Supernatural Gen Drabble: Simple Things
Title: Simple Things
Author: HalfshellVenus
Character: Dean (Gen, Weechesters)
Rating: PG
Summary: Drabble on "Envy" for 100_ghosts.

x-x-x-x-x

In Biloxi when Dean is seven, Sammy stays at Mrs. Jackson's house during the day and Dean goes there after school until Dad gets off work.

Sammy's usually in the playroom, and he comes out and drags Dean back to join his projects. They build Lego houses and Lincoln Log forts, and have Hot Wheels races and army battles.

Sammy grumbles when they have to leave the toys behind—they don't have many of their own.

But for Dean, leaving is always so much easier than watching Mrs. Jackson with her son and remembering when he had a mother too…

:D At the same time, I love that you can throw out a whole mood and not have to explain the backstory for what you set up or the larger fallout from the vignette. You can get such variety and range of microstories doing this. :)

When I think of the bleakness in contrast between the life Dean had and the life it so quickly became, it is just crushing.

John lost a great deal too, but he chose the more extreme fallout of that afterwards. Dean never had a say in that at all. :( *angsts*

Aww, Dean.

Oh, exactly! He has an entire lifetime of bad moments that could be summarized in that single phrase. Almost none of them of his choosing... :(

Oh, ouch is right. :( That kind of pain never really leaves, and Sam has no idea.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment! *secret office-chair dance* :)

I LOVE your icon, that's so precious.

Your is wonderfully personal!

Mine is perfect for the Winchesters, but also pings my heart because although my oldest is a little blond girl, that little boy looks just like my son from that angle. It really hits home!

Beautifully done. And it works well for their respective ages - if Sammy isn't school aged yet, he's not thinking about things the same way Dean is.

Thank you! I think Sammy, not having actually had a mother that he remembers, will always long more for the idea rather than have the acute ache Dean does of having something so essential just ripped away. *angsts*

Thank you very much! Bittersweet is SO much of the Weechester world-- even the good moments are usually tinged but what isn't all in the same space as what is. :(

At least Dean had an excuse to play! Thank gawd for that.

I know-- the silver linings are elusive sometimes, aren't they? Though at least Sammy doesn't know what's going on in Dean's mind.

Oh, Dean.

*hugs him*

Great job with the prompt. I like how you took something seemingly trivial -- playing at a sitter's house -- and gave it a deeper meaning.

Thank you so much! That seems very much like the Winchester life, unfortunately-- even as adults. The simplest and most normal situations so often have this underpinning of ache or regret. :(

And I'll bet they didn't come by those often enough, what with John's mission hanging over them all the time. *angsts some more*

*sigh* I sometimes think of what a difference a neighbor or family friend usually makes in that kind of situation, except that they didn't stay anywhere long enough for that to really work. :(
