Beta Begging and other ramblings
First off, I need a beta with excellent grammatical skills and possible idea-flailing for my kamikazeremix fic. I started it last night (I can hear PT and GGJ cringing already), but much as I'd rather write this one in present-tense the original fic is in past-tense and that means pain over past-tense-as-present and distant-past-tense-as-past. Are you that skilled? Can you help? *is hopeful*

While on vacation, I stopped by a cat shelter in Oregon City with my daughter and niece. It's where my sister got one of her two kittens, and it has the cats/kittens all roaming free for petting. I thought I knew what "short-haired" meant for cats, but there was a gorgeous black cat there with fur like deep-pile velvet. Seriously, 1/4" long at most! Never seen that before- I've had the short-haired cats with poofy fluff (Tigger), thick & glossy fur (The Whale), and bunny fur (dear-departed Thor). Ultra-short fur would do wonders for HalfshellHusband's allergies.

Speaking of cats... The Whale is now on a diet, after Lauren came home and weighed him in at 22 lbs. (previously only slightly chubby at 19.5 lbs). The kids took to heart the story of when HSH and I went to the coast for 3 days years ago and left Thor in the garage with a full tank of food. We told George's sister the cat would be fine (hey, if he ate all his food in the first few days that'd be his problem). But she checked on him anyway, and did what we feared: "Poor kitty, you're out of food! Let me get you some more." When we got back, the tank was empty again, the litter box was full, and Thor's head was fat. :0

Work has been maximum flail, hence no real posts after the teal deer extravaganza on Sunday. You're probably not sorry. ;)

Awwww, poor whale :)

:D He's like so many neutered male cats-- he goes back to the food dish again and again all day long. No off switch! And we always seem to have a female cat at the same time who's a micro-nibbler and probably needs the food-dish out all day.

Lauren's solution in part is to make him go outside for a minimum of four hours of "exercise," during which he's probably loafing in the sun instead of loafing on the sofa. ;) But otherwise, with HSH home all day, that cat can easily beach himself on the sofa for the entire day (and get at the food dish if we don't put it on the counter and cover the opening with a Kleenex box. Seriously, the cat is a piggy!)

and she ended up developing a strategy of eating so fast she regularly got hiccups, so he didn't steal all her food.
It's endemic, I swear. Male cats are piggies!

One of my least-favorite food-related behaviors for cats is
*spew-barf*
*oh hey, I'm hungry now*

As if they're getting another crack at the food dish after that!

I'm here if you need me.
*giggles*

Okay I'm just kidding but I couldn't help myself. That is just so not me that I couldn't resist raising my hand and having a laugh at my expense.

At least I still got my sense of humor :o)

Hee! I still have posted at my desk the Dilbert cartoon of the boss and tech writer, with "Let's start with the words that aren't words" and ends with "Why do I even try to moralify these people." In my memory, that last part is "motify," which is equally horrific. It never gets old!

At least I still got my sense of humor :o)
I skimmed past a post that indicated some pain-related problems that aren't 100% yet, and I hope that doesn't last. :( Maybe reruns of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report will cure you.

Hey there! It's wonderful to have you back! *hugs*

Have you found a beta yet? I've been really busy the last few weeks with apartment and roommate and medical stuff, but I've got a bit of time now, maybe. When is your fic due? How long is it? I'm quite good with tense, as I'm extremely sensitive to it. Furthermore, I write in past tense, so that might help.

Let me know if I can help. :)

*Flails* Yes-yes-yes.

My husband can beta as well (English major, and quite the reader), but he's less familiar with the subtleties of some of the fandom characters or the nature of fanfic. So while I'd get the grammar from him, everything else might get lesser treatment.

Ummmm... fic is due Monday, still madly finishing it up. At almost midnight my time, while Lauren's slumber party rages in the background. Should have it done sometime tomorrow. *bites nails*

Will you be around?
Deadbeat Nymph: sammydeadbeat_nymph on August 24th, 2008 07:09 am (UTC)
So you have until the end of Monday? If so, I think we can work it out. I actually have another beta job for tomorrow, but I need to finish it earlier in the day. Tomorrow late afternoon/evening would work for me. (For the record, I'm in GMT -5, which will work to our benefit.)

How do you like to do it? I have my own system, but please let me know exactly what you'd like; I'm flexible. Also, could you send me the link to the fic that you're remixing (if you think that it's necessary for me to read it)?
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on August 24th, 2008 08:13 am (UTC)
I'll do all of this via email tomorrow, and what I'll do is have you read the remix first to see if it holds together (or *koff* mostly) as an independent story, and then read the original afterward.

It's due late Monday, but I definitely don't want to go down to the final seconds. *ulp* Although that's what the writing feels like right now. Oy, what a challenge. :0

Hey there. I just wanted to check in and let you know I'm around. I finished the other beta that I had to do, and while there are some other things I'll have to do periodically, I'll be around for most of the day and evening. :)

Struggling to write faster, but it's still not done. :0

Hey darlin'. I probably should have answered earlier, if for no other reason than to give you encouragement. But I know you can do it, so it didn't seem necessary. :P

I'm back and forth from the comp. Feel free to email whenever you like; I will respond as soon as I can.

As for time-lines, I'm three hours ahead of you, which could work against us if you don't finish until late, but it would work in our favour tomorrow morning. :)

I'm just making supper now, and then I'm going to eat, but I'll be around. *hugs*
