Supernatural100 "Candy" Drabble Challenge: Displacement
Author: HalfshellVenus
Category: Sam & Dean (Genfic, drabble)
Rating: PG

Author’s Notes: Written for the supernatural100 “Candy” challenge. A twisty take on that theme.

x-x-x-x-x

After the messiest of jobs, the air itself has flavor.

Blood, fire, gunpowder, and acid—they reek and climb and cling inside the soul.

Years ago, Sam turned to peppermints to cover up the memories. He keeps them in the car, always ready on the return.

The taste that makes things better is the taste that makes him sick, if it’s casual or isolated from its purpose. It brings horror and destruction, and the taint of darker knowledge.

Every Christmas, Sam forgets this when the Candy Canes appear... but one bite does him in.

He should have chosen cinnamon instead.

A love this! The meter is so lyrical - a perfect poem. I'm kind of in awe!!!

Thank you! My god, an actual comment on the drabble instead of JensenHotness vs. everybody else. :-)

Want to try your hand at drabbles? I could use the company on supernatural100 :-0

LOL! Time and place for everything. I just loved the flow of these two lines: "After the messiest of jobs, the air itself has flavor. He should have chosen cinnamon instead." The cadence makes them perfect bookends. I am the Trusty Sidekick Geek-girl when it comes to stuff like that! *G* I have never tried a drabble, but to be honest, after reading yours, I thought I would love to try. Yours would be the standard to compare to! I might give it a whirl - would you be interested in beta-ing?

the Trusty Sidekick Geek-girl

I loved that phrasing on the show. Nothing wrong with Geek-boys and Geek-girls! Sometimes, we're the ones who grow up to be employed!

I like that you noticed the poetic flow, but that I didn't. When I notice it, the drabble is usually going wrong. Haven't had that problem in awhile, thank goodness, but it used to plague me. I re-wrote "And So He Waits" 3 major times to kill off the meter, because it was ruining the story :-(

Plz, try your hand! I would be happy to beta. And there is a new challenge every week over at supernatural100, which obviously I haven't been able to resist. I've done all so far except the "Route 66" challenge way back, and I still debate whether to write a late entry :-0

"Nothing wrong with Geek-boys and Geek-girls! Sometimes, we're the ones who grow up to be employed!" So true (and thank goodness!!)

It's even better that you didn't notice the flow. When it's unplanned, it's even sweeter (heh - a little candy pun). Just shows you have the soul of a poet, no matter what you're writing. :)

I have finally written - well, it's actually a triple drabble. 300 on the nose. It will take me some time to pare down to 100, I think! I'm just too wordy. But if you would like to take a look, I'd love for you to beta. Do you have an email I can send to?

Yes, I'm at catwoman_purrs at sbcglobal.net

Going from 300 to 100 is hard. For the supernatural100 "Pets" drabble I had to do two takes. The first one I just could not get down farther than a double-drabble of 200 words. The second one wound up being a completely different drabble.

Nothing wrong with the bigger drabbles, except that they have to be exactly 100 for that community.

Send it on over! I'll get to it tonight or tomorrow. Right now, I'm going offline for a bit to work on some writing during "Beauty and the Geek." :-)
