Supernatural Gen Drabble: As Night Slowly Becomes Tomorrow (Angst)
Title: As Night Slowly Becomes Tomorrow
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Dean and Sam (Gen, Angst)
Rating: PG-13 (language)
Summary: S3 drabble on time running out.
Author's Notes: Happy late birthday to sierra_foxx, who wanted a Dean drabble along these lines. I'm glad you had such a good birthday!
Also for supernatural100's "Insomnia" challenge.

x-x-x-x-x

In Abilene, Dean lies in the dark and counts the days left.

Sixty-seven now— today spent on driving and a truckstop beer. Tomorrow will be demon possessions and research, and please no fights with Sammy—there's been too much fighting lately, both of them tense and scared and no closer to finding an escape.

Dean can hear Sam's sleep-heavy breathing, a sound he's listened to nearly every night of his life. Those horrible hours where there was no breath, no Sam were what drove Dean to the choice that'll claim him soon.

Fuck the consequences—he'd do it all again.

that's such a dean drabble, that even selling his soul is worth it if it means his brother gets to live. *snif*

that even selling his soul is worth it if it means his brother gets to live.
It is-- half stubbornness, and half the belief that he truly made the right choice. *cries*

God, I wish I saw season 3))))

Internet downloads! It's so much better than waiting.

This is so very Dean.
Thank you! This is how he kills us, piece by piece... *sigh*

A perfect Oh Dean! moment. (I doubt Sam is really sleeping. He's faking it to try to reassure Dean that All Is Well.)

Every bit as anxious and sleepless as Dean. *sniffle*

I *love* that line. Beautifully written!

It's raw, but it's so Dean. Even knowing what's coming, he'd still make that choice. *wibble*

This drabble made me want to hug Dean for eleventy billion hours. Very nicely done, quiet and aching and angsty.

Favorite lines:

Dean can hear Sam's sleep-heavy breathing,

I like that description.

Fuck the consequences—he'd do it all again.

He absolutely would.

Oh, Dean.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Diner Deanhalfshellvenus on March 4th, 2008 07:47 pm (UTC)
He absolutely would.
He'll never be able to forget what it was like, having Sam dead. Anything is worth it to undo that, in his mind. *cries*

Oh Dean! This feels exactly like what might be going on in Dean's mind late at night when there's nothing to distract him from how little time he has left.

Fuck the consequences—he'd do it all again.

Pure Dean. When it's about Sam there's really no choices.

late at night when there's nothing to distract him from how little time he has left.
Oh, can you imagine that hanging over your head night after night? Because it's not just dying-- there's something much, much worse waiting for him.

When it's about Sam there's really no choices.
It absolutely kills me that Dean would still do it all over again, because he would. No question about it. *sniffle*

Oh Karen, this is fantastic!!

And you have tapped right into the pure essence that IS Dean, and one of the reasons why I am so firmly ensconced at Camp!Dean. *fangirl sigh*

Those horrible hours where there was no breath, no Sam were what drove Dean to the choice that'll claim him soon.

I rewatched that episode the other day and marvelled, again, at Dean's unflinching resolve to do what he had to. For him, there was no choice. How can you not love that?

And that last line? Perfect. So true and so very Dean.

Thankyou so much for writing this - I loved it! :)

He's by far the most interesting character to me, because under all that surface this is what drives him.

at Dean's unflinching resolve to do what he had to. For him, there was no choice. How can you not love that?
And it wasn't just that he couldn't live without Sam, but more that he felt the universe would be wronged if he lived and Sam didn't. Even though I think he was too hard on himself, I understand why he felt that.

Thankyou so much for writing this - I loved it! :)
Yay! I'd hoped so. Glad to make your birthday just that much more special. ♥

Oh, man. Oh, this is 100% pure, undiluted, copper-jacketed, gold-plated, absolute Dean. When all is said and done, no matter his fears ... he loves Sam more than he fears Hell. For him, there simply was - and is - no other choice to make.

*clings*

Awww poor Dean! Just the fact that he's thinking about Sam instead of what's waiting for him. Thanks for sharing.

Just the fact that he's thinking about Sam instead of what's waiting for him.

It was still worth it, in his mind, and he won't ever think differently. And that just about kills me. *cries*

Dean...*cries*

As always few words but very very meaningful.

I so ache for the choice he made, in part because I just can't see him NOT making it. *sniffle*

God, that awful reality where the silence from Sam was louder than any noise in the room... *angsts*

Dean never had a chance. :(

He's damn near close to dead ain't he.
That's our Dean if its for his brother, his family, nothing is out of bounds.

So completely true-- and the easiest sacrifice is of himself. :(

Fuck the consequences--he'd do it all again.

That line, right there, is pure power. It hits you deep down in the gut, because you just know that Dean is like a lost little boy inside, scared of the proverbial monster(s) in the closet--only this time, the monsters are real, and they're coming for him. And I feel for Sammy too, because Dean isn't the only one who's being slowly driven to despair.

It says everything about Dean to me that as scared as he is of what's coming, the idea of him living while Sam was dead was unimaginably worse.

He'd still make that choice again even now.
