Supernatural Gen Drabble: "Passing On" (PG)
Title: Passing On
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam and Dean (Gen, Drabble)
Rating: PG
Summary (3x07, "Fresh Blood" coda): This was always Dean's special thing, his and Dad's…
Author's Notes: Happy birthday to frostian, who asked for Dean's thoughts as Sam fixes the Impala for the first time.
Also for spn_drabble, this is "Impala."

x-x-x-x-x

Fixing the car was always his special thing, his and Dad's. Everything he learned, Dad taught him—replacing parts, or devoting long hours to breaking the engine down and rebuilding it. It was Dad's way of showing trust.

Sam never wanted to learn, or had they made it impossible for him to try? Dean can't remember.

Now, biting his tongue while Sam finds his way around the engine, Dean realizes it's overdue—this legacy, this trust.

He should've shared this with Sam sooner, years sooner.

But God, even now… how he wishes handing it over actually felt like a choice.

Oh!

Ouch! My dad and I share the racing thrall and when siblings (or my stepmom) have, on occasion, poked a toe in the waters, I have to hold back from being a little snarly. Because they don't *understand* and think it's a hobby and not something in your blood. Luckily for me, it's only ever been a sometimes thing for them. And us? It's in our blood. It's ours.

And us? It's in our blood. It's ours.
I'm sure that's true for Dean and John, though at a time like that moment in S3 Dean must have wondered if they excluded Sam unintentionally.

Now the options are gone-- Sam's the only one left to care for the car Dean loves so much (and himself, by extension). What a conflicted feeling, teaching Sam competence with the car by hating why it's necessary. :(

aw, dean. :( i like his acknowledgement that he and john might have made it too hard for sam to show interest in the car. ow, tho.

All you can do is second-guess your choices in the past, because it's too late to fix them.

But "ow" for the reason he has to teach Sam how to fix the car now. :(

Oh that totally broke my heart.

That was such a hard moment to watch in canon. Dean said all those casual things about "showing Sam the ropes," but we all knew why Sam needed to be able to fix the car on his own. There was a really painful combination of brotherly bonding and angst in that one little scene. :(

Amazing how sometimes such an ordinary thing can mean so much between those two. This was lovely, thanks so much for sharing. :)

Amazing how sometimes such an ordinary thing can mean so much between those two.
And have so many layers of pain and history and love, all woven together. Things are rarely simple for the Winchesters-- there's subtext behind everything just waiting to surface and break your heart.

I didn't realize you were another dual-fandom person! Always nice to find more of those. :)

Guilt, memories, anxiety and angst all wrapped up in a single moment. It's amazing how something that should be good (and he even tries to spin it as "good" for Sam) is actually so painful. *sniffles too*

Thank you! And god, what a painful moment that little scene was. I'm surprised Dean could even manage to swallow his beer, around the lump in his throat that had to be choking him (all the while trying to be casual for Sam, like Dean wasn't staring the end of the world in the face). :(

They've had so many little "codettes" on the show, but THAT one was absolutely perfect. So much was happening in it, a form of necessary agony that was hard to watch just knowing how much it must have hurt both boys. *sniffles*

Season Three, what a heartbreaker you were! And how I wished S4 would give some relief from that, when in fact the opposite is true. :(

Oh, man. This just aches. Poor Dean. It's all he has, everything right there, Sam and the car and what a helluva legacy to leave behind, but it's his and I just - gah. That whole scene broke my heart, and you've recaptured that, plus some, so beautifully.

I dunno who I want to hug more, Dean, Sam or the Impala - maybe all three ... *wibble*

I think that moment really brought the idea home for him that his leaving will be final, and that there will be no-one to take care of either of Sam or the car (his two prized possessions) but Sam himself. There's guilt and grief and a hollow sort of pain in all of that, and heartbreak is right!

I'm so glad you felt this drew that scene out well-- feels like twisting the knife, but then again... it personalizes the agony too. *sniffle*

Oh Dean. I think that's all I can say.

So much of Season 3 left me feeling that Dean would have been luckier to die right away. Living through that one year must have been its own smaller form of Hell. :(

Nicely done! I loved that moment in Fresh Blood, no matter how much it broke my heart; I kept coming back to it when I was writing my 41 Impala drabbles in the countdown to the season four premiere, just because knowing that the Impala would be Sam's last tangible link with Dean hurt so much.

Me too-- it hurt, but it was also perfect.

I can imagine! And the Impala figures so prominently in Dean's life, and what little (in terms of possessions) he carries with him. 41 drabbles on the Impala is amazing, BTW. :)

I hoped it would meet with your expectations, and that you weren't envisioning something non-angsty. I couldn't see a different mood for this setting other than angst!

Many happy returns to you, and I'm glad the rest of the birthday went well! :)

awwwww Poor Dean!
I absolutely loved this scene! I thin you really picked up on the tone of letting Sam in but also the reality of Dean's deal.
thank you so much for sharing this!

I absolutely loved this scene!

You have an icon to match it!

That was such a great scene-- a little bit of finally sharing the car with Sam, a little giving up of control, and a lot of angst and heartache. *sigh*

Your drabbles always have a way of getting way beneath the surface of the boys' characters. Lovely piece.
