"So, uh, I've decided to branch out," Dean announces.

"Into what, Jujitsu? Needlepoint? Or maybe health food."

"Shut up. I meant the music. In the car."

Sam stares. "What brought this on? Wait—not that thing from before? Dean, I really don't mind."

"How can you not mind? I'm surprised you haven't killed me. So, maybe some R&B? Or something more recent?"

"You have absolutely no idea what's happened in the last quarter-century, do you?"

"No," Dean admits. "Just don't make it girly."

"Don't worry." Sam fiddles with his iPod and plugs it in: "It's time you learned about grunge."

And this is how the truly insidious evil of Sam's nature is revealed. :D

Thank you! Hope you're hanging on through the end of the term!

Bwah! Now I have the image of Dean listening to "Let's Get it On" as a way to pick up women.

"Let's Get it On"
Oh, lordy. I can't figure out whether he'd object on musical grounds, or whether he'd be too mesmerized by the idea behind it. ;)

Just the thought of Dean listening to grunge... of Sam introducing him to it... *approves*

I about fell off the chair when Dean said he listens to just five albums, over and over. Because that sounds so very wrong, considering the wealth of music...

Thank You!

The boys is SO overdue, honestly.

I was hoping that comment of his was metaphoric and not literal. :0

Heck, I think I'm at five albums on Led Zeppelin alone. Plus, why is Dean not listening to The Who? Even in the era of music he already likes, there's more than 5 albums worth. :0

Soundgarden! Pearl Jam! Nirvana! Dean's overdue for discovering those bands. ;0

I think so too-- Soundgarden alone is going to be a huge surprise to someone who loves Led Zeppelin as much as he does.

I'm glad you enjoyed this-- thank you!

Although I agree, he would totally get into some old skool funk. (pictures Dean grooving to George Clinton)
It's hard to be sure, because funk kind of varies in its appeal.

Grunge, though... he has no idea what he's missed out on. ;)
devon99 on November 8th, 2008 06:41 pm (UTC)
Fantastic as always.

I think maybe Sams got it right, Dean might like grunge.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on November 8th, 2008 08:52 pm (UTC)
I think he would too-- it has a lot of the same appeal as Led Zeppelin, for me. I think Dean is going to love Soundgarden, and some of STP, definitely. :)

Aw, this is cute. And hee, is Dean about to discover Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins?
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on November 8th, 2008 08:53 pm (UTC)
And Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots, and maybe Nickelback and Pearl Jam.

He will be shocked. He missed an entire period where he could have turned the radio back on. Too bad it's over! :D

:D I really don't think he has! Everything after the early 70s or metal might as well not exist for him. :D

Thank you! Poor Dean, it's probably killing him to make the offer. Little does he know that there's stuff worth finding out there. ;)

Wait until Dean finds out he likes the stuff. It'd be like, a concession or something, having to admit that to Sam. ;)

Oh my god, oh my god, you don't even know how this touches me. I feel exceptionally snuggly towards you right now.

Last year, when I saw 'Dream a Little Dream of Me', that part when Dean said that his music was Dad's, I was filled with sadness. I decided that I would make a mixtape for Dean of music that I thought he'd like that was definitely not his father's music.

Okay, okay, so many months have passed, and I still haven't finished it, but I've got most of the mix decided. I'm still not sure if I'll actually send it to JA, as was my original plan, but anyway...

I think that there's a good deal of grunge that Dean would like. I think some Nirvana would go over well, especially In Utero. And I also think that Pearl Jam would be good for him - in retrospect, they do have a sort of classic rock thing going on. I never really listened to much Soundgarden - for no particular reason, I just didn't - but I could see Dean liking them too. And furthering that, maybe Temple of the Dog?

For my mix, I omitted anything that I thought he would have known, or at least heard of, for the most part, and kind of went in another direction, not so much a musical education sort of thing, but clearly he needs that too. =D

Pearl Jam sounds like classic rock, and I'd like them better if Eddy Vedder's voice didn't quaver.

Soundgarden... really interesting rhythms (often not simply 4/4), and not afraid to shift in and out of them, much like Led Zeppelin. There's an STP album I love all of (but only one), but Soundgarden hits home more often. Nirvana-- the guitars alone would sucker Dean in.

Now I'm thinking I should get more familiar with Temple of the Dog. :D

I'm not sure what he's familiar with. I have the feeling that he turned off the radio years ago when classic rock turned from 60's/70's into the 80's, and that he listened to his old tapes for years before the original ImpalaDeath.

So I'm assuming that it's all knew. And that he missed the entire grunge movement, which was utterly made for him!

grunge is a brilliant place for sam to start. i agree that dean would like soundgarden and stp and nirvana. and alice in chains - i mean, layne staley even did the most rock star thing ever and died of a drug overdose. :D

the poor impala won't know what hit her speakers.

(i think he might like let's get it on, for the message if nothing else. and marvin gaye's voice is smooooooth.)

Forgot to mention Alice In Chains, but I don't see how Dean could resist the sound and the guitars.

the poor impala won't know what hit her speakers.
If Dean's been playing Metallica in there, she's probably up to it. The lead singer's screechy voice could blow out the high end in a single song!

It's only one step from there to Barry White, I'm telling you. :0
