Nurturing
When Sam was in first grade they planted seeds in flowerpots. The other kids made pictures and stories while he wondered if he’d be there when those seeds finally sprouted.

He saw the seedlings but not the flowers. His family followed a group of hauntings to a new state one month later.

With Jess, their living room swam in greenery. Palms and ferns-- a nervous ficus-- crowded the sofa as he plowed through pre-Law texts. It was like communing with a friendly forest—the kind of life he’d never known.

He misses it in this road-tour Hell that never ends...

A Botany of Love
Their mother was a perfect rose, all softness, sweetness, grace. As they pass by someone’s garden, a gleam of yellow stops his eye. He imagines her nodding as they continue on.

Jess was a lily with a hidden center. That lovely, curving beauty and modest secret describe her spirit. He will leave one where she’s buried in California, when he can.

Their father is knotweed, fiercely persistent. An unremarkable surface guards its strength from watching eyes.

Dean is a thistle that only blooms when no-one’s watching.

But Sam is ivy, ever-reaching. Thriving, stubborn-- impossible to beat down. He survives undaunted.

Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Other good things, yes.

Hey, I thought you were off on a birthday jaunt with your parents! Well, many happy returns all the same-- hope you had cake, cake and more cake. God, I love it. *Sigh*

Glad you liked these-- haven't heard from you in awhile.

I totally love both these and wish I was awake enough to form something slightly more coherent.

Thanks, Clex! Why are you still up? I know I shouldn't be. BUT two fics to finish and post tonight, plus 4 away from the Sara 1-sentence thing being done (! Already!).

Which part hurt you the most out of all of these (I'm guessing it's something in the second drabble).

*sniffles*

I loved them both, but especially the first one--the idea that Sam was never able to stay in one place long enough for anything to really take root and grow.

Yes-- the lack of nurturing applies to him as well as the plants. He wants to put down roots himself, and just become what he thinks of as his true self-- but first he couldn't, and then he did, and then it was gone. :(

Thank you! Lovely icon to go with the mood too.

I've missed having you read stuff, Olivia. Too many of the SN people on my fic-list have been on a reading strike.

Oh, and-- totally need to comment on your drabble for last week's challenge. That was WAY different than I would have expected.

Thank you! I go back and forth on feeling sympathetic for Sam and at other times thinking that Dean has it worse. And yet, I have to acknowledge that though he gripes... Sam rebounds pretty darned well. And he has a more clear perspective on Normal than the rest of his family (but perhaps not on Duty).

Still want you to read This fic, and possibly suggest a more fitting title. I think you'd like it, AND moreover... I'm great at giving titles to other people, but for myself sometimes it's a forest<=>trees problem. :( Your own fic titles tend to be rather striking. "Secrets From the Edge of Night"? "Dreaming in Abstractions"? Something way, way better that I just can't fathom? ;)

I adore both of these, but the line Dean is a thistle that only blooms when no-one’s watching made me want to cry. In a good way, of course, cause I'm such angst junkie.

Right there with you.

It says everything about him, and how we wish that it were different. :(

Very glad you liked these :D

Thank you :) Sometimes drabbles let us find a single perfect line more easily than a longer story.

Written any more of these yourself?

Thank you :)

Yes, they are two separate drabbles. Sometimes I write more than one for the supernatural100 challenge, if the theme gets me going. For "Missing Scenes," I wrote two sets (1 Gen, 1 Slash) with multiple drabbles, as well as "Holidays" (same). And 4 total for the "Crossover" challenge, because really-- so many shows to run amok on cover.

You knew this wasn't the J-squared one, right? ;)

People as plants. I never would have thought of it.
I think you got Sam dead on!

There is such a permanence with plants something that if Sam ever got he would finally know his fight is over. I wonder if will ever have it in this lifetime or is he destined to never know such a thing?

People as plants. I never would have thought of it.
I usually try to do more than one drabble for these challenges, now that I've realized that it often makes the reading more interesting. This second one was wholly created around that single line,
"Dean is a thistle that only blooms when no-one is watching."

That one was so immediately true that it needed a concept to live in. But I think the other characters are described just as truly, if less strikingly so.

I wonder if will ever have it in this lifetime or is he destined to never know such a thing?
I think we all do. I read an incredible post-Apocalyptic fic just the other day in which Sam's knowledge/powers/inability to save the world become his destruction instead of his salvation. There are SO many possible outcomes (and so many good stories that may come of them). :D
