Supernatural Gen Drabble: Practiced Cool
Title: Practiced Cool
Author: HalfshellVenus
Character: Dean (Gen)
Rating: PG
Summary: Drabble for supernatural100's "Fearless" challenge.

x-x-x-x-x

It started with training, with learning the motions, where everything got drowned out in the repetition of "How."

Practice on practice, until it was sequences and circuits, until the methods had beginnings and endings and all the techniques had names.

When the learning and lore were packed down tight, the movements automatic, he was ready to begin.

The first time Dean held a gun on something real, he had years of training to fall back on. He focused on what he saw, what to do next.

He made it look easy, but fear never dies.

Never does—not even now.

Thank you!

This is meant to show that it begins with lessening the fear through knowing what to do, but even with all the practice some element of fear remains. To a certain degree, it helps one survive, so that's not always bad.

And the fear has to be even larger now, for all those ways he might fail to protect Sam-- no matter what it is that's coming.

Thanks for reading!

i like this! i like the idea that underneath everything, dean's still afraid. especially now he's got the added bonus of worrying about - and fearing for - his brother.

I'm sure there's a lot that's practically routine, now, but on the other hand parts are more dangerous than ever-- especially where Sam's concerned. :(

Not I think mainly for himself, but what would happen to his family, which now only consists of Sam.
I think he's afraid of not being there for Sam, and also afraid of why might be coming for Sam. I can't blame him on either part. *wibbles*

Mwah-ha-ha! Yes I do!

And stop imagining Dean naked when you look at my icon. I know you're doing it. *whoo!*

Oh, I like this. It seems most people love to characterize Dean as this machine who just goes into autopilot when he hunts, but I love the depth you gave him. He may fall back on habit, but he still feels.

He may fall back on habit, but he still feels.
And oddly enough, that little bit of fear will help him to survive-- to not get careless.

And there's so much to still be careful of, for Sam and to make sure he's still around to protect Sam.

Thank you! This one was interesting, contrasting the background of how he got to the appearances of fearlessness how (so much preparation) where inside, he's not so casual.

This was such an interesting thing to write-- in part, it tells a little about how John trained and shaped Dean before ever letting him face any real danger.

And prepared as he is, as used to it as he's become, it's still never that simple...

Yeah, I think Dean has a healthy fear of things. I mean, he'll go out and kick ass and take names, but he's not foolish. Some things definitely scare him. (Not that he'd readily admit it, of course.)

Nicely done.

And they should, I think-- the Winchesters have their bag of tricks and their knowledge and training, but the things they fight are often physically stronger and once in awhile... not as anticipated.

Ooh, well done. I like this idea that no matter how well-trained he is, or how long he's done this, there's still that kernel of fear buried deep down.

:D This is basically the high-level summary of exactly what this story was supposed to say, and you got in just one sentence. :) That pleases me very much. ♥
