Rec And Roll!
It looks like I might have a chance now to read one, maybe two Big Bang stories, now that my beta-work is done and there's a breather between birthdays.

Here's where you come in!

I'm looking for Sam/Dean and or Jensen/Jared, a standalone story (i.e., not part of a 'verse) that you absolutely loved. Not so much the clever, intellectual kind of thing, but a story that moved you or amused the hell out of you. A happy ending is a must, and I like the characters to sound like themselves.

What do you say? Can you hook a girl up? ♥

Hands down, this one called Stranger than Fiction.

It picks up where Monster at the End of this Book leaves off and it's funny and guh-hot and has a plot and is quickly becoming one of my favorite stories ever written.

Do you think I'd still like it, even though I hated "The Monster At The End Of This Book" with a burning passion? I.e, more fun crack and less Prophet Chuck and The Winchester Gospel and the other things that made me want Kripke's head on a plate?

Funny and hot sounds like such a great combination!

More fun crack, less Gospel and drunk!Castiel.

It's the boys reading fanfic, discovering livejournal and maybe there is something between them after all.

I'm not on your flist but I know I loved the J2 fics Know Your Damn Constituents by bekkis and annella's Counting the Steps to the Door of Your Heart and Topspin by lazy_daze.

Know Your Damn Contituents - Political boys
Topspin - Tennis players!!
Counting the Steps to the Door of Your Heart - So cute! Geeky, dorky boys!

Thanks for the recs! I'll check the summaries and see how those look.

I wish I had more reading time, but realistically I'm good for 1-2 stories in the 10K+ range a year. And I already betaed a 23K one. :0

definitely second obeetaybee's rec - that is an awesome fic and one of my favourites on there so far!

Well of course, that SECOND one I know. Intimately. :D

Be sure and tell Jas how much you liked it-- repeat commenters are always treasured!

I haven't started any of them yet (it's after 1am), so I'll take a peek at it tomorrow.

Gosh, I really have to get some of these saved off before my vacation. The one by withdiamonds sounds really interesting, and I've heard great things about runedgirl's story too. :D

Re: big bang ?

"Big Bang" is a LiveJournal term for a story that is at least 20,000 words long. There are Big Bang challenges for other fandoms (I've seen some bandslash stuff floating around), but the ones I'm interested in are for Supernatural or Jensen/Jared RPS.

You can find the goods for both of those here, and it will have stories from past years as well. If you like longer stories, there is a TON of good stuff over there. I usually don't have time to read things of that length, but for those who do... it's like Christmas in June/July when those start getting posted up every year. :)

I second the rec for benitle's fic. This is one Dean/Castiel fic that is nice in how calm the tension is: http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/86564.html?nc=4

This is an intriguing J2 fic, mostly because of the way it's alternately funny yet angsty: http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/79023.html?nc=3

Though this is my favourite Sam/Dean fic yet in the BigBang: http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/74665.html?nc=2

It gives a realistic portrayal of what happens when the brothers' relationship turns sexual.

Hee-- everyone keeps recc'ing Jas' fic to me, and believe me-- I know it intimately. I was the beta for it, and there was a lot of rewriting for de-Britting purposes. Fantastic result, though, and Jas always has such interesting ideas for her stories. I would never come up with that sort of thing in a million years!

I can't read Dean/Castiel at all, so I'll have to skip that one.

And I'm trying to remember if bloodkisses is who wrote that J2 Apocalyptic AU I love so much. Hmmm... I'll definitely save her fic off, and see if I can get to it on vacation. Thanks for the rec!

Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! You MUST read cormallen's The Silver Ring. It's just so fucking delightful.

(It's AU, but it's written from Jared's POV and despite being AU, it still seems appropriately Jaredish.)
Deadbeat Nymph: sam dean bleeding angstdeadbeat_nymph on July 4th, 2009 04:32 pm (UTC)
I also really liked runedgirl's and withdiamonds's Big Bangs, too, and though they have happy endings, they're quite majorly angsty along the way.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: JSquaredLovehalfshellvenus on July 14th, 2009 07:02 am (UTC)
I might be up for the angsty-becoming-bliss in a bit. It's a story type that I really love, and heaven knows I've used it myself!

Might save those to the hard drive, since I'll be almost Internet-free for the next two weeks. Let's hope I get some writing done, too-- this last week as been total suckage, thanks to lots of RL distraction.
Deadbeat Nymphdeadbeat_nymph on July 4th, 2009 04:38 pm (UTC)
Oh, yes: Here is the header for Cormallen's fic.

Here's her summary:

Summary: Everyone knows that nothing ever happens in quaint, sleepy New Exeter, but to hear Jared Padalecki tell it, the town's rife with adventure, from a fairy princess searching for her true love to neighboring mice redrawing the borders and engaging in mortal combat. Of course, everyone, from his parents to the mayor, also knows that Jared's been making up stories ever since he learned his ABCs, and his friends, the eccentric owners of The Amber Moon Magic Shoppe, only encourage him. So when Sandy and Jeff give Jared a magic ring, it doesn't mean an enchanted prince will be arriving to claim it. Or does it?

Okay, I know I'm really pimping this hard, but this fic made me smile and laugh and feel all kinds of warm inside. And the narrative voice is fantastic, IMO.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on July 14th, 2009 07:00 am (UTC)
I've started that one, and I love the idea of it all. It doesn't sound as much like Jared as I'd like-- there's a British veneer on the storytelling, which is always a problem for me. But I'm planning to stick with it!
