Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Dean and Sam (Gen, Angst)
Rating: PG-13 (language)
Summary: S3 drabble on time running out.

In Abilene, Dean lies in the dark and counts the days left.

Sixty-seven now— today spent on driving and a truckstop beer. Tomorrow will be demon possessions and research, and please no fights with Sammy—there's been too much fighting lately, both of them tense and scared and no closer to finding an escape.

Dean can hear Sam's sleep-heavy breathing, a sound he's listened to nearly every night of his life. Those horrible hours where there was no breath, no Sam were what drove Dean to the choice that'll claim him soon.

Fuck the consequences—he'd do it all again.

Oh Karen, this is fantastic!!

And you have tapped right into the pure essence that IS Dean, and one of the reasons why I am so firmly ensconced at Camp!Dean. *fangirl sigh*

Those horrible hours where there was no breath, no Sam were what drove Dean to the choice that'll claim him soon.

I rewatched that episode the other day and marvelled, again, at Dean's unflinching resolve to do what he had to. For him, there was no choice. How can you not love that?

And that last line? Perfect. So true and so very Dean.

Thankyou so much for writing this - I loved it! :)

He's by far the most interesting character to me, because under all that surface this is what drives him.

And it wasn't just that he couldn't live without Sam, but more that he felt the universe would be wronged if he lived and Sam didn't. Even though I think he was too hard on himself, I understand why he felt that.

Yay! I'd hoped so. Glad to make your birthday just that much more special. ♥
