Supernatural Gen Drabble: Hope As Rundown As This Road (PG)
Title: Hope As Rundown As This Road
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam and Dean (Gen)
Rating: PG
Summary: Season 3, and all Dean's choices are running out.
Author's Notes: For the "Star Motel" challenge at 100_ghosts, and for tsuki_no_bara just because.

x-x-x-x-x

Seems like they've been on this lonely stretch of road all day, though it's only five when Desert Flats shows up ahead. It's a sorry-ass excuse for a town, one combination gas-station/general-store, and the godforsaken Star Motel.

If the map showed anything closer than two hundred miles, they wouldn't stop. But Dean hasn't slept much lately, and he's whipped. This dump is it.

The beds sag toward the middle, but the AC in the other unit was broken.

"Shower?" Sam offers.

"Yeah. If it works."

One month left.

Dean promises himself his final motel won't be anything like this one…

Also, ow. Dean, make Sam spring for the Hilton or something, kay? Kay.

*pets Dean*

I want it never to come to that final night, though I can almost guarantee Kripke's going to pull us through that wringer. :(

Such a sense of weariness in only a few sentences. Poor Dean :(

God, imagine your time were running out like his and you took a good look around and saw that this was your life-- and how you were spending the last parts of it you had left.

It exhausts me just thinking about it. *sigh*

Dean promises himself his final motel won't be anything like this one…

Oh, Dean.

It won't be! It'll be a really nice motel, and you'll be old and gray and have lived a full life and be really happy with lots of family and ... and ...

*hugs him*

Nicely done.

I'd just settle for him making it to gray with Sam still along for the ride, and eventually not living in the continual path of danger. Some time for reward and contentment. *crosses fingers*

Dean deserves the Bellagio!

And some magic means of reprieve! Which I hope will not wait until some time in Season 4 (after killing the viewers dead with the soul-killing angst on a S3 cliffhanger. Which you know Kripke would do to us). :0

I feel so tired for him, thinking of his last weeks being spent in places like this. *sigh*

(you wrote it for me? *smish* thank you. ^_^ )
Yup! Consider it an extremely late birthday present, if you like. :) Given how much you like drabbles, I really thought you deserved one of your very own. :)

OW, real punch at the end there.

There are times the boys' life depressed me already, but when you look at it in late S3 context... ouch. That can't be the way to spend what little time you've got. :(

*cries* Agh, I'm not going to have any fingernails left by the time the finale finally gets here. AGH! Lovely drabble though. :)

Oh, do I know that feeling! I'm getting that "pit-in-my-stomach' feeling as the season goes on, and I'm very much afraid of being cliffhangered over something really awful at the end of the season. *is nervous*

I don't want to spend the summer in a funk as I have the last two, you know?

The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Diner Deanhalfshellvenus on March 30th, 2008 08:32 pm (UTC)
He deserves so much more...
If only because he made the choice he did for Sam without any looking back.

The punishment he faces for that, given how Sam came to be dead in the first place, is unfair in the most universal sense. :(

No, that's dirt. They're not glassy through tears.

Last line is a killer.

What hurts so much about this is how often this is probably the kind of place they wind up in. Poor babies.

What hurts so much about this is how often this is probably the kind of place they wind up in.

I imagine that's true. And it's when you've got a deadline on your life that you tend to stand back and suddenly see, "This is how I'm living my life. And have been, for years." And god, is that ever depressing. *angsts*

Man, I hardly know what to say, past the wibble. Oh, boys .... *sighhh* I just wanna hug 'em both.

And get 'em a nice room with flat screen TV and fancy ergonomic mattresses and a fully stocked mini bar. *sighhh*

What a life, huh? When the thrill of the hunt is gone, and you know there isn't a lot of time left to make up for just endless years spent chasing the next job from state-to-state... it looks pretty damn bleak, doesn't it?

*sighs*

Oh, Dean. They should do something besides hunt right up to the last minute. Dean deserves better and so does Sammy.

They should do something besides hunt right up to the last minute. Dean deserves better and so does Sammy.
I keep thinking that too, but then what if it wound up being joyless-- if it couldn't stand up to how much meaning they were trying to pile on top of it? And in the end, Sam would want to be finding that magic sequence or action that will break Dean's deal anyway, and Dean will just want to be doing anything that keeps his mind off of what's coming.

I think these last few episodes of the Season are going to just about kill all of us. *wibble*

Thank you! I wanted to get the reader feeling as exhausted as Dean by the time it becomes clear what's really wearing him down underneath it all.

And boy, how this season has been killing us by inches with Dean's fate waiting to be decided. *wibbles*

Oh Dean.

Like he has given up all hope.
God, you can feel why he would, too. I'll be Kripke's going to torture us to the finish on this one, so Dean will go all the way down to the wire on it. And what happens after that is anyone's guess. *is worried*
