Drive-by Pimping...
Signups for mini_wrimo continue through tomorrow! I've signed up for the 3rd year running, with my usual 100 words a day commitment. BUT! In the past, I've met it every single day-- and that includes when traveling out of town for Thanksgiving. :0

Do it. You know you want to!

Regarding last night's House, M.D., I finally have to acknowledge that I'm not loving this season all that much. The medical mysteries are still great, and I like the minor characters very well (I kind of love the P.I. guy, who is smart, perceptive and yet also oddly accepting). But the main problem is that House himself has finally become too much of a jerk-- it's starting to affect my enjoyment of the show. We've always known that he's not a nice man, and that he has a wicked sense of humor and likes to play with people's minds. But this season isn't so much 'teasing' as just outright cruelty and obstructionism again and again, and we've almost entirely lost the leavening factor of those occasional glimpses of humanity. Are you listening, show? You need to pull back a little. Also, your trailer ads of "What's that rascal House up to next week?" sound like you're running a soap-opera. Not good. :(

Slept badly last night. Spent a lot of time tossing and turning over various people on my f-list being mad at me and the unhappy details of the coming year's office Health Benefits changes (summary: lots of little cost increases absolutely everywhere). Then I got up, took half an antihistamine, and went back to bed and finally slept. Later dreams featured some only-in-your-sleeping-mind revelation about Obama's first two names, "Barack Hussein" being somehow paralleled to "Baruch Hashem" (Hebrew, could be translated as "Praise God"). Okaaaaay.

But was it worse than the dream about military training demonstrations involving burning down sections of forest?

I'm not mad at you, Karen! *squishy hugs* Sorry things are tough for you right now.

It's really hard when our favorite shows begin to let us down. These are the things I look forward to when everything else is in the crapper, so I feel your pain, even though I don't watch House.

I highly recommend The Mentalist. Awesome Aussie lead, how can it go wrong? *g* At least for now, anyway...

I see we both had the same idea for comment icons LOL...nothing like Snoopy to make things cheery.

I'm not mad at you, I swear! (To prove it, I am using one of the cute icons.) Unless I should be and I don't know it LOL.

"Barack Hussein" being somehow paralleled to "Baruch Hashem" (Hebrew, could be translated as "Praise God").

That is making me giggle, and I have to tell that one to my Rabbi, cause he has a wicked sense of humor.

I don't think I've ever seen BBQ-chef Snoopy before. Maybe he's preparing a cookout for his little Bird Scout charges. ;)

It's a message! Or something. Funny, because I looked up translations of "Baruch Hashem" before posting that, and... I didn't agree with them. :0 They didn't seem to have the right flavor of my understanding of that phrase. But what do I know? 7 years of kids in a Jewish daycare doesn't teach you everything!

I'll have you know it's all your fault....if I fail at a measly 100 words a day I'll be so sad. But I did sign up- eeep.

So you must kick my ass....*please?*

Ha-HA! Commitment is the first step!

You can do it, you know you can. Even if it's writing stream-of-consciousness journaling or drabbles, it can be done! \o/

I too found House to be really over the top in last night's episode, and generally I am very tolerant of House the meanie. I wasn't sure if it was just the mommy in me or what.

I've been mostly tolerant before (the episode where he referred to some guy's doomed wife as "This is just her meat" really bugged me), but it's no longer isolated moments this season. It's a persistent tone, and it's a little too much.

And I was incredibly pissed off at all of his dealings with Cuddy this episode-- mean just to be mean-- in much the same way as with the Wilson-driving-him-to-the-funeral episode really hacked me off. He's just too much work for other people, and at this point virtually no reward. :(

I think it's more the mental churning over vague unhappy thoughts, where when you're tired but not actually asleep you get stuck on them. But there are a few people who are acting as if they're mad, and that's always upsetting. :(

Thanks for the kind wishes!

I want a Snoopy icon! This is the "cutest" one I've got. I'm a little one track on my icons. Loss of sleep sucks, cause it impacts the whole next day. I really like this part of your dream: Obama's first two names, "Barack Hussein" being somehow paralleled to "Baruch Hashem" (Hebrew, could be translated as "Praise God") Hope you get some sleep soon. Rant on politics if you need to. If I don't agree, I'll just ignore it, but won't get mad.

That one's pretty cute! I need a Snoopy or some other generic "Hee!" icon (though I did save off one of Homer tickling SpiderPig, but it doesn't have the same feeling to it). ;)

I'm glad you liked the mixed Arabic/Hewbrew mistranslation thing. Only while asleep does that kind of thing ever make sense. Then you wake up and think, "So they start with the same letters-- so what?"

Rant on politics if you need to. If I don't agree, I'll just ignore it, but won't get mad.
It's the local "Proposition 8" thing, which is an anti-gay-marriage initiative seeking to amend the California constitution to prevent that (since the State Supreme Court correctly reversed an earlier proposition on the basis of civil-rights discrimination). On my way to the bike path, I see more and more of the "Yes on 8" signs-- one of which is facing the house of two lesbian parents and that makes my blood pressure go up, and others of which now have newly added "Please don't steal or deface our signs" on them. And I support the right to free speech, but it does not seem to occur to those people that if someone wanted to take THEIR rights away, they'd be tempted toward that kind of misbehavior too.

*grump-grump-grump* *is already ranting* :0

We totally share a brain on House this season.

*is sad*
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 30th, 2008 04:16 am (UTC)
That's it exactly-- I'm sad about it. I've loved the show so passionately for its excellent and unconventional writing, but at the same time... if I'm bordering on utterly hating the main character, the 'fun' is gone for me. I can dislike him and still find him intriguing, and so long as he still interests me or makes me laugh or think from time to time, that's good enough. If I reach the point where I'm starting to think extermination would be good... that's very bad. :0

I agree that House has been a major prick this season. I normally enjoy his wicked sense of humour, but he was very cruel last episode. I do love the new team though.

The funeral episode too-- he was so ridiculously difficult all through that, and considering how badly he'd been treating Wilson for awhile then, it really got on my nerves. You don't always have to be the biggest jerk possible. :(

I do like the new team as well, though I still wish oldFakeDoctorGuy had made it into one of the slots. ;)

I signed up for the mini_NaNoWriMo and the NaNoWriMo, and now I'm doing my panicky flail of 'omg what have I done?' but I'm also sorta really excited about it. ^_^ I'm positive that I can do the 100 word minimum a day, but I figured out to reach the NaNoWriMo deadline it takes 1667 words per day.

I think you summed up the major flaw of House this season. House is beign too much of an ass. I'd have to say that I'm missing Chase's screen time as well. We still get loads of Foreman, and the occasional Cameron (although I have to be honest and admit I don't care too much for her character) but outside of the short snips of surgeries there's practically no Chase. *pouts*

I'm sorry to hear that you had a rough night yesterday. *hugs* Those are both pretty interesting dreams, the first sounds oddly analytical and the second sort of surreal.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 30th, 2008 04:39 am (UTC)
Um...um... BOTH?!? Though some people have used the "mini" as their commitment to the minimum they have to write each day (1667 is a whole story for me, sometimes two! Or more!)

House is beign too much of an ass.
I'm no longer occasionally irritated with him this year-- I'm outright angry at him, far too much of the time. It infuriated me that he was such a jerk to Wilson during that road trip (on top of his total inability to be a friend when Wilson needed it). And that he couldn't ever, even for two seconds, be happy for Cuddy (or even pretend to be) made me want to slug him. He didn't used to be quite so extreme for sucn long periods of time.

I'd have to say that I'm missing Chase's screen time as well.
I've always liked Chase, though I was never ga-ga for him. I like his easygoing sense of humor and cleverness. Foreman was my favorite of the three originals, and I've never been able to stand Cameron. Making her blond was the final straw, somehow. :0

Those are both pretty interesting dreams, the first sounds oddly analytical and the second sort of surreal.
THe first was almost logic-by-abstraction, as dreams often are. The second... good lord, that one just kept getting weirder all the time. It was one of those utterly random dreams that keeps shifting direction-- one minute there's an old childhood crush and a neighborhood full of swimming pools and you're literally flying around the room, and the next it's jeeps and camouflage-clothing and people torching trees. W.H.Y.??

It's called "showing, not telling," so perhaps it's the best method of all!

You can do it, it's almost easier to whittle away daily than to commit to 50K (60K???) as a huge chunk. :0
