Prison Break Gen Fiction: Brute Force Mechanics
Title: Brute Force Mechanics
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Lincoln and Michael (Gen, Humor)
Rating: PG
Summary: Lessons in the fine art of brotherly irritation...
Author's Notes: Microscopic S2 spoiler (harmless). For the "all-dialogue" challenge at foxriver_fic. Also for my prisonbreak100 table, where I have the Gen pairing of Lincoln and Michael. This #72, "Fixed"

x-x-x-x-x

"Lincoln, would you just—"

"I don't think that's how it works, Michael."

"So you keep saying. Now do you mind? You're blocking the light."

"Okay, okay. I'll just be over here while you—"

"Fine. Do that."

"All right, already. Geez."

"Nmgh mruh huh…"

"What, Michael?"

"Nothing!"

"Okay."

"Who builds a piece of garbage like this anyway? Stupid sons of…"

"Hey, you know, why don't I—"

"No thank you. Now sit down, please."

"It's just a stove, Michael, for crying out loud!"

"Which is why it's not a problem, all right? For the last time."

"Okay, that's it— I'm done being polite. I'm starving and you've gotten fixated, the way you always do, and it never solves anything! So now I'm just going to say it: you're doing it wrong."

"Like you know…"

"I do know. So step aside, and let me take care of this."

"I don't need your help."

"That's right, Michael— you're way beyond help now. I'm doing it for you, or it'll be decades past dinner before you learn to make fire."

"Ha-ha. And I already checked that connection, by the way."

"Just making sure. So now I just—"

"That's not fixing, Lincoln! That's kicking! You didn't fix anything—that's cheating."

"And yet, when I turn the handle— voila! It actually works now, the way it completely didn't before..."

"You messed with it while I was on the deck, didn't you? Just so you could pull this whole thing right now."

"Of course not! Why would I do that?"

"To piss me off."

"Yes, Michael, because our lives have been so boring since we broke out of prison. It all makes sense now."

"The point is, you didn't really fix it."

"So you won't mind eating yours raw then, just on the principle of the thing."

"I didn't say that…"

"Better keep quiet then, before I start hearing it."

"Lincoln…"

"It's a deal—you're having sushi."

Heh.

That was excellent. Not sure what it says about *him*, but it was all too easy to picture Michael kicking a stove, lol!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Gen PB brothershalfshellvenus on May 2nd, 2007 04:51 pm (UTC)
That's actually Lincoln kicking the stove (I added a few more names, because you weren't the only one who got lost there).

Michael's solution is "Take logic==>fix problem" even when it doesn't always work.

Lincoln's is "Try the obvious==>smack it around if all else fails."

And Lincoln SO loves to be sarcastic (as we've seen on the show-- I love it when he gets funny lines, they're so "dry" a lot of the time). Every now and then, it's got to be irresistible to turn Michael's own logic back on himself (because that is even more annoying, and for anyone who's ever had a sibling, well... sometimes that's irresistible).

Glad you liked it overall, though, and I hope it's clearer now that I've tweaked a little bit. ;)

So in character and easy to picture, indeed.

Yes, because our lives have been so boring since we broke out of prison. It all makes sense now."

"The point is, you didn't really fix it."

"So you won't mind eating yours raw then, just on the principle of the thing."

Haha! That would definitely be Michael's style.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Gen PB brothershalfshellvenus on May 2nd, 2007 04:54 pm (UTC)
It would be, but it's actually Lincoln saying it. :0 Which is even more evil, because there's nothing like being slapped around with your own style of logic. That's doubly irritating (and you know the boys aren't above that at all: "Oh, wait, I know the answer-- Linc Smash!" "Shut up, Michael, that's not funny." "Smash smash smash!" "I said, shut up!")

I tweaked the dialogue a little to add some names, just to see if that cuts the confusion. The "who's talking" is always the challenge in the all-dialogue stories!

You're my second today, haha :DD
:D You're ahead of the game already!

Enjoyed reading it, and that's the most important, I guess :)
It is, and I'm glad. :D

I didn't get all the words (English is my third language), but I got the jokes and the story, so it doesn't matter, I guess ^^.. Well done!
If English is your third language (*boggles*), it doesn't show at all in your writing. :)

Thanks for reading and commenting!

I'd pay good money to see a scene something like this on screen.

Michael kicking a stove may be lil much for the screen BUT seeing them have a few more brothers ( very different brothers to boot ) moments would be heaven!!

Lovely fic :O)
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: PB Final Hughalfshellvenus on May 2nd, 2007 05:42 pm (UTC)
Ack! Why does everyone think it's Michael kicking the stove? That's Lincoln! And that's totally Lincoln's way of doing things.

Although... Michael DID run over Agent Kim in a car. But maybe that doesn't count, because everyone wants to do that. ;)

Loved it! I think this was just so perfectly them!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: PB Final Hughalfshellvenus on May 3rd, 2007 12:39 am (UTC)
Hee! The bickering never stops, except when they're both too pissed off to talk, I'm sure.

You must be back now!
froggyniektete on May 2nd, 2007 09:10 pm (UTC)
^^ They're just so cute. MiLi fluff is the best!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: PB Final Hughalfshellvenus on May 3rd, 2007 12:40 am (UTC)
:D I get a kick out of writing the fluff (a nice change from the angst), whether they're kids, or they're all grown up and still acting like a pair of kids as they do here.

This is one step away from "I know you are, but what am I?", I swear. :D

You're blocking the light
He's good at that.

it'll be decades past dinner before you learn to make fire
*cracks up*

That's not fixing, Lincoln! That's kicking!
ROTFLMAO!

I love these Michael-attempts-home-repair fics. He is so obviously unsuited to doing things like fixing the stove.

He's good at that.
He's biiigggg. And sometimes he lumbers into a place and doesn't want to move again.

ROTFLMAO!
:D Sometimes, fixing is only about the end result, not how you get there. *bam! Bam-bam-bam! Linc Smash! Bam!*

Ahem. Sometimes Lincoln's method totally works for me. :0

I love these Michael-attempts-home-repair fics. He is so obviously unsuited to doing things like fixing the stove.
I think that, as a logical person, he is ill-prepared to deal with crap workmanship. Whereas Lincoln does not get hung up on those particular details... ;)

This was great! The characterisation of Lincoln's tried-and-true method of kicking in order to make it work was so perfect, as was Michael's intent on fixing it methodologically.

"You messed with it while I was on the deck, didn't you? Just so you could pull this whole thing right now."

"Of course not! Why would I do that?"

"To piss me off."

Hee. These boys are all kinds of awesome together. ;)

Lincoln's tried-and-true method of kicking in order to make it work was so perfect,
:D What's even funnier is that kicking often works. Ha! And Michael's method is the correct place to start, but...

Hee. These boys are all kinds of awesome together. ;)
They are so much more fun for comedy than the show uses them for. Angst too, for that matter. They're underutilized in canon! :)

Hee - cracked up reading this. I LOVED the last line.

Fun stuff - I love brothers fic and this is great...

Haha! So glad you liked it!

I have such fun writing snarky dialogue in this and my other fandom (Supernatural-- more brothers on the run). Nobody knows how to push your buttons like a sibling. "Nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah, so there!" :D
alienmom: S2 brothers promoalienmom on May 6th, 2007 11:03 am (UTC)
i love your fics!

i love conversation fics!

i love michael & lincoln acting like, well, brothers! LOL

p.s. i wasn't confused as to who was kicking what! ;D
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: PB Final Hughalfshellvenus on May 6th, 2007 05:42 pm (UTC)
Thank you, alienmom!

I do love the challenge of the all-dialogue story, and this is my first for Prison Break (I have 3 or so for Supernatural). Snark wins!

I heard via rumors that you had a recent birthday, too, so belated congratulations! I hope it was a good one. :)

Mwahahahaha! This is great! I love the image of Lincoln's base pragmatism trumping Michael's anal logic. I feel like that's a key element of their relationship, Gen or Not Gen. I kind of always had the feeling that Linc was the only one who could ever beat Michael at anything, albeit in his own Lincolnish way. :)

I don't know how I missed this. Oh, you posted it while I was out of town. Stupid me for not reading the backlog of my f-page. Grrr me. >:(

:D Me too. Actually, this was something I wanted to see more of in S2-- more of Lincoln's street smarts coming into play in situations that didn't have the luxury of long-term planning. Instead, we got... dreck. :(

Poor Michael-- how can you not know that kicking things can be a completely legitimate repair method? :0
smilesoftnsweet: jared-hidesmileysmilesoftnsweet on February 23rd, 2008 10:12 pm (UTC)
LOL! Your characterizations are so spot on. XD

Poor Michael has to live with sushi now. He should know when to quit by now... oh, wait this is Michael, he never quits. ;)

Um, yes, Lincoln totally messed with it to piss his little brother off *shifty eyes*

loved it.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: heh-hehhalfshellvenus on February 26th, 2008 08:24 pm (UTC)
Funny, I thought I'd tagged all of my all-dialogue fics after that SPN Snowzilla thingy, and I forgot that I'd missed this one! *will fix it*

He should know when to quit by now... oh, wait this is Michael, he never quits. ;)
SOME people (like my son and my younger sister) are worse than Michael. They're in trouble or someone's mad at them, and somehow they feel compelled to backtalk and dig their hole deeper. I seriously have never understood that. :0

Um, yes, Lincoln totally messed with it to piss his little brother off *shifty eyes*
:D I love Lincoln's incredulity at that. Like he has nothing else on his mind at the moment, and yet Michael's sure it was some kind of subterfuge.

Glad you liked it!
