Supernatural Gen Drabble: Modern-Day Alchemy (PG)
Title: Modern-Day Alchemy
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Dean (Gen, Drabble)
Rating: PG
Summary: (Pre-Series) More than just a pretty face, and don't you ever forget it…
Disclaimer: 1) Neither Supernatural nor its characters belong to me. 2) Method not guaranteed in actual use.
Author's Notes: Happy belated birthday to kronette! You asked for a Dean drabble on an accomplishment that was for Dean alone, and I hope this is to your liking. :)
Also for the supernatural100 challenge on "Exhilaration."

x-x-x-x-x

It cost two bucks at Goodwill, a total bargain. It didn't need to actually work—Dean didn't want it for music anyway.

Battery-operated, portable, basic circuitry—just needed the "record" function for input, plus rewiring and a display.

And time with a soldering iron and spare parts…

Three months he hauled it around, until they visited Dad's electrician friend in Richmond. Dean tinkered in the garage for days—nothing, uh-oh, almost—before braving a trial run at the cemetery.

Paydirt on the Latham and Montgomery tombs, silence on the gravestones and the rest.

Yes— finally!

If only Sam could see…

AAAWWW!!! *claps*

I LOVE the look on Dean's face when he says 'I made it. It's homemade.' And I always want to kick Sam for being like 'yeah, and?'

*smishes Dean*

Great drabble!

Exactly! Homemade EMF meter-- and out of a Walkman no less. It's not like that's easy, plus it works! And I have the same feeling about Sam-- he deserved a punch in the arm for crushing Dean's glee like that.

Glad you liked the drabble-- thank you!

Aw thats really sweet! Deans pride in himself is really great to read.

Thank you! It's nice to write, too-- a moment where he's done something that is personally his, done it well, and he knows it. :D

I think I love kronette for requesting this. And, of course, you for writing it.

Dean's definitely one of the sharpest knives in the drawer. He has been, for a long time, showcased by the EMF-meter and the sawed off shotgun in Bad Day at Black Rock. I wish (fanfic) writers would remember it...

This delights with the Dean's pride in his own work, in the silent desire to see if his idea will hold water. In the elation of it all.

Thank you.

I agree with the (fanfic) aspect above, because I get frustrated when the show's writers make him dumb as well. He's smart and he's clever, and "book smart" isn't the only kind of intelligence.

in the silent desire to see if his idea will hold water.
And in the end, it does! \o/

He deserved to be proud over this one, and it will never stop being awesome to me. :D

Thanks for your comments, as always. ♥

Awwwwwwwwwww! Dean. I can see his gleeful, almost little-boy grin when it worked. And then I kind of want to kick Sam in the shin for his moment of scoff.

Me too-- it was in the original ending, even, before it got trimmed).

And then I kind of want to kick Sam in the shin for his moment of scoff.
Exactly. So mean, and so wrong. :(

Thank you!

What a great thing for Dean to make, and it's really useful in what they do.

I appreciate you putting a positive spin on a sore subject for me; Sam negating Dean's accomplishment in making the EMF reader all by himself has always stuck in my craw. ::bops Sam
on the head::

I know exactly what you mean. Dean deserved some celebration of that awesome achievement, not the "Whatever. *sneer*" he got from Sam. :0

Re: well done!
no, you gotta be smarter in EVERYTHING or at least pretend to...

Exactly! How many people could make an EMF meter (of all things) out of a Walkman themselves? That's awesome!

And deserves a "Wow" and not a putdown. *binks Sam in the head*

i do believe this icon comes from the "it's homemade!" bit.... hee. i love it when dean improvises like that.

I'm a big fan of improvisation in general, and Dean went way above and beyond with that personal creation.

Go Dean! \o/

Season One is SO much fun. And the pre-season implications that stem from it. :D

Glad you liked it-- thank you!

Yay!!! I so loved that Dean made an EMF meter himself, and wanted to slap Sam on the back of the head for his unenthusiastic response. If Dean only knew how brilliant his fangirls think he is ;)

I think probably everyone in the viewing audience felt that way, with Dean being so proud of it and Sam acting like it was garbage. :(

If Dean only knew how brilliant his fangirls think he is ;)

And the unfairness is that it's John and Sam's opinions he cares about most. At least WE have more sense. ;)

Nicely done! I like the ending, how there's that sense of triumph, followed by the longing for Sam to see it. It makes that moment in "Phantom Traveler" especially bittersweet. *hugs Dean*

It makes that moment in "Phantom Traveler" especially bittersweet.

I know-- Dean deserved a much better reaction from Sam to that piece of homemade genius! An EMF meter isn't exactly an off-the-shelf item, after all.

This is great! I thought that EMF meter was really clever. I agree, Sam deserved a kick in the shin for his distain. What, did he think Dean and his Dad had the money for the spiffy things that the Ghosthunters use? - Assuming those even work.

Wonderful! Thank you!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on July 19th, 2008 12:37 am (UTC)
I thought that EMF meter was really clever.

Me too-- I was surprised to see the Ghostfacers with a manufactured version of their own, because where would you buy one? Who sells that?

The fact that Dean made something you can't order from OSH or Home Depot, and that it worked, was all kinds of impressive. *kicks Sam again*

Thanks for reading!
redrikkiredrikki on July 19th, 2008 01:33 am (UTC)
Very nice. Sam may sneer, but it takes mad skills to make a working EMF meter out of a broken walkman.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on July 19th, 2008 02:18 am (UTC)
Exactly-- making an EMF meter to begin with is amazing enough, but misusing a Walkman for it? Genius!

:D

Everything he did, he did it for Sam, from the smallest thing to selling his soul ...
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Diner Deanhalfshellvenus on July 19th, 2008 07:15 am (UTC)
This one was his own project, but in the end who he wanted to celebrate his success with... *sigh*

Such a simple thing to want, and so often denied.

Aw, Dean. *pinches his little cheeks*

YES! CLEVER DEAN! (*joins in the kicking Sam's shin bandwagon* I felt a little jolt of hate when hes was all "Yeah I can SEE that..")

Sam probably doesn't have a leg to stand on anymore, but it's his own fault. ;)

I felt a little jolt of hate when he was all "Yeah I can SEE that.."
Yes-- that is NOT the response to "It's homemade" when the thing in question is something so unusual and difficult to do. I think the word Sam was looking for there was "Awesome" instead. :D
