Going Stir Crazy

Rembember that post on Cabin Fever? It's still happening-- no end to the smoke due to wildfires. Though I was amused at yesterday's early "current weather conditions," which had Haze listed instead of Smoke. Haze from WHAT? Oh yeah... They actually had to cancel the Western States Endurance Run 100-mile race for the first time in 35 years because of the smoke. A co-worker's husband is mighty disappointed, as this would have been his first year to run it.

I'll be biking in the garage again (Grrrr), watching another boykissing movie. Happy Together was pretty good, though not what I expected. Very passionate but not explicit, a great exploration of a volatile relationship and what it means to be unhappy with someone and miserable without them. And to be too forgiving...

I finally gave Netflix some feedback on their movie suggestion algorithms. For instance, they lump Gay and Lesbian together, but in reality most viewers of that genre will be interested in only Gay OR Lesbian. However, the "Not Interested" feedback doesn't seem to be folding into more intelligent suggestions, and this case is fairly obvious!

In more subtle cases, I notice that "Not Interested" is not resulting in the big "Adam Sandler = NO" algorithm input that it should. HalfshellHusband had a great idea, which was for them to add "Favorite Actors" and "Actors To Avoid" for customers. That would allow me to avoid, say, Sandler, Jim Carrey (except in dramas) and Meg Ryan, and my husband to locate every Gene Hackman movie ever made (knowing that the quality is mixed, but still... he loves The Hack Man).

I don't know what to do about the "guilty pleasure" choices, such as our weakness for Jackie Chan in his U.S. movies that are less martial arts and more comedy and incredible fight-scene choreography. This is where it gets tricky-- I don't actually like martial arts movies, but I DO like some of the Jackie Chan ones. Well, neither software nor people are perfect, I guess. ;)

*Also needs a "Will Farrell = NO" button and HSH would like an "Emma Thompson = YES" button too*

It's lissa_bear's birthday, and I hope it's wonderful and that Julia has something fabulous planned for you! And that no wearing of fruit suits will occur during the coming year. \o/

Many happy returns on your special day. :D

And in other news... SIL and BIL are off to Russia today, and should be bringing home Sergey in about 3 1/2 weeks! *is excited*
