The Mope and The Tube
Still a tad grumpy about the fallout of the Prison Break Fanfic Awards. The state of the fandom (pre Monday's big blowup) has apparently migrated to the near point of

If a story falls in the fandom, and the author writes no Michal/Sara, does it make a sound?

*sigh*

So in and among the weekend flailing over deadlines and some moping about the awards, I made pants for a Pez dispenser (and that will never stop sounding wrong), looked at some sofas (if you know how much I hate brown/tan and chunky, you can probably guess how well that went), and did not get around to making fake suspenders for Christopher's pioneer field trip until last night.

Fake-suspender-sewing means that I got distracted and forgot to record Reaper while I was watching House. Aaaaaaugh! Anyone know where I can get a download?

Speaking of House, I'm really liking several of the proto-ducklings this season. I like Cameron 2.0 (!) though I've hated Cameron herself since last season (she went all smirky and way out of character). I lurve the older fake-doctor guy, and I kind of like Plastic-Surgeon Schmoe and Kumar. My husband's loving Cuddy's wardrobe. And I love the resurgence of ironic Wilson, whom I really missed last season. It's good to see him snark in a good-natured way again.

And then there's Desperate Housewives… I haven't been feeling the love I had for the show in Season 1. Season 2 was okay. Season 3 thus far, I hate the new neighbor (as we're intended to, but honestly I kind of always hate Dana Delaney), I'm starting to hate Felicity Huffman's character, and Susan's tendency to get on my nerves has reached epic proportions now. I loathe dynamics with infantile parents and overly adult children (*cough* Gilmore Girls *cough*), and I just can't take any more of her. I admit, I watched the second half of last season while writing fanfic. This season looks to be headed that same direction. :(

I know that L&O: Criminal Intent is doing cable first this year. But what happened to L&O: Classic? The cast dynamic really suffered last year-- the assistant D.A.s have been a parade of "meh" in my book other than Richard Brooks and Angie Harmon, and the cop side feels weak. Iz the show ded? Delayed? L&O: SVU has been my favorite for years and still is, and so far so good this year.

I've seen and loved two major new shows this season-- Reaper and Pushing Daisies. I so love the twisted and offbeat. I've missed "Chuck" already for various reasons, and I thought I had "Aliens In America" available to watch, but no. In fact, I learned a valuable thing about my DVD player last week, which is in fact a software bug. :0

You know the "protect" feature, that keeps programs from being recorded over on a DVD? Well, it turns out that on MY DVD player, that functions as a "Me first!" instead. Yes—everything EXCEPT the program you protected will be spared recording over.

"Aliens In America" successfully recorded last Monday, with 93% of the disc free. I protected it, and recorded "Reaper" the next night, and voila! My protected show was gone. :(

At least I know how this works now. And also, why I kept recording over episodes of Supernatural last season and what happened to the finale of Bones. Crap!

Minor weirdness on the home front: my son has taken to hunching over and covering his knees with his shirt, and calling himself the Human Ball. In the car a few weeks ago, his father said something that prompted this response:
Christopher: The Human Ball is offended.

Me: Once you start calling yourself The Human Ball, you pretty much lose any right to be offended over anything.

I lurve the older fake-doctor guy,

Me too!

And word on the new neighbour chick. I heard she originally was the producer's first choice for Bree and I don't get it. She just seems completely unlikable and just not appealing/entertaining to watch.

I've rather been liking Susan/Mike married and I haven't liked them since season 1. But them being married so far has been a lot less annoying than I feared. So far it's normal Susan level of annoying.

I want to stab Edie for blackmailing Carlos. Arrrrrgh!!!

I like his manner, the way he's not cowed by House, and frankly that he's sharp, capable enough to be where he is, and he's got guts!

I pretty much hated S1 Bree for her OCD ultra-controlling more-perfect-than-you behavior, and doesn't that sound like the new neighbor? So really, Bree has grown on us. ;) Alhtough the bulk of Bree's bitchiness used to be confined to her husband, DeadRex, and the new neighbor isn't even subtle with her claws. Rrrrr!

I want to stab Edie for blackmailing Carlos. Arrrrrgh!!!
Apparently Carlos has the same thought. ;) I've always hated Edie, though, and she's as conniving and shallow as ever. :0

BTW, I tried to get into Chuck but it wasn't really my thing. It seems cute and quirky though, so if you like Pushing Daisies you might enjoy Chuck too.

Have only see those like 10 minute preview thing from Reaper, but haven't watched the show itself.

I'd intended to watch Chuck, but got distracted by the PB S3 premiere. Others seem to like it, and it looked cute.

The Reaper premiere was fun. Heck, Ray Wise as the Devil alone is worth that series. We haven't watched last week's yet, and I'm kicking myself over missing last night's! Must get downloaded copy!
The Good, The Bad and The Lana: kickass priyankathelana on October 10th, 2007 11:58 pm (UTC)
Yeah the devil really was the only reason why I was tempted to watch Reaper. But I guess the production values sort of scared me off.

Like I said, Chuck was nice and all, but it sort of lacked the "hook" to grip me. Which is probably good anyway, it's not like I need yet another tv show.

Pushing Daisies is my pick from the new crop so far, though I'm kinda of worried sometimes that it might get too quirky to be watchable. Episode 2 had a few moments where I thought I would have to turn it off because it was just getting too much. But they bought it back in the end so I'm still cool with it.

! There's no Episode 2 in this timezone yet-- not for about 3 more hours! I wondered why you were already talking about it today. :)

Have fun watching it.

:D Sometimes I seriously wonder where these ideas of his come from. I mean, he's CrackFic all by himself half the time!
Gretagretazreta on October 10th, 2007 10:14 pm (UTC)
I vote Christopher for President. That's hilarious. And random. I love it.

And I didn't realise the extent to which Sara/Michael was so entrenched in the PB fandom. I mean, I should have, I spose. I always tend towards the slash, not exclusively, but I just didn't GET their relationship at all. I thought it undermined what I saw as the main objectives and motivating factors of the characters. For Michael, his obsession with justic for Lincoln, to save him at ANY cost. For Sarah, her sense of right and wrong, and her whole recovery arc. I couldn't take them seriously together, and worse, it made me take them BOTH less seriously individually as a result. It makes the BIG PLOT DEVELOPMENTS so incomprehensible, though, doesn't it? SO MANY FANGIRLS WILL BE DISTRAUGHT. Not me though, I'm horrified but glad.

Also my theory is that in some categories the Venusvote was split over too many good stories. *waves banner* You were screwed by a. stupid modding of the awards and b. your own popularity. Which is a good thing, right?

finally...I think you should write a "Young Michael plans and builds a birthday cake for Lincoln's birthday* fic. :D

And random. I love it.
I sometimes think random is his middle name-- I could write bi-weekly entries on his weirdnesses alone, past and present. My daughter is sweet and funny, but entirely more normal in the humor department. Her tender-heartedness is what's epic.

but I just didn't GET their relationship at all. I thought it undermined what I saw as the main objectives and motivating factors of the characters.
Oh, me too. I had the problem of Michael/Lincoln being my OTP, to start with, but really-- I even wrote a story about why Michael would NOT be getting together with Sara, as pretty and kind as she was, simply because she was a distraction in a larger picture. Which honestly fit better with his character, really. :0

And thelana said it best: when they're together, they bring out the worst aspects of both characters, which makes for a disaster if anything ever could. I'm glad she's gone, but I would have liked that to have happened in S1-- in a tragic, fitting, and wholly ungruesome way. This particular departure is so manipulative.

Also my theory is that in some categories the Venusvote was split over too many good stories. *waves banner*
Ha! You're so sweet. "Venusvote" indeed. :D Actually, I did worry about the fact of having so many stories competing with each other in some of the slash categories, but again, the winning story was really good, so who knows? I do regret the cats you can only be nominated for once-- seems like if you're still writing good Gen or whatever, then why not continue to be a contender? But that's the decision of the mods.

finally...I think you should write a "Young Michael plans and builds a birthday cake for Lincoln's birthday* fic. :D
Hmmmmm. This is actually a very sweet idea, and although I wrote the "birthday" prompt for the Slash pairing, I don't think I wrote it for the Gen pairing. Wonder if I included it in the prisonbreak100 prompt table?

They could always make a get well cake for your mom (though haven't you written a make breakfast fic? Or was that mooyoo?).
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Venushalfshellvenus on October 11th, 2007 12:02 am (UTC)
That was mooyoo-- about blueberry pancakes. I did write a random foodfic called "Recipe For Disaster" that feature kid!Michael and kid!Lincoln. ;)
The Good, The Bad and The Lanathelana on October 11th, 2007 12:07 am (UTC)
Hmmm, maybe Veronica could have hidden baking talents.

Or it could be the POV of their mom about what kind of cakes she baked them. Personalized cakes for Michael and Lincoln would be fun (unless you think it's too close to home).

Maybe one part their mom baking them cakes and then influenced by her Michael trying to bake one as a grown up. Either for a particular occasion or a sad story where Lincoln doesn't show up when he is supposed to.

*snorts*

An innocent, potential kid!Fic turns into angst like that in thelana's hands! :D

I have so many of those prompts to knock off, so who can say? At least I'm writing PB again-- god, S2 nearly finished me off for good after about last November. :0

I am The Angstmaster!!!!

If you ever want to talk prompts... you know I'm always up for that. (though I can't promise that I haven't lost my touch)

I still think somebody needs to do "what went through Lincoln's head during ep3x04", particularly that breakdown scene (you know, sometimes I swear they do certain scenes just so they can be iconed. I hated that sinking down next to the wall scene and thought it was sooooo cheesy when it aired. But it actually looks neat in icons).

I see you have a piemaker icon already! I actually love that the narrator consistently refers to him as "The Piemaker." I have trouble remembering the character's actual name. :0

I do love that show, though. And have to muzzle my husband every week to stop him from doom-mongering its future. Shush! Let me enjoy it while it lasts! :)
