Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Rules Prop 8 Unconstitutional

It seems as if this should have been the obvious outcome, but the wrong ruling was always in danger of happening: U.S. Circuit Court Rules Ban On Gay Marriage Unconstitutional.

Excerpt from Judge Stephen Reinhardt in the majority opinion:

"Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples."

Full ruling available here.

I really hope they begin allowing same-sex marriage again really soon. It was still suspended after the appeal ruling, but this the last round of appeal within the state of California. That means that legal marriage within the state... needs to be legal again. Now.

Happy news today!

Back From Portland

Portland was great (gorgeous, even), the wedding was great, and I got to see lots of my family. All of my sibs were there except the sister who can't travel anymore, but her husband came. I also got to meet the groom's mother (wonderful), and many more of my sister's friends.

It was tiring, and the only time I had alone in three solid days was in the bathroom or while exercising, but well worth it.

I'd hoped to write my LJ Idol entry over the weekend, but the topic ("Current Events") proved too difficult while away from everything but occasional internet forays to the online version of our local newspaper. I didn't get much writing OR reading done, but there was a lot of visiting. :)

My sister's elliptical machine was at the other house, so my exercise consisted of using her spin-bike instead. I could not figure out how to raise the seat, so it wore me out faster than I expected. I made it through the first 3 episodes of Supernatural, S7, which I'd handily stored on my mini-laptop. My reactions ranged from "What, seriously?" to "Eh. Whatever..." much of the time. It's hard to accept that about a show I once loved so much.

Most everyone is doing well, though my Dad's driving has gotten a little scary. Apparently, his problems with his meds got worse for awhile (he was muddle-headed as well as dizzy), but my sister has gotten him off of one, updated another, and reduced the dose of a third. He had five different meds lowering his blood pressure (several as a side-effect), and now he has four that are doing a better job of it. So, he seemed really good apart from the driving.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. You're probably all looking forward to spring as much as I am!
