Word Count: 200

x-x-x-x-x

Nothing changes in winter, not really. The dormant sluggishness of the streets is an echo of life, where everything waits to begin again after the thaw.

Michael is seventeen when Lincoln gets out of prison the second time. He waits at the bus station, cold and uncertain as the parade of forgotten people passes through, but the world becomes a whisper when Lincoln finally appears. All Michael sees then is blue eyes and dark lashes, a weary smile growing stronger in answer to his own.

Lincoln is home.

They hug, warm and tight in the gritty crush of strangers, then move out to the street. Lincoln looks around slowly—taking everything in, relearning the sense of freedom—before turning his face toward the softness of the sky. Puffs of white fall onto his cheeks and lips, ice-crystal kisses that last only seconds before fading away.

Michael watches, feeling something inside himself break at that innocence and beauty, at the sudden desire to touch Lincoln everywhere those snowflakes fall. He can't—shouldn't—but the thoughts keep coming, faithlessly melting him from the inside out.

Lincoln unseats Michael's reasoning, shifting truth and time.

Lincoln is home again. For Michael, that changes everything.

Hey lady. 2009 is my year of reading and writing dangerously on the flist before (or in case) it goes away forever, so here I am.

I love the cold here. It's very atmospheric and reminds me of the scenes in 'Brother's Keeper' (sans ear muffs) And if Michael is 17, how old is Linc in Canon's Canon (ie: the actual storyline they established in S1?) I suspect 20 or so?

Loved the feeling of this. The sense of Michael unable to control his urge and need to touch Lincoln, the hug b/w strangers. The sense of the future about to change now.

Thanks Halfshell.

The disappearing f-list had better not happen! Though there were a few hours today when I thought it might have. *bites nails*

Dangerous reading and writing! I like that idea. You did, what, three pornlets for this challenge? I failed on this first one, though I'm hoping to take another shot at it before time runs out. :0

It kind of has the atmosphere that "Icicle Palace" does, which was very much inspired by "Brother's Keeper." And I'd hoped to make this story part of that context, but it became something else instead. Lincoln would be about 21 here-- somewhere after having LJ with Lisa and breaking up with her, and we know that he had at least one or two stints in real prison (as opposed to Juvenile Detention/Juvie). There's a certain hopelessness for the reader in knowing that Lincoln keeps going back to prison over time, and that his failures keep getting worse.

The sense of the future about to change now.
I'm glad you noticed that! Michael's feelings have changed, but readers know that he hopes Lincoln will also have changed (just as he must have hoped every time Lincoln got out of prison). It's such an unusual place to be, as a reader, feeling all of that along with Michael and knowing that it's already too late.

Thanks so much for reading! :)

*sniffles and not because of my cold* Gawd, this is beautiful. Every friggin' word. I got nothing else. *speechless* I gotta save this one.

I'm so glad you liked it! Funny how sometimes the feelings/phrases are so much more powerful in the shorter pieces. It's more raw and true with so few words-- a whole concept that gets inside you at once and you just know everything it means.

I tend to forget that it's one of the reasons I started out with such short pieces way back when the show was new.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comments! *hugs*

I really missed your Michael/Lincoln. <3

I miss writing them, and it's so nice to have a challenge like this bring them back. I made it to the porn in the second story, and yet I like both of these very much-- so different, but equally Michael/Lincoln. :)

Thanks for reading!

Awww... wonderful!

"... the world becomes a whisper when Lincoln finally appears."

This one line sums it up perfectly. The wait, the desperation and the longing - all gone when Linc is back.
Well, I wouldn't have complained if you went on with your smut-plan, but the lack of it makes this fic all the more fragile and tender. You made me smile :) Thank you!

I'm so glad you noticed that line-- it was one of my favorites, because of the sense that nothing even registers inside or outside of Michael at that moment other than that Lincoln is back.

There's a certain sense of soft romance to this one, full of hope and possibility. I don't regret it either, because it's such a nice (and rare) flavor.

But in fact, I was able to write a different one that DID include porn: Need Like Burning. So now I've got both flavors of M/L. :)
