears, which you probably don't share, would be getting a 20K+ story to remix. The remix would be painfully short compared to the original!
Maerhysmaerhys on August 3rd, 2009 05:02 pm (UTC)
I can deal w/ D/C or S/R better than John because even though the body autonomy issues with C & R make me pause anything w/ John will make me hurl. I'll do it but I'll hurl.

I submitted 3,500 length piece and I am hoping to get something in that vein. 20k remix in 4 weeks? It'd be a fourth of that if I am lucky.

I am excited to do it but there's a lot of stuff that is freaking me out too.

I like the idea of Kamikaze Remix as a challenge. Sadly, I have very little (posted) SPN fic to offer. I thought about maybe offering my genderswap fic, which could have some possibilities. But, do I really need another thing on my plate? And am I ready for what I might get? I think no. I still have my big bang, which is over 22K but still far from the finish line. And I signed up for Kink Bingo, which I'm not attempting to win but I would still like to write a few things.

I saw Kathryn Bigelow on The Daily Show - or maybe Colbert? - and I found the description of the film intriguing.

I am so very behind on movies. :P

I love the idea of the challenge, but I wish they would let you restrict your "pairing" genres. I.e., I'd be good with Sam/Dean or Gen, but I don't want Dean/Castiel or Sam/Ruby or Sam/OFC/Dean or anything like that.

Everything else about it is as tempting as ever! But I'm already behind on things I owe that take higher priority. *koff*

The film was really good-- one of those situations where even as you feel frustrated with one of the characters (and tense over his dumbass decisions), those are still very much true to the character and others like him. It comes off as very realistic, and gutsy as well.

I'm gonna see The Hurt Locker this Thursday, and I really enjoyed Tin Man you can see who've become one of my favorite slash pairings! I hope you enjoy it too! Ending and all.

On a side... how's the fam?
