"I really missed this," Sam said, watching the tide roll into the shore.

"When you were little, we'd make sandcastles and jump over waves. You'd bury me and I'd work my way free."

"Sand-monster Dean!" Sam laughed. "I remember. Always wished we could live here..."

"You should've gone to college in Santa Barbara."

"Better program at Stanford, but I was tempted. Still want to see Hawaii."

Dean smiled wistfully, then shuddered. "Can't drive there."

"I'll drug you someday and we'll go. You'll never even notice."

"Maybe. Want to go back in the water?"

Sam bumped Dean's shoulder. "After another beer."

Awwwww Happy SamnDean makes me happy too :)

Me too-- I so want them to be happy, and yet it happens so rarely. Every little moment is all that much stronger for it. :)

I love the ocean possibly more than Sam does, and it's such a peaceful place that the idea of the two of them being there is somehow soothing. :)

Thank you, Claire! Sometimes it seems like happiness is something that has to be persuaded out of Winchesters-- as if there's always too much important stuff to be done, and taking time for themselves is not allowed. It has to sneak up on them while they're not looking. :)

Aw, so good to seem them happy. I could so imagine them having this moment.

Me too-- and what's more, I so want them to have more moments like these.

Happy fic is always good. Love it when they have happy childhood memories.

I do too-- especially when they must be pretty rare for Sam (I think Dean turned a lot of the 'bad' into 'exciting and awesome,' or had a really good selective memory).

I especially like having remembered happiness bleed over into the "now" and create more of it. :)

Yay, I'm so glad! Happy Sam and Dean makes me feel happy, and I liked the idea of it being something that involved the two of them than just the Stanford period. I'd for all of Sam's happiness to be his time away from his family.

Sand-monster Dean! *makes sound only dogs can hear*
I can so believe in that being the best part of the "burying" for both of them-- the 'after,' where Dean lurches up all encrusted with sand and zombies his way down the beach after tinySam. :)

Happy, happy birthday and best wishes for the coming year! ♥

Lovely but with an underlying sadness, moments like these are a rarity for those boys.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on December 7th, 2008 07:07 pm (UTC)
Yes! I sometimes wonder if the sadness is always within the boys or simply always within the reader, because we know how rare and fleeting those moments were and it brings a feeling of melancholy to even the good parts.

Lol, I am so damaged. This is perfect. ;-)

:D It's not you-- I think it has the same effect on everyone: "Why didn't they have more of this? Why?" *sniffle-sniffle*

Just awwww.

Also, drugging Dean to get him to Hawaii is strangely amusing.

Poor boy should have a chance to go there, and he is NOT the first person to have a crippling fear of flying. I'm with Sam-- why avoid something good when you can work around the problem?

Though I do wonder how much pool-hustling they'd have to do in order to come up with the money. :0

Aw, I really liked this... Yay happy boys!

And I go to UC Santa Barbara, so that mention in the story made me extra happy. :D

I've heard it's gorgeous, and it's far enough south that it's a warmer beach instead of what I'm used to (Oregon and Northern California). Years ago, I knew two guys who'd gotten undergrad degrees in Electrical Engineering from there. They spoke highly of the location!

This is really cute! Nice to see the boys at peace for once :P

It's heartwarming, isn't it? I'd love to see more snippets like this on the show-- some sign maybe that they've learned a few things their father didn't about trying to balance their lives. Though Season 4 doesn't lend itself so much to that. :0

Warm and fuzzy - just what we need in the midst of all their angst and agony. Thank-you! ♥
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on December 9th, 2008 07:08 am (UTC)
Oh, exactly-- I keep thinking the angst will abate for awhile, but then it's back again as fierce as always. Even the lighter episodes tend to be comic rather than light-hearted where the boys are concerned. And I'd really like to see them have some happiness together, and not have it be so rare and grudging.

:) Fanfic-- reshaping the world the way we'd like it to be!

I love you for your beautiful words. Have I mentioned that lately? *SMISH!*

Me too-- and a lot more often than 'never' or even 'sometimes.' I always hoped somehow that with their father gone, along with his iron rule and the divided loyalties that caused between the boys, that they would arrive at a more healthy sense of balance between duty/responsibility and sanity. I still hope that!

Have I mentioned that lately? *SMISH!*
Awww! That's exactly what I needed, especially this time of year. Thank you!
