Supernatural Gen Drabble: "Loyalty" (Bobby, PG)
Title: Loyalty
Author: HalfshellVenus
Character: Bobby (Gen, Drabble)
Rating: PG
Summary: (post-S2, "IMTOD") The demands of loyalty are rarely easy.
Author's Notes: Happy Birthday to tsuki_no_bara! I know how you like the angst, so here's a little snippet (with Bobby) for you.
Also for supernatural100, this is "Regret."

x-x-x-x-x

The boys have been here two days now, but it's almost as quiet as before.

The Impala's out on the lot, as broken as the boys are underneath their silence. The car is covered with blood inside (too much blood—Bobby fought in Vietnam, he knows what it means). The reality doesn't add up.

The look on Dean's face tells half the story, and the way Sam follows Dean around like he isn't sure they'll get to keep him…

Bobby got those supplies for John. He knew what they were for.

He'd still hoped John wouldn't have to use them.

That was really great, especially loved the last line.

It occurred to me yesterday what an awful position John put Bobby in-- because while Sam didn't know what the supplies Bobby gave him were for, Bobby actually did.

And yet, there are the two boys and their grief in front of him, and he can't 'unwish' Dean still being alive.

*Sigh* I feel for him-- we tend to forget that John's death was hard on Bobby too.

Oh, so poignant. Great job, hon.

Thank you so much! Oh, Bobby-- loyalty demanded what he did for John, and then it demanded his silence afterward. *sigh*

BTW, I just listened to tsuki_no_bara's podfic of Memento Mori yesterday and I loved it. Really touching without being cloying. It's a perfect story for Veteran's Day.

Oh, I'm glad you liked it! I was thrilled at her suggestion to record it for Veteran's Day, and I need to listen to it myself when I can get the technology together.

"Atonement" was podficced years ago before there were any iPods at our house, and I've wanted to hear how those turned out. *feels like a dinosaur*

LOL - I know what you mean about feeling like a dinosaur. Thank heavens we're not extinct yet! :-)

Oh, I'd love to hear Atonement! Do you know where I can find it?

Oh, boys.

Lovely...

I still remember the bleakness of early S2 like it was yesterday. Ouch.

Aw, Sam.

What a heartaching slice of how things were for them after IMToD--and how much Bobby's hurting for them gets through as an undercurrent.

and how much Bobby's hurting for them gets through as an undercurrent.
For them, for himself, and feeling the regret over John's choice while knowing that even thinkingthat is like wishing Dean were dead instead of John.

What an impossible position to be in. :(

but the angst makes me cry! :( but you do it really well. and i love this little reminder of bobby's part in john's deal - he knew exactly what john was going to do, and he couldn't stop him, and i love that he can put two and two together and just know how things went down.

also! thank you. :D

Sorry! Should I have gone for the crack instead? You mentioned that you could have had more angst in the longer drabble set, and this is more how I would be tempted to take a S2 drabble. The tragedy that was IMToD-- ouch!

he knew exactly what john was going to do, and he couldn't stop him, and i love that he can put two and two together and just know how things went down.
And know his part in it, even if it was John's choice to make. *sniffle* It must have been damn hard being John's friend, right to the end.

Many happy returns on your special day, and angst-free wishes for the coming year. :D

imagine being bobby and essentially helping john sacrifice himself for one of his sons, and a year later watching that son do the exact same thing for his brother. i wonder if one of the reasons john had so few friends at the end was because he made these kinds of requests from the people who loved him.

altho i can't imagine bobby thinks being friends with the boys is a cakewalk....

the first few episodes of s2 were heartbreaking. (much more so than the beginning of s4, or even most of s3.) and i'll be honest - i don't have a high angst tolerance, but your angsty drabbles are so good (partly because they're, like, bite-size nibbles of ow, and they really pack a punch in a few words) that i don't mind. besides, i can't complain about a birthday drabble. :D and i can just mentally slot this in with the rest of the sweet charity drabbles for a slightly larger set.

I can understand that entirely-- even though they're full of ache, you're not getting hammered with it to the tune of 700+ plus words, so you don't get the full-immersion effect that can be hard to crawl back out of.

and i can just mentally slot this in with the rest of the sweet charity drabbles for a slightly larger set.
Exactly! :D

Damn! Like the end of the last episode wasn't enough crying for the week, you give us this. Love this line: The Impala's out on the lot, as broken as the boys are underneath their silence. And that last line started the tears.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on November 23rd, 2008 08:19 am (UTC)
*sniffles* The broken Impala was such a metaphor for their fractured family after that crash, and it seems so wrong that it was the scene of what led to their final tragedy. :(

the way Sam follows Dean around like he isn't sure they'll get to keep him… what a perfect line, I love it!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on November 23rd, 2008 07:20 pm (UTC)
That combination of being on the verge of losing Dean (I don't think Sam realized how very close it came), and then having only Dean left-- who is too broken to talk to you or share in the grief of losing your Dad-- that would make anyone cling, I think.

The ANGST in that one line ...
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on November 24th, 2008 06:05 am (UTC)
Oh, it just brings back all the incredible torment of early S2. When the boys were tortured, and Dean wouldn't talk to Sam, and then he finally hacked the Impala half to death. *cries*

"he isn't sure they'll get to keep him"
I loved that line.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on December 15th, 2008 07:48 am (UTC)
The way Dean showed no signs of ever coming back at the hospital, until suddenly he was there and John wasn't-- I can't imagine Sam not feeling like the other shoe is going to drop at any minute. He has no way of knowing that it already happened, and Dean being alive is the result.
