Prison Break Slash Fiction: Beyond This Fading Existence (PG-13)
Title: Beyond This Fading Existence
Author: HalfshellVenus
Pairing: Michael/Lincoln (Slash)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: (An interlude in "The Arrangement" series): Michael lights a long-forgotten fire inside Lincoln.
Author's Notes: Happy birthday to happywriter06! I hope you like this little offering.
A 60_minute_fics project, also for my fanfic100 Michael/Lincoln challenge, this is "Taste"— and not at all how I thought I'd be writing this prompt.

x-x-x-x-x

In Fox River, where the days taste like death and the air like ash, Lincoln finds the one thing that tastes of life:

Michael.

It's not the promise of escape that makes the difference—for who can promise the impossible and really mean it? It isn't that.

It's not the spark that comes from stepping over old taboos, or the feeling that someone sees him, someone's listening. Lincoln's too tired for any of that to matter.

That Michael loves him reaches down inside his sleepwalking soul. Lincoln knew that, always— though not the type or depth of love (or maybe he did and chose to ignore it). Michael loving him isn't the key.

What matters is the opposite instead: Michael caring whether Lincoln loves him back.

Other people care, Lincoln knows. Veronica, hot and cold over the years and engaged to another man now, she wants forgiveness to settle between them. LJ, of course, but Lincoln's love is nearly useless—it doesn't bring security or assurances, and soon enough it'll end in death.

All Michael wants—only hopes for, never demands—is for Lincoln to love him on that deeper, more intimate level. Trapped in prison, it's one of the few things Lincoln can still do.

Michael tastes like life, because kissing him brings the essence of living back to the lost world of Lincoln's boxed-in, measured-out days.

The taste is exhilarating, unstoppable.

It's enough to make a man believe that anything is possible.

Thank you! It's been awhile since I wrote any slash in the prison setting, and I've kind of missed it. Especially something abstract like the reawakening of lost hope. :)

Amazing! I can totally see Michael affecting someone (especially Lincoln) this way. =))

(especially Lincoln)
It would be such a revelation to be surrounded by your own imminent death, and to have someone jolt you out of that.

All of Michael's plans and love have the same message: it isn't over yet...

You know, I haven't been reading Michael/Lincoln for a while now. Not as an official stance; I just haven't been.

But this? This reminds me of all the things I love about the pairing. The angst, the desperation, the need, the direness, the love.

Thank you.

Me either. I'm more caught up in SPN these days, and canon's been so all over the place.

The angst, the desperation, the need, the direness, the love.
It's what I SO MISS about Season One. The desperation of so little time being left and so much still to be done and felt and communicated while the chance is still there. There was always the chance, back then, that one or both of them might not make it out of Fox River after all; we just couldn't be sure.

I'm glad this re-awakened some M/L love for you, and I certainly needed it myself. *sigh*

Gorgeous fic my dear lady!

What shall we do if the brothers end up lost in the shuffle as it all comes to an end. :o(

We'll turn to you for more fic, that's what we'll do ;o)

That's my fear entirely-- that the show won't really be about Michael and Lincoln (as it really hasn't been since Season One).

I keep waiting for more Michael and Lincoln and instead getting less of it all the time-- all the whys and whens as unscripted as ever, these days.

Hope this perked you up a bit, though, as to why our love was so huge for it all in Season One! Yes-- never let S1 go!

I keep meaning to finish the "Always" series, but it really seems people have lost interest in it and the show just got so fractured at the end of Season One. Writing in/around canon became a huge headache.

The setting for this story, though, reminds me of why I loved it so way back when. So much love, so much mystery regarding whether love and luck would be enough to save one or both of the brothers. *happy sigh* Good times. :)

FABulous. Now that the show's PTB have messed up the canon, it's nice we can go to your stuff for good storytelling. Thanks a ton,

Oh, heavens yes! *drives stake through the producers' idiotic money-grubbing little hearts*

it's nice we can go to your stuff for good storytelling.
I hope to keep the boys alive as real characters for as long as possible, both Slash and Gen. They're why I followed this fandom in the first place, and finally made the leap into writing for myself. :)

It's a beautiful ficlet, I really enjoyed it (and on a side note, loved the settings - I think season 1 stories will never grow old on me). Thanks for sharing.

Nor for me either-- it was a whole different show back then, and that was the show I loved. All of the interesting characters and the drama between them. I really miss that.

So glad you liked this, despite the shortness. I'd been thinking for ages that "Taste" would be a sensual extravaganza when I got around to writing it, but instead it was more about emotions and transformation. So unpredictable!

Thank you so much.

I love the transformation of Lincoln from unbeliever into someone willing to try to live again. That theme is just irresistible to me, because it's ingrained in his nature NOT to hope or believe. He learned his disappointments early, and they changed who he became.

I hope this brought a little Prison Break happiness into your birthday, and some love for Season One all over again. Many happy returns to you! \o/

Hee-- that's quite a range of responses. I like the >=) in the middle of it all, too. :D

Ah, the prison days. How I miss them! And I used to struggle with how confining they were, but at least they offered inspiration. :)
etherealflaimetherealflaim on April 20th, 2008 09:22 pm (UTC)
Some things are just so much more easily expressed in smileys =D

I'm rather enjoying the freedom to do anything anywhere anytime that is offered by writing fic that could potentially be the new season, taking place (a) outside of prison (MAYBE! Who knows?) and (b) a good distance into the future. You almost have to decide where you want the characters to be and then you can extrapolate backward to figure out how they got there. It's definitely an interesting change. If you ever get the time, you should check out my Fair Play miniseries, which is an attempt at writing the start of season 4.

Michael breathes hope.
Michael exudes life.
When death is a constant companion.
How could Lincoln not believe?

More so Michael wants/needs/loves/obesses Lincoln.
Michael is so incapable of forcing his needs on the ones he loves. He'll beg, he'll plead, he'll reason but force the ones he loves never.

It's that that makes us love Michael. That is why we excuse his manipulations. That even for his own ends while in the game he really is true. His ability to deliver greatness, to create, to see what is not seen.

When you have nothing left how could Lincoln not believe. It is this that is Michael's true gift to Lincoln. The ability to show Lincoln that he is still important, that his love is not all poisonous, that he is capable of giving something selfless. Even if the only time he could do it the circumstances are so dire. He can still learn and give his love.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: PB slashhalfshellvenus on April 20th, 2008 08:05 pm (UTC)
It's that that makes us love Michael. That is why we excuse his manipulations.
Oh yes-- I remember that moment of heartbreak in S2 when Lincoln was leaving him to go back after LJ, and as utterly destroyed by it as Michael was, he didn't try to manipulate Lincoln into not doing it.

And back in Fox River, all he wanted was for Lincoln to believe, to help himself be rescued. Which was no small thing at the time, not at all.

The ability to show Lincoln that he is still important, that his love is not all poisonous, that he is capable of giving something selfless.
I like that description of Lincoln feeling that his love is poisonous, because he feels he's destroyed everyone around him with who he is. But the deeper truth is that he would have far less effect on them if they did not love him in return, and so his love in effect IS poisonous.
tyricaltyrical on April 21st, 2008 03:29 am (UTC)
I disagree! His love is not poisonous. I think the decisions he makes in regards to those he loves is what is poisonous. It's the fact that he chooses to put his self firsts above all things except in certain instances... the money he borrowed for Michael to have a better life. It's those acts those decisions that are poisonous. His love I believe like Michael's is true but what he decides to do well ...
chanchito_z on April 11th, 2008 03:00 am (UTC)
I really like the idea that the hope that Michael brings to Lincoln in Fox River is more than one for escape - but for life, and that he does it, not with a crazy plan, but with his love. I think in essence this has to be the truer interpretation of what Linc thought about Michael’s plan. There’s lots of ways to look at that (and I do) but I like this one best -where Linc understands Mike’s main plan is to be with him and love him and secondary is an escape. Very very lovely.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: PB slashhalfshellvenus on April 20th, 2008 08:08 pm (UTC)
is more than one for escape - but for life
Much of what we see in canon is exactly that-- the need to revive Lincoln's will to live to the point where Lincoln will aid in his own rescue rather than sabotage it with apathy.

where Linc understands Mike’s main plan is to be with him and love him and secondary is an escape.
Yes, yes! Oh, Season One, how I miss it! I miss the emotion of it all, the bringing forth of hope not only in the plan but hope for life and in Lincoln's case, hope also for himself. ♥

Thank you! This is one of the shorter stories I've written for Prison Break in ages, so they ARE usually longer than this. :)

I'm late...of course!

But I loved this so much!

That Michael loves him reaches down inside his sleepwalking soul.

And I loved that line most of all among the many wonderfully constructed and interpreted thoughts!

Up to your usual very high standard, sweetheart!

I find myself drawn to that period in Lincoln's life, when he was already emotionally dead in preparation for his execution. The idea of Michael (and his love) breaking through that and making Lincoln want to keep on living has endless appeal. :)

Thanks so much for reading, Marilyn! :)

The brothers were and still are the main reason I watched/watch Prison Break so this has enormous appeal to me too. Bugger the romances; the show was and still should be about family!

And thank you, dear.
