Supernatural Gen Drabble: At The Edge Of Forever (Post-S3 "Mystery Spot")
Title: At The Edge Of Forever
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam and Dean (Gen, Angst)
Rating: PG
Summary: Post S3 "Mystery Spot" drabble on "Break."
Author's Notes: Happy Birthday, dotfic! I hope this angst little drabble fills another corner of your SPN love on your special day. :)

x-x-x-x-x

Three days ago, Sam was dealing. Three days ago (or however you measure them— it's hard to keep track after an eternity of Tuesdays and that infinite first Wednesday) he still had time.

He doesn't remember Sunday or Monday that well, the details buried in a lifetime of heartache.

But they were better than this, than knowing how it'll be if he doesn't save Dean. Sam lived it once (sleepwalked through it with a heart of stone and vengeance), but once is all he's good for.

He'll take everyone and everything down with him to keep from living that again.

Very, very nice. The angst is palpable here. *hugs Sam*

Favorite lines:

sleepwalked through it with a heart of stone and vengeance

Ooh, I really like this description!

He'll take everyone and everything down with him to keep from living that again.

Wonderfully gritty last line. Also? Sam's very hot when he's this determined to save Dean. Yum.

The post-Dean Sam we saw was so chilling, and SO realistic.

HeroSam is totally hot. Though I do have a weakness for CoffeeHouse Sam too. :)

The scary thing is if the writes do follo through with how Sam was in Mystery Spot, he would take everything down. That would be one scary Sam!

he would take everything down.
Exactly! Given what we saw of Sam with Dean gone-- which was a reflection of how damn HARD that was for Sam-- imagine having lived it what he'll do now to keep that from coming true. *angsts*

Re: and he might just do that...
! You found a way to make the angst even moreso!

Let us hope it never comes to that. *worried sigh*

After having lived it-- every awful day of it-- I think he would do absolutely everything to keep it from happening. No matter the cost. *shivers*

If I quoted all my favorite lines, I'd repeat the whole thing back to you. I'm always amazed at how much story and emotion good writers like you can put into so few words. But that last line? it's my absolute favorite, cause it's the truth.

Oh god, yes. Funny, esorlehcar just mentioned something similar in her journal, i.e., that Sam would burn the world down if it meant saving Dean.

And he really would. *sniffles*

This is so Sam.
Oh, the dark, stark view of Sam we got in this episode was chilling, but everything we'd expect from a man turned bitter and brokenhearted by losing everything he truly loved.

I have to wonder about the Trickster... did he really think he was teaching Sam to give up? Or instead, since he relented and gave Dean back, did he realize that having lived through the agony of really losing Dean Sam would take the world down with him before he'd let that happen again? Was the lesson instead to make Sam try even harder? We may never really know.

Awesome.

The last line is so intense.

Oh, after seeing what Sam became when Dean was really gone... I have no doubt that he'd destroy everything in his path before he'd let that actually become true again. *angsts*

Oh, poor Sam. MS gave him a taste of what it'd be like without Dean and it is too much to bear -- you really captured his desperation here, the new sense of urgency MS gave him.

Thank you so much, I love this! :D

Yes-- whether the Trickster intended it or not, I think he actually made Sam all the more determined not to go through that again. If he was desperate before, he is infinitely moreso now.

I'm sorry it's angsty, but it's emotion-packed and a drabble, and I'd hoped all that would work some magic for you as a birthday present. Hope your day was lovely. :)

And how awesome it is to know that from now on, that is going to be CANON!!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Samhalfshellvenus on February 21st, 2008 08:37 am (UTC)
Absolutely! Because having been there, he will fight with everything he has not to go there again. No matter who or what lies in his path...

Adore that last line.

Thank you! That is the lesson the Trickster finally taught Sam, whether he intended to or not.

Can't wait to see how Sam tries to use it.

*whibble*

He'll take everyone and everything down with him to keep from living that again.

I think that line scares me more than anything - because Sam could. I can't wait to see just what Sam is willing and able to do to save Dean. Dean's initial instinct when Sam died, was to sacrifice himself. How far would he have gone, and how far will Sam go? Compare and contrast... (sounds like an A-Level question I did years ago!)

Yes-- Dean's agony turned inward, and Sam's will turn outward just like his father's. Let it never come to that! *angsts*

This is wonderful and frightening because I think it tells the future. Especially the last line.

CHILLING!

The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Sam & Dean Genhalfshellvenus on February 21st, 2008 08:44 pm (UTC)
Is it wrong that I find myself both eager and afraid to see exactly where Sam's desperation will take him?

What if the "dark Sam" John so feared becomes real, and not from who the demon tried to make him directly but because of what Sam will do to save Dean instead? There's both irony and cruelty in that idea.

Yep, I think that's our new and improved Sammy all right.

Yep, I think that's our new and improved Sammy all right.

Forged not from evil, but in the fire of despair.

I don't think John OR the Trickster saw THAT coming.
