Supernatural Gen Drabble: "No Saviors But Ourselves" (PG)
Title: No Saviors But Ourselves
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam and Dean (Gen, Drama, Drabble)
Rating: PG
Summary: (Post S2) The "real" drabble on Once Upon A Time for win_non_con.
Author's Notes: Part of the drac_suite booty for the Treasure Hunt, and it also suits the 100_ghosts "Once Upon A Time" challenge. The 'crack' drabble, by comparison, is here.

x-x-x-x-x

Once upon a time, they were unburdened and free. Their dreams were simple—just the four of them together—but their end was simple too.

Fire burned away their past (their future), leaving only grief and impossible questions. The three survivors fled.

They wandered, chasing answers and the solace of vengeance for two decades. Fractured at the end, they found each other briefly before tragedy struck again.

Trading himself for Dean (who later did the same for Sam), John repeated a family legacy he'd never known.

Two are left. If the world burns down, they'll die fighting the flames together.

*nods* The united front for as long as they can hold it. Very Winchester.

Very nicely done.

Very Winchester.
It's always been kind of them against the rest of the world-- whether they were protecting it/themselves or destroying the evil that they found. And they'd hold to it even after everything got hopeless, if it came to that.

So glad you liked this!

It perfectly sums up the story of the Winchesters. Beautiful drabble! <3

Thank you, Shaitanah! What's funny is that there is a crack one of these too, which I'll probably post tomorrow. It's as wrong as this one is right. ;)

Is it your birthday? Hope it was good and filled with hot young men admiring your tight ass. Go cycling! love and cuddles!

It was my birthday yesterday (your two days ago, by now!). Oh man, if only anybody but my husband were actually ogling my ass these days! But there was much loving and cuddling, and chocolate cake as well (but not too much!) :)

Oh, GOD. You are making me cry here. And with nothing new but the way you say it. And oh, how you say it. So heartbreakingly beautiful, like the back of a pulitzer-prize winning novel. Ghaah. I'm thinking of printing this out and carrying it around in my pocket. And if anyone asks me what this show is that I'm so obsessed with, I'll hand it to them smugly and be like, "sounds pretty amazing, doesn't it?"

What a lovely comment! That definitely makes it worth taking two tries on the prompt for win_non_con (the first one was crack)!

I wonder if you would like this story I wrote back in Season One? It's even moreso what you're describing here. It depends on how the poetry of it works for you, but you might like it. :)

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Wow, very powerful last line. Nicely done.

Thank you very much! I think that last part is Sam and Dean in a microcosm, and is a big part of why I love the show.

Oh wow. Well done.

this has kind of a mythological feel.
It was meant to be the warrior-heroes kind of story (rather than the crack one I wrote on the same prompt), so it's great that it comes off that way!

Did you ever read this one that I wrote years ago? It's similar in feel, but more explicitly so, I think.

Beautiful. As always, I'm amazed at the amount of love and story you can get into just 100 words. And Happy Birthday! Was out of town this weekend and missed it.

It's funny sometimes what it takes to work through an idea. I took two stabs at that prompt, and the first one was crack and the second one utterly serious. As if the crack inspired the more noble telling of all the same things. :0

The birthday was wonderful, and thanks for mentioning it!

I love you for your beautiful words. And I want it to be just like this. :-)

Me too-- I want them together, no matter what, and in the end I really want it to be good and not something dark and hopeless. I hope Kripke will be that kind to us.

When I read this, I could totally hear somebody Galadriel-like narrating the intro for a Supernatural movie ...

:))

I love that idea-- that this is the epic summary of who Dean and Sam are and how that all came to be! :)

You just summed up everything so far beautifully.

John repeated a family legacy he'd never known.
My heart still breaks.

If the world burns down, they'll die fighting the flames together.
The best ending ever.

My heart still breaks.
So sad, and yet still no less than what he owed Dean in the end. It's perfect tragedy.

The best ending ever.
I'm hoping will get a "driving off into the sunset/moonlight" kind of ending where there's a hint of happiness, but this is the truth of everything they would do if it came to the worst.

Thanks for your lovely comments!

that, particularly, is very sad.
So interesting to find that out in S4, and yet we all understand exactly why each of those choices was made. It's hard to say that we wouldn't do the same. :(

The whole thing is beautiful but the first line breaks my heart.

It's hard to remember, at this point so late in their lives, that once there was hope for this family-- as much as three of them knew.

There was a time when they had the luxury of innocence and joy. What they've lost... it's so very sad.
