Of Pigs and Lipstick
Some LJ friends and I have been having background discussion about Sarah Palin and her being "likable" to so many people. Does pretty constitute likable? Is that it? Or that plus her folksy manner? Because this woman's politics paint her as Jesse Helms in lipstick and a dress to me. resounding_echo said it best: how "likable" would people find her if she looked like Janet Reno?

As for the male vote, my Texan co-worker sums that up: "She looks like a librarian. A naughty librarian."

Now, if you were looking for a Republican woman as a Veep for the ticket (which is pandering already, in that you've clearly already decided to pick a woman just for political purposes), you'd go with Elizabeth Dole. Highly qualified and intelligent, she's clearly a Presidential choice. But she's an "insider," and she doesn't have the sex appeal of Palin. Being eminently qualified as opposed to entirely UNqualified has suddenly become hugely negative. Voters, how did we get here?

*steps off soap box*

Now, the real reason for this post, before derailing into that rant? To share something I found courtesy of stele_3:
Biden prepares to debate Sarah Palin

Oh god, how I needed that. I can never get enough of the weird! Get out of my secret Christmas place, Sarah Palin!

And if you haven't seen it already, check out the Palin Debate Flowchart in this entry from deirdre_c. \o/

Wasn't that wonderful? God, so bizarre.

"Actual quote?"
"Yep."
"Holy shit."

And the "Get out of my Christmas place" thing, and the 'friendly' grin #1-- Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Helms was an absolutely dreadful man, and Palin's politics are really, really familiar. :(

I believe they picked Palin not only for her gender, but also for her impeccable Conservative (with a capital "C") credentials and life story, in order to do some shoring up of the base and letting McCain off the hook for his less-than-stellar appeal to the far Right. So in that sense, Libby Dole or Kay Bailey Hutchison or Susan Collins or Condi Rice wouldn't do. (Of course, none of them are as twinkly, either.)

Oh, definitely-- they wanted somebody extremely right wing (because god forbid it should just be a sensible Republican candidate instead).

Condi Rice
Another obvious choice, except (and I can't believe I'm saying this), too sensible! The woman can think linearly, and apparently that's bad. :0

Heh. Sadly, I've spent most of the past six or seven weeks trolling a double handful of the liberal blogs, so I caught that on Talking Points Memo the other day. The Friendly Grin. *snerksalot*

(Note: "Sadly" because it means I have no other life!!)

Oh, we know you do-- too much of a life, even!

But it's easy to rat-hole down paths you don't expect, especially if you're curious. For instance, I also checked out the "GoodJoeBiden vs. GaffeJoeBiden IM Texting" link too. :D

Oh my god, that debate training slideshow was freaking HIGHlarious!

I didn't know much about Biden before, but I like him a lot now that I've heard him speak a few times and read about him.

And have you been watching the newer tidbits from Obama? He's getting more forceful, and I love it! I thought he was too nice during the first debate, that he didn't take some clearly presented opportunities to nail McCain. However, it seems that he might have been trying to warm people to him, and get tougher once they started to like him more. In retrospect, I think that's a brilliant strategy. The man is on fire now.

I'm crossing my fingers for your country.

Oh, given how many people are voting on "likable" instead of "Presidential," I hope he's that savvy. Though it irritates the heck out of me that this is what people are basing their votes on these days!

Those slides, though-- hahahaha! Fantastic presentation, and you've got to love the crack touches like the Christmas tree thing. :D
